Dumb Question - How do you win?
According to the rules you will as soon as you have control of 18 bases. When do you have control? When you occupy 18 bases or at the end of a complete year?

Bringing Back The Leagues
Before anyone does any more talking, someone should do some doing.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
30 Mar 12 UTC
This (edited version) is a response to a comment made by Yonni in his "Tournament" thread, that was originally posted there but I wanted to repost it here to hopefully inspire someone to actually bring back the Leagues, rather than any more people simply say they're going to do it.

Post:

Yes, it seems quite trendy at the moment to post a thread saying that you're "going to bring back the Leagues!" as if it's the Quest for the Holy Grail. It's becoming quite amusing. Personally, rather than every second moderator and moderator-wannabe talking about how much they're going to bring back the Leagues, I'd rather they just privately organise themselves, set up the necessary framework and then come to the forums when they have a tangible plan and can just offer a simple sign up. Threads and questionnaires aren't going to bring back the Leagues and there is clearly never going to be a happy 100% consensus on what the Leagues should be. As such, someone should just take the initiative and stake a claim as to what the Leagues are going to be under their direction and go ahead and set it up.

There's too many going around saying they're "going" to do it but no one actually has. Why don't people do something BEFORE they talk about it - then they might at leave some credibility. My example would be Geofram: he actually comes to the forum to announce a set up that he has organised, webpages he has created, and people can either join or not join - it's quite simple. That is the organisation the Leagues need - not another thread where someone tells us proudly that they will bring it back.

Sorry about the delay. I'm working on putting together the ladder tournament. Currently writing up the rules and regulations, just so everyone knows what they are getting themselves into.

I was hoping to have these rules and signup posted earlier this week, but real-life got pretty hectic. I'll try to get it finalized soon.

My ladder tournament will like an alternative to leagues, the major differences being anonymity and a stronger emphasis on competition rather than fraternization.

I believe Draug, FK, and Yonni have discussed working together to bring back the leagues.

What about a Swiss-style tournament? Where players are paired based on their results?
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Yes, we are bringing them back. The issue is FK is not available to do anything for a couple weeks do to other commitments. Look for more in mid April on the casual, fun, non-anon, and very social Leagues.

Something upon the lines of Points = 420/no. of drawing players, so
Solo = 420, 2-way 210, 3-way 140, 4-way 105, 5-way 84, 6-way 70, 7-way 60.
Survives have no value.
Each player will have 2 scores, a "big" score which is the Points added together, and a "small" score which is the total of the Points of the opponents he played (if he played someone twice, it is counted twice). If the "big" score of two players are equal, then the "small" score is used to tiebreak.

Players will be matched in Classic Dip WTA anon games, of phase to be determined. After each round of games, the "big" and "small" scores are calculated, and the players are ranked by the scores. Then 1-7 play, 8-14 play, etc. and the process is repeated.

This should ensure that players play at their own level. This set-up does require at least perhaps 35? 49? players to work. If there are enough players, the additional rule will be added as follows:
No players will play each other for more than twice in a row.

Bye rules: If you are in the lowest tier, you may have to play Bye. You will be given an average of 60, and your Bye points will be increased in such a way that your Bye/number of opps will remain unchanged. (That's the same as a 7-way draw, because that's the average.)

Elimination: No, there will be no eliminations.

Winner: After a predetermined number of rounds (say 5) the match will end. Rankings will be generated from your results.

But for the sake of what we envisioned last (FK has some ideas he wants to present, yet, but this is where it's at)...

The leagues will be non-anon. That's guaranteed. Last years promotions and demotions will happen somehow, but there may be a few double promotions and a few non-demotions because we are going to flatten then and either go with 14 or 21 player grouping at each level. So instead of Premier, A, B, C, and D, we will have Premiere, A, and Open leagues where Premier is the former Premier and A and A is the former B & C and all newcomers will come in to the Open leagues.

We haven't locked in how many will be promoted or demoted between Premier, A, and Open yet.

And while we enjoy a little meta for position, it got out of hand with cross game metaing, so the larger groupings means you won't know who your opponents will be in the next game as we will use some kind of randomizer for each successive round. This will reduce cross game metagaming *and* allow you to get to know more people over the course of a season. You'll still be allowed to (and in some way snecouraged to) communicate with folks in other games in your group to try and twist their arms so they take out your rival in the point standings, but you may or may not see that rival in more than ine game (we'll make certain everyone plays everyone else at least once).

So, what do you all think? I'll put together a signup site this weekend out at Draugnar.com sowe can get everybody on it and hopefully start up by the end of April, if FK can handle the timeline.

@Gobble, what is your scoring system for? The ladders or the leagues or something else you are considering running?

This is an awesome thread.

Let's get the leagues moving instead of talking......
.... so I'm going to create a thread to get everyone talking instead of doing!

I have two big trips next wednesday and the wednesday after. This weekend, I'll setup signups, and won't start until I return from my second trip.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I've got some free webspace and can set it up on Draugnar.com if you want, fortknox. I'll collect email, webdip name, and UserID and if they were in the leagues last time (which level if they were). Anything else you want me to gather?
fortknox (2059 D)
30 Mar 12 UTC
I plan on starting over from scratch, since half the people don't want to do non-anon. I will setup the initial tiers by GR. I just need a collection of who all wants to join. I need to setup an email account for it, so let me do that and go from there.

"This is an awesome thread.

Well, rather than more talking - go off and do something then.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
30 Mar 12 UTC
And actually the purpose of the thread is not to inspire more talking but to simply say that it's better to do.

There is no medium I can suggest this without using the art of communication.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
30 Mar 12 UTC
@Draugnar: That would be for whatever competition decided to use a Swiss system.
Of course there are other ways to score a league, for example Elimination, Double Elimination, Single-robin, Double-robin, etc. It's just my view that Swiss allows players to play someone of their own strength while not having someone getting eliminated from playing any more.

Also, there's got to be some irony in Sarge starting this thread and suggesting that I shouldn't have started my tournament...

But, FK, we should stay in touch. If you think me continuin my efforts with a new tournament is going to hamper your ability to restart the leagues, I'll nip it in the bud before putting any more effort into it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 12 UTC
I'm kind of concerned about stripping away the rewards promised to and earned by the winners of the last season of the leagues. GR can fluctuate (I recently lost 80 some positions) and those who won their leagues did so because they played the over all game (not just each individual game) better than the others in their group. They earned their promotion.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
30 Mar 12 UTC
Yonni, I did not suggest that you shouldn't have started your tournament. Please don't follow fortknox and start attacking me. I praised your efforts in trying to do something - please don't forget that.

Yebellz, yes I should try that, I shall post the video of me dancing to youtube and simply let that do the talking :)
Yonni (136 D(S))

Remember the Scott Expedition, of which three members died 100 years ago today
"Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more. R. Scott.
