dragon con atlanta - any interest in a diplomacy game?
dragoncon.org for info on dates and location, etc.

they are not currently hosting a dip game, but having emailed the gaming director, it seems like getting one or two games going should be pretty easy. before i go any further, i wanted to see if there were any webdip members who might be interested in a face to face game at dragon con!

Public Press World Game!
So, I really enjoy the World variant. I've played a couple full press and gunboat games, but have never tried a public press game. I personally think that such a game would be rather fun, with tons of potential for negotiation on a global forum.

Henotheism
Henotheism is the belief and worship of a single god while accepting the existence or possible existence of other deities. The term was originally coined by Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775–1854) to depict early stages of monotheism, however Max Müller (1823–1900), a German philologist and orientalist, brought the term into common usage.

It's an interesting idea. Similarly, what do you call the refusal to worship god, even if there is one?
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Apr 12 UTC
Antitheism? Satanism is a form of it. If you've ever read Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible you know that God exists in his view but that he feels God is not worthy of worship and that man should live by the flesh. Essentially Hedonism with some rules attached regarding respectign people in their homes and expecting and receiving respect in your own.
Invictus (240 D)

I haven't read the Satanic Bible, but I have seen one of those terrible History Channel hour long things on it and just skimmed the Wikipedia article to make sure I was right. In reality, LaVeyan Satanism is completely godless and denies the supernatural. They're basically Randians in funny costumes.

This is an interesting idea though, this henotheism. Where do you draw the line between it an monotheism when it comes to angels, for example? Even Islam could be henotheistic then.
Early Judaism was pretty obviously henotheistic. The Bible explicitly refers to a few foreign gods (and admonishes its readers not to worship them).
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 Apr 12 UTC
Antitheism is an umbrella for anyone opposed to religion for any reason, so it would include a person who knows God exists but refuses to worship, I would imagine.

That's kind of a cool idea lol that would make an interesting plot point in a fantasy story anyway.

Anyway this thread was meant to parody Sarg's posting style in "Marxism" but we can totally talk about henotheism that's cool too.

Also I'm not sure anyone would call angels deities within Christianity or Islam.

But when you read the Bible you realize most people were probably henotheistic. You hear "your god" a lot as though they do believe it exists but don't choose it as their own god. Odd, to say the least.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 Apr 12 UTC
I am also, by the way, a henotheist. This is because I know that I am a god, and acknowledge this, but all the same elect not to worship myself or seek worship from others.

I am allowed to say this joke without being called a blasphemer because it is my 21st birthday and I am drinking. So. You know. Deal with it.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@AWB - If you refer to the commandments, you need to read the original Hebrew. The word "god" does not refer to a supernatural deity, butt to anything the Jews placed more value upon or set above God.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 Apr 12 UTC
No I think he is referring to all the millions of times they say like "oh and you better not worship Baal or set up those asherah poles - baal is a dick"

also that story with elijah and the baal dudes.
and generally just all the times they mention other gods in the earlier books - if you read it as an acknowledgement of those gods' existence, not as "fake" gods as we think of them today then it is very interesting, and also henotheistic i guess.
What Thuc said. I actually considered Judaism to be damn-near polytheistic for a while, but the -ism we're talking about here puts a way finer point on it.
semck83 (229 D(B))

Yeah, I don't think it is, though, Thucy. It's true the people often were what you say, but the prophets were usually just saying "your gods" or "other gods" in the sense that, well, gods was the name for what the things were that the people thought they were worshiping. Always they are mocked for not being real and not being able to do anything (because they're not real).

It is true the people frequently worshipped other gods, though.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
20 Apr 12 UTC
The image I got was one more of an impotent god, not a non-existent god per se but one who is so ineffectual that he is essentially non-existent.

imho
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Apr 12 UTC
The word used in the Hebrew refers to a false god throughout. A false god being a name people worship, but who doesn't exist.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
20 Apr 12 UTC
Again, that's how YOU define "false god."

The fact that they used such a word means nothing if we don't know what this "false god" term REALLY means.

They could've meant false god in the sense of a god who is not the "true" god but who exists all the same, like a false pretender to the throne
dubmdell (556 D)

Draug, I don't think you know what you're talking about when it comes to the Hebrew. The term used in the ten commandments is "elohim," which is, interestingly enough, the same name used for the Tetragrammaton in Genesis 1:1, so "when the gods began creating the heavens and the earth..."
semck83 (229 D(B))
20 Apr 12 UTC
Well, Thucy, we could just say we can't know what they meant by the words, or we could look at what they said and see if we can figure out the context.

Psalm 96:4-5
"For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the LORD made the heavens. "

2 Samuel 7:22:
"Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God; for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears."

2 Kings 5:15:
" And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel; now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant."

Isaiah 43:10
"Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior."

Isaiah 44:6-8:
“This is what the LORD says—
Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last;
apart from me there is no God.
Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it.
Let him declare and lay out before me
what has happened since I established my ancient people,
and what is yet to come—
yes, let them foretell what will come.
Do not tremble, do not be afraid.
Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago?
You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me?
No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”

2 Kings 19:17-19
"It is true, LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, LORD, are God"

Isaiah 44:12-20
"The blacksmith takes a tool
and works with it in the coals;
he shapes an idol with hammers,
he forges it with the might of his arm.
He gets hungry and loses his strength;
he drinks no water and grows faint.
The carpenter measures with a line
and makes an outline with a marker;
he roughs it out with chisels
and marks it with compasses.
He shapes it in human form,
human form in all its glory,
that it may dwell in a shrine.
He cut down cedars,
or perhaps took a cypress or oak.
He let it grow among the trees of the forest,
or planted a pine, and the rain made it grow.
It is used as fuel for burning;
some of it he takes and warms himself,
he kindles a fire and bakes bread.
But he also fashions a god and worships it;
he makes an idol and bows down to it.
Half of the wood he burns in the fire;
over it he prepares his meal,
he roasts his meat and eats his fill.
He also warms himself and says,
“Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”
From the rest he makes a god, his idol;
he bows down to it and worships.
He prays to it and says,
“Save me! You are my god!”
They know nothing, they understand nothing;
their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see,
and their minds closed so they cannot understand.
No one stops to think,
no one has the knowledge or understanding to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel;
I even baked bread over its coals,
I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left?
Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him;
he cannot save himself, or say,
“Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”"

Isaiah 45:20 (Particularly telling example, in light of the preceding passage):
"Gather together and come;
assemble, you fugitives from the nations.
Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood,
who pray to gods that cannot save. "

So yeah.... Thucy fail.
