And the Bad News Just Keeps Marching In For Eden...
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/nflpa-warns-players-may-face-criminal-charges-bounty-155246283.html
Even if charges aren't brought against any players...wow, now they need lawyers? More and more, the Raiders are seriously in jeopardy of losing that "dirtiest team" mantle, fair or not, to the Saints...that SB win isn't looking as clean anymore (which is a shame, to be fair...)

Some thoughts on potential improvements

Speaking of the sad state of science
A former researcher at Amgen Inc has found that many basic studies on cancer -- a high proportion of them from university labs -- are unreliable. C. Glenn Begley identified 53 "landmark" publications -- papers in top journals, from reputable labs -- for his team to reproduce. 47 were frauds.

Question/debate
At what point does it become bad form to not draw or cancel because of NMRs/CDs? It seems like it is almost inevitable to have at least one cd in live games, but is it bad to profit because of that and push on for a solo despite all the other players voting for a draw/cancel?

WebDiplomacy and The Final Crusade? (Game Proposal/Invite)
I think it's safe to say one of our most discussed/popular/maddening discussion topics here on the threads has been religion--one vs. another, atheism vs. theism, discrepancies between definitions of those identities (see: SC and I having a near-Jewish Civil War) so...anyone up for a game? Represent your denomination/branch of agnosticism/branch of atheism, we'll chat...have some wine...last players standing "win" The Last Crusade...? ;)

Office Space...WebDip...
see below...
krellin (80 DX)
02 Apr 12 UTC
In the movie "Office Space" (hilarious) the main character confesses that he does basically nothing at work, whcih over the years I have foudn to be true for a *great* number of workers int eh world. (i.e. while unions take a lot of blame for the auto industry crisis, the White Collar ranks are **bloated** with uneffective, lazy employees screwing around on their computer...)

Obviously, here I am on WebDip...

What do YOU do to avoid work, but look/sound like you are frantically working away at work?

Ow krellin, you just made my day by bringing up Office Space. That movie is truly funny.

"Bob Slydell: You see, what we're actually trying to do here is, we're trying to get a feel for how people spend their day at work... so, if you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Bob Slydell: Great.
Peter Gibbons: Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.
Bob Porter: Da-uh? Space out?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. "

^the look on his face when he says "I look like I'm working" and he thinks that's a good thing. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
I watch Michael Bolton videos on youtube. If my boss catches me, then I get a raise for sharing his musical taste.

Crap, I just realized I forgot to put the new cover sheet on my TPS Report. Damn you, WebDip, for breaking my concentration!

Well, I'm working on this program to skim the fractions of a penny off each account's excess interest and transfer it to my own private account... But I also like to daydream about banging Jennifer Aniston.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And yes, Office Space is simply the *best* movie about life in a cubicle ever made. Hell it's the best *anything* about cubicle life ever created.

Draugnar (0 DX)

Nope. I don't think so. I have a meeting with the Bobs, so you're gonna have to do those TPS coversheets yourself, Redhouse.

OK, tonight was supposed to be catch-up night for last week's Person of Interest on the DVR, but now it is going to have to include pulling out my DVD of Office Space and watching it. I can tell right now I won't get any of my chores done or spend any time in the shop.

krellin (80 DX)

What's a DVD?
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Apr 12 UTC
@2WL - YEs, I own the DVD. Netflix's movie list on streaming is pretty weak (although the TV shows are solid) and I don't do the pirating thing as I wouldn't want my software pirated so I won't pirate someone else's creative efforts.

I haven't upgraded that one to BluRay yet (don't even know if it has been released as a BluRay disc), so DVD it is. I own a few DVDs and BluRays. Used to have a huge collection back inthe Media Play days, but sold them off to help make ends meet after 9/11 crapped out all the consulting jobs.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I used to have a consulting job where I was literally paid to do nothing. Two months into a year long contracting consultantship, the higher ups decided that they needed to have a full time employee (not a paid consultant) do all the stuff I was slotted to do, but they didn't want to hire me on full time. They were, however, obligated to pay me for the ten months, and tried to play chicken with me by saying that they would then require me to fulfill the obligations I had left, which were...show up every day.

Which I did.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Apr 12 UTC
@SD - Funny thing is my business cards say "Consultant" but I'm a salaried employee. It's just that I play consultant and mentor to new and existing customers of our product. My job is to integrate our products with our customers existing platforms and to mentor and train their developers on our tools so they can eventually become independent of us and just pay us our annual maintenance fees. That's the theory anyhow. :-)
SacredDigits (102 D)
02 Apr 12 UTC
Well, in my case, I wasn't working for the people I was contracting with directly, so that's why the kerfuffle.
krellin (80 DX)
02 Apr 12 UTC
Mine says Consultant as well, but I am a salaried employee. It's supposed to sound more professional, I guess....
SacredDigits (102 D)

The greatest part of that besides not actually having to work was requesting vacation time. I would get approved instantly, no matter what.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Apr 12 UTC
You shouldhave worked out a "work from home" deal. :-)
SacredDigits (102 D)
02 Apr 12 UTC
Yeah, they weren't hearing it, they wanted me to settle for a lump sum smaller amount.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Apr 12 UTC
I would have considered the smaller amount if it were like 75% or better of what they owed to finish out the project. then you could have taken a couple months off while you looked for a new client and enjoyed a touch of vacation.
I do my work. I enjoy learning and I also enjoy achieving.

Player kicked out?
Looks like a player in our game got kicked out and someone took their place. The game is here: http://webdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=84494 The player in question is India, who was eighnjel or something like that, and is now timgard. India didn't log in all weekend but Argentina has never logged in and has not been kicked out. Is there any way to reverse this? Why did it happen? How do we replace Argentina?

In Defense of mapleleaf, krellin, and All the Rest...
We've created them.
They have as much right to speak their mind and spew as much vitriol as I spew Shakespeare...the same way we've made me into the seeming embodiment of the long-winded pseudo-intellectual Ivory Tower elitist, we've created these trolls, too...you pay them heed, and you lend credence to their creed. Respond, mute them, ignore them...but they have their right to speak, too...

Mod-a-Day Program
After listening to your suggestions about self-moderation, we've decided to try something new. Basically, we will give a user with a reasonable record mod privileges for one day to help keep order in the forum. We hope this will prevent any one person from going crazy with power, as it will only be for 24 hours. If you're interested, please post here.

Azawad
Just curious if anyone here has any thought on the situation in northern Mali/Azawad. It seems extremely unlikely to me that 2,000 ECOWAS troops are going to be able to fight the Tuaregs unless the MNLA splits, and I haven't really heard anything indicating that that's going to happen. At the same time, all of this seems to be happening kind of quickly. Are they prepared to set up a government?

Have you ever made a horrible decision and not realized it until after you've done it?
Well I have. In fact, there are only two things in this life that I've done that were incredibly stupid. The first is not putting oil in my vehicle until the engine blew when I was a kid. The second was un-muting Krellin. Not sure why this guy hasn't been banned yet but, like the damage to my motor, ability to not hate idiots will never be fixed again.
