Apples and oranges
I've seen a number of discussions on the forums recently comparing two positions or ideas that are too different to reach a valid conclusion about which is better. Since invalid comparisons are in vogue right now, I thought we might discuss the classic: apples vs oranges. Go!
dubmdell (556 D)

Apples are clearly superior. You can't pour caramel over orange slices and stick that in a kids meal. Apple fries? Genius. I can't even tell they're not potatoes. Oranges are also juicier than apples, so they make a bigger mess, another downside to the namesake-color fruit. Apples have more variety too. Red, green, even a yellow or deep red coloration can be found. With enough genetic research, we could produce blue, orange, and purple apples, and the market "taste the rainbow" a day keeps the doctor away, instead of skittles "taste the rainbow" less to the dentist faster. Oranges just really don't have the popular appeal of apples either, and with good reason: they suck.

Apples.

Also my phone has an apple on it. Not an orange.

Apples are superior. I think everything is covered above me. Oranges are disgusting and Tropicana makes their fake juice out of 1% oranges and 99% disgusting shit anyway. Apples all the way.
yebellz (729 D(G))

Stop it with the Orange hate! Oranges are clearly superior!

+1 to show support!
Speaking of appeal, lol.

Orange peels don' et stuck between your teeth. Heck your not supposed to eat them anyway. It is much easier to peel an orange than an apple; you don't even need a knife. You can't soften an apple then cut a hole in the top to suck the juice out. Apple peals aren't used in potpourri the way that orange peels are. In Victorian England an orange was considered a very nice Christmas present for a youngster. The lad would eat the orange then give the peal to his Mum. She'd use it in a sachet to mask the stench while walking down the city streets. What is an apple? The Halloween treat nobody really wants? A cheap way to appease a domineering old bat of a teacher? Oranges are associated with sunny and friendly climes like California, Spain, and Florida. Where does the much vaunted apple reside? Washington state, cold, rainy, Washington State? There is just no comparison. Oranges are clearly the superior fruit.

CrazyA, oranges suck. They really do. When you go get a bag of oranges from the grocery store, the odds are that you got a crappy bag which isn't ripe and got painted orange. Sure, when you do FINALLY get that bag of awesome oranges, they're amazing, but let's face it: Oranges in general suck.
Apples, on the other hand, are like the Chuck Norris of fruit. Not only are they awesome, but you'd be hard pressed to pick up a bad bag of apples from the store. They just don't sell bad apples. Except, of course, the Red Delicious apples, which are spawn of the devil. Also, who peels apples?! All the flavor is in the peel! If you're making apple pie, then I can understand that, but no one who truly enjoys apples peels them. That's got to be some sort of sin.
The next thing to consider is that there are so many different types of apples. Sure there are tangerines, clementines, and other things like that, but those aren't actually oranges. There's only one type of orange, and it mostly sucks. However, apples come in different varieties to please the tastes of many people. Cortland apples, my personal favorite, are more tart and crisp, and go well with cheese, while Pink Lady apples are sweeter and more firm, and are delicious by themselves. There are Jonathan, Michigan and McIntosh apples, which are amazing baking apples. Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Honnycrisp, Fuji, Gala, I could go on for hours. Each with its own unique flavor and texture.
There are also many, many different things that you can do with apples that you can't do with oranges. Apple crisp, pie, turnover, fries, fried apples, applesauce, etc. I mean, who ever heard of an orange pie? I'm sure someone has done it, but it comes nowhere close to apple pie.

There is just no comparison. Apples are clearly the superior fruit.
Oranges are special. Nothing rhymes with orange. What rhymes with apple? Dapple, grapple, snapple, crapple. Boring.

Apples are poisonous. Darken Rahl made them red to attract kids and kill them. If you eat enough seeds, it can be lethal (I saw it on a G.I. Joe episode so it must be true).

Oranges have superior holiday tradition. Creepy psychos lace apples with razor blades on Halloween (it is known). Oranges are a pleasant gift to find in the toe of your Christmas stocking.

That guy is a bad apple. He's rotten to the core. You don't hear anyone say that about oranges. Instead, oranges enhance your meal with zest.

Oranges uber apples.
Yeah, that's right "One bad apple spoils the bunch" apples are generally of such poor quality that merely having on go bad will affect the entire shipment.

Not to mention you won't find an orange gracing some hairy dude's undies ala "Fruit of the Loom" that's a position more suiting the station of a lower fruit like apples and grapes.
Also where does the apple reside in literature? It's tempting but poisonous, Snow White, Adam and Eve, etc.
Lets face it on a basic level,

Orange = summer vacation
Apple = School's back in session

... Apparently no one appriciates the culinary superiority of apples.
jwalters93 (288 D)

Which is what *I* took this debate to be about. The taste and culinary advantages of apples vs. oranges.
I took that to be only one part of the much wider debate surrounding apples and oranges. Fruit in popular culture, fruit in literature, colloquilaisms, holiday traditions. There is much more to the vast and rich fruit culture than merely how good it tastes in a pie. :-)
Taste and culinary advantages are just one part of the equation, but oranges rule there too. I mentioned zest, which chefs use to enhance food with citrus flavor. You rarely see recipes calling for the addition of apple peel.

Cocktails? Screwdriver is better than appletini. Liqueurs? I'll take grand marnier over calvados.

Soccer kids want orange slices at halftime, not apple slices. That's because oranges are sweeter and more refreshing.

To be or not to be orange - that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to eat apples ?

Hey guys, I think you're trying to compare apples and oranges here...
Apples are and forever will be superior to all other fruit, and anyone who doesn't recognize that is a total moron and should be put to death.

Also, I'm ranked as the best apple eater based on a large number of metrics, so you should all express a suitable amount of admiration and respect.

I think Octavious has submitted a strong argument for apples over oranges. I'm surprised out European colleagues haven't mentioned the phone company Orange. Oh, wait, that's because it sucks. ;)
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Apples are better to cook with.

Oranges are better raw, and better for you, and don't make your teeth hurt or require slicing. The one downside of oranges is the smell on your hands after peeling. Apples have several downsides.

Also if I can just comment on OP, I've always thought the idiom that comparing apples and oranges is an invalid comparison is total tripe. It's easy to compare them, and they are presently being legitimately compared. They're both fruit.

Usually the things that are best compared are different items in the same category.

Like, Superman or Batman?
Chocolate or vanilla?

Etc. So I never really understood what the person who originated the apples oranges saying was thinking.
Yeah, maybe a better idiom would be "It's like comparing Bob to nuclear fusion"

Superman and Batman are not in the same category.

Did someone mention cider? What about Calvados!!? One of many excellent uses for apples in Normandie.

Talk about gin being mother's ruin - calvados could ruin grandmothers, mothers AND daughters! A Trou Normande is calvados drunk between courses as a palate cleanser.

I'm also very fond of Tarte Normande - there are myriad subtle variations of this superb apple tart.

It's rather fun this chat about trivia - thanks dubm for starting it!

Pineapples are a treacherous fruit that inflict pain if you eat too much of one. I tend to go off fruit that makes my tongue feel like it's been dipped in battery acid.

Sharon fruit is the king of fruits though :)

Draugnar (0 DX)

Apple juice is the additive to mane a juice "cocktail". It tastes great as is, but blends so well with other fruits that it is the perfect juice. Combine that with the fact you can eat the peel and you can ferment it's juice to hard cider and it's apples for the win! Only grapes are better in the fruit family as the seedless variety can have the entire fruit eaten and it, to, can have it's juice fermented, plus yoou can turn them into raisins and put them in your apple pie.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
15 Jun 12 UTC
Yo, if we're just talking about tasty fruit, a good, natural strawberry is hard to beat.

Also some dates from Morocco. Damn.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Jun 12 UTC
@Thucy - Strawberries and grapes for the win. If you can pick it off the plant and pop it in your mouth, it's a winner. Cherries are close, but you still have that pesky pit to spit out. Seedless grapes and strawberries are just the perfect summer fruit.

For debate: When is a gunboat not really a gunboat?
Hey gang: I accidentally clicked onto a gunboat game and now have no real way of backing out. Others are not really being acquiescent about a Cancel, so it looks like I'm (more or less) stuck. So instead, I'm setting up this thread as a potential discussion spot for gameID=91706. If players are talking here, is it still gunboat?
