Roman Legions vs. Mongol Hordes
To commemorate the 807th anniversary of the grand Quriltai which saw Temujin elected as Genghis Khan, I ask who would win a battle between a force of Mongols and a slightly larger force of Roman legions (for the sake of discussion, we will say from the late republic/early empire period) in a head-to-head matchup? Please discuss.

How come every time I enter a discussion everyone battens down the hatches?
Ok, I may be Timur Han, but no real need to worry.

BTW It's Cengiz Han in Asia (pronounced 'Jengeez') as I'm sure you all know.

I'm pretty sure it is Chingiskhan in Russian and Chingis Khaan in Mongolian. Ch as in check, ng as in pong, kh as ch in Loch Ness and a as in large. The romanization of Ch and kh is debatable and s/z fluctuates but there is no e in Genghis ;)

Hungarian and Mongolian arent even of the same language family. Where do you get this from?
Willtor (113 D)

All else being equal, technology and training gives the Mongols the edge. That said, as with anything, all else is rarely equal, and technologically inferior and less-adequately equipped armies have often beaten their betters due to brilliant commanders. I would be more interested in the hypothetical -- who had the greater great generals? A match-up between Scipio Africanus and Subedei would make for an awesome movie. Both were innovative and quick-minded. But my sense of the matter is that Subedei was possibly the greatest general that ever lived. So I have to give the edge to the Mongols, again.

With both forces at their very best, I think the Mongols win. There is no shame in losing to Subedei, though. ;)

Hungarian, Finnish and Turkish belong to same language family. Thought there might be a connection as these are places the Mongol hordes 'visited'.
Putin33 (111 D)

Turkish is Turkic, the other two are Uralic. And the Mongols never reached Finland.
spyman (424 D(G))

Hungarian has many turkic loan words. Also a lot of the Golden Horde (probably the majority) were Turkic speakers. As the Mongols spread across Eurasia they incorporate their conquered peoples into their army. Thus when we speak of the Mongols conquering the Southern Song, for example, I suspect that the majority of the army at that stage was probably Chinese, even if most of the generals were Mongol. (somebody correct me if I am wrong)
Tolstoy (1962 D)

The majority of the Mongol army was Chinese... in China. In the western Khanates, they were still overwhelmingly Turkic (and, in the il-Khanate, Persian). It would've made no sense to recruit Chinese soldiers (who did not have a lifetime of experience with horse and bow) and march them across Asia to slow down fast-moving Mongol armies. Exceptions for specialists like siege engineers, scribes and bureaucrats, cannoneers, etc.

"Turkish is Turkic, the other two are Uralic"

It wasn't that long ago that "Ural-Altaic" was considered a single language family by just about everyone.

"It would've made no sense to recruit Chinese soldiers (who did not have a lifetime of experience with horse and bow) and march them across Asia to slow down fast-moving Mongol armies."

I think you got my meaning... but just to be clear. I don't think my posts suggests that they did.
Putin33 (111 D)

That theory has always had critics, and it is now universally discredited.

Which theory is that Putin?

The Ural-Altaic = one language family theory.

Is war between Russia and England more or less inevitable?
The Norway-StP corridor is very hard to DMZ. Perhaps conflict will always occur. I at least cannot think of a time in recent memory that they went the whole game without fighting (barring an early elimination of one or both).

Discouraging country based resigns thought...
Webdip uses a country weighting system where the more often you have been a country, the less a chance you have of being it again and vice versa. So how about use that to deal with people that abandon a game because they got a country they don't like?

Is it just because I'm in college or what?
Does anyone else have the experience that the time when gender issues and parity come most the fore is when a coed group of people goes partying together? Shit just happens and you have to make decisions based on that stuff more often than in normal life. At least I feel that way. Thoughts?

So has obiwanobiwan finally matured and can I take him off my mute list?
Obi need not answer. I won't see it. But does anyone else want to chime in with their opinion so I can decide if it is safe to take him off? I kind of miss his long winded posts, but he got so over the top with his youthful insistence he knew everything I had to mute him or kill him before his 21st birthday, and I thought the former was the better option.
