Two Questions about the Forum that I couldn't find in the help
1) If you mute a thread, is there any way to unmute it?
2) At what point do your posts and Threads move to the link that you can click on from your profile? They seem to be several weeks old. Is it a page count thing? or a timing thing?

Presidential amnesty
Our beloved universal genius, Master of the Universe and president of the Czech Republic, Tunnelgramps Václav Klaus recently ordered an amnesty for 1/3 of all prisoners to celebrate 20 years since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia he so masterfully orchestrated. Another 500 pardons are in the pipes as well, gotta help the pals out before his time in the office runs out.

The sciences
A recent post by dubmdell on the beauty of science struck me as being rather eloquent. It paused me to stop and think what the relative proportion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students were across our various countries. In the UK in 2010, for example, there were 12,000 psychology and 10,000 history graduates. Chemistry and physics had 2,400 and 2,200 respectively.

Republicans defend the rich
I am from Europe, so I don't know much about American politics. I always thought that the GOP is for the hard working people. But it seems more and more that they just defend the rich. Sounds stupid to me, is a rather sure way to loose votes.

Trigger Laws
These are laws which do nothing unless certain conditions are first met.

So some (US) states will automatically ban abortion if Roe V Wade is overturned; or automatically ban human cloning if it becomes possible to achieve; however i really like the following rule: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact

Pandin's Paradox!?!
Discuss. (when your convoy, if it would succeed, would cut support which would cause it to fail, but if it were to fail, the lack of cut support should result in a successful convoy...)

Eg: F eng Convoys Brest - Lon; Lon S wales - eng; north sea S bel - eng
ColonelKetchup (203 D)
03 Jan 13 UTC
are those orders from 3 separate players? it would help to know, for example, who is ordering F ENG c Bre -> Lon.
centurion1 (1478 D)
03 Jan 13 UTC
ok so in your example

fleet eng channel convoys brest to london.

london supports wales to english channel?

north sea supports belgium to england?

well the convoy doesnt go through because eng channel is taken by belgium and anyway theres a unit in london already and no support so bounced to begin with.

but i think i am confused about what you said
Oh, interesting. Do you have an answer for us?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Jan 13 UTC
With just the first part we would say that Wales-Eng would succeed thus preventing the convoyed army from cutting London's support of Wales-Eng.

But with NS S Bel-Eng, there is now a bounce, and therefore the convoyed army can make it to London and cut the support with the convoying fleet being a beleaguered unit. So that means that Wales-Eng only counts as one and therefore Belgium does make it into EC and therefore the convoy doesn't happen and the support isn't cut and therefore.....

Hrmm. What does the DATC say?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Jan 13 UTC
Ah, these are tests 6.F.16 and 6.F.17 with some other paradoxes that follow them. webdip appears to say that the support cut can only happen if there is a bounce so by the time the army gets there to cut support, the bounce has already happened so it is too late to cut support so doesn't.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Think about it... In the real world, the naval attack would happen Mich sooner than the unit could be picked up and delivered to battle, so it really does make sense.
KnightGeneral (1342 D)

Orathaic needs something along the lines of an army in Yorkshire supporting the convoy in order for it to really be the paradox, but I remember reading somewhere that while every outcome violates some rule, having everything just bounce violates the fewest number of rules, so I vote that.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Jan 13 UTC
@KnightGeneral, that is 6.F.17, Pandin's Extended Paradox.

You can read about both here:
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/L.B.Kruijswijk/#6.F.16

@Draugnar, not just that, but for the army to get to London, London's support has to have already succeeded, so by the time the army gets there, it is too late.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
03 Jan 13 UTC
My preference for resolving this kind of paradox is to imagine the fleet in english channel is attacking london (rather than the army in brest)

In this case the convoy succeeds but the support isn't cut because you can't cut support which is support a move into the territory you are in.

And while this is a perfectly good way to resolve this paradox, i believe it leads to several other paradoxes if you apply it consistantly.

(aside, england controls wales and london, germany controls north sea and bel, and france controls EC and brest)
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

According to DATC, the support of London is not cut, and therefore everything bounces.

All modern adjudicators, including this site, follow the Szykman rule. The best formulation of that rule is that the convoying fleet(s), part of the paradox, fail to participate in the convoy. Or in other words, treat the convoying fleet(s), part of the paradox, as hold orders. Adjudicate the other orders as normal.

The 'All Hold' rule, also puts other orders of the paradox on hold. But the Szykman rule has better compatibility with the official rules and there is less room for misinterpretation (putting too many orders on hold). Therefore, the Szykman rule has now broad acceptance.

Pandin is not new - he's old. The "Pandin" of Pandin's Paradox fame is a player named Tony Pandin, from the Cleveland area of the USA. He was apparently the first player to highlight this paradox. Tony Pandin (and the paradox) is mentioned in this article by our old friend Edi Birsan:

So now you know!

The Greatest (Love) Story Ever Told?
It's not "Romeo and Juliet"...surely we all agree?
It's not "La Boheme," however much I love that opera.
It's not "Les Miserables" (at least not the musical/film version, two lines and BAM! instant, undying love between Marius and Cosette...lol!)
So...what is it--triumphant, comedic or tragic, as we approach the romance of New Years', what IS The Greatest Love Story Ever Told?

Autumn 19XX Retreats
If a player earns their 18th center, the game ends. The game does not progress into the retreats phase; it simply ends. If someone can retreat into a center of the winning player, the game will still end. I understand that once you hit 18 centers the game is over, but my belief is that retreats are a part of the season in which they follow. If they are, shouldn't they go through, even if the player has gotten 18 centers?
