Dip. Dip never changes.
I logged on to this site for the first time in 2 years today and the forum is almost exactly as I left it... political/religious arguments with neither side willing to compromise, a resident troll who gets most of his attention from other users starting topics about him, and even a 'last user to post wins' thread (although I don't think it's the same one... at least, I hope not.)

It's good to be back!

London more free market than NYC!!!
Excellent article in the New York Times no doubt about how Margaret Thatcher's deregulation of Britain's financial markets is putting London far ahead of New York City/Wall Street.
This doesn't even count the Dodd-Frank insanity.

mainstream media teams up with gop?
as election fraud becomes rampant and government legitimacy is starting to be questioned, the federal reserve, in conjunction with major media outlets as well as the democratic and republican parties, have formed a coalition to deal with this emergency situation.

Encryption in Public Press
Anyone ever run into this?
If you've no idea what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QnD2c4Xovk

Would essentially destroy public press, but I can't see it breaking the rules...
Yonni (136 D(S))

Awesome. But, yeah, it's sort of 'against the spirit of the game'
Tolstoy (1962 D)

I think an encrypted anonymous public press game (where cracking an opponent's codes would give you a huuuge benefit) would be quite fun. There would have to be limitations on the complexity of the cryptographic method to keep the codes breakable, though, or the game would have no point. Perhaps a neutral "codemaster" would hold the cryptographic algorithms in use to make sure they don't break the pre-agreed rules, and transmit the codes between the players.

Any interest?

what nonsense is this? just have a codeword, like one person says "gdday mate" to everyone, other guy says "how's it going" to everybody. something like that. i don't understand why you need some complicated encryption scheme.
bolshoi (0 DX)
02 Mar 12 UTC
then when you know who each other is, just treat them a little nicer in the game. that's basically undetectable. which is part of the reason why these ratings are stupid, they can't truly prevent cheating.
bolshoi (0 DX)
02 Mar 12 UTC
but if you're a real professional you don't even cheat using the in-game chat, you send emails or call the guys while the game is going on telling them who you are and discussing how you are all so smart and are going to win the game easily, and how it's such a fun game since there isn't pesky thinking required or challenge.

bolshoi, they're not talking meta-gaming by abusing the fact that you can easily figure out who's who in a Public Press.

On-topic: I'd say this is fully within the rules of the game. However it relies on the other people knowing what you're doing. It also completely breaks the spirit of the game since the discrete logarithm problem has been proven hard for some sets of groups.

I agree that this somewhat betrays the (original) spirit of public press games, but it surely would be an interesting thing to try, adding a whole new level to the game. Has this been done (or attempted) in public press games before?

If one was to play this kind of game, I'd say only symmetric cyphers which can be cracked with some effort should be allowed.
Geofram (130 D(B))

Troll, you're retarded.
We're talking about public press and sending encrypted messages that despite everyone else being able to see, would never be able to translate and read.
@Tolstoy -- RSA would be easiest and impossible to crack. Either you'd choose a method that can't be cracked or you wouldn't do it (because all the others are easy to crack). Would make a game themed for code-breaking difficult.
bolshoi (0 DX)
02 Mar 12 UTC
ok i just watched the first 3 seconds of the clip and heard something about an encryption scheme, so maybe qoou you can enlighten me as to what they are talking about. tolstoy was talking about some code-breaking game. but i don't think op was.
Geofram (130 D(B))
02 Mar 12 UTC
I could write a simple RSA applet that allowed anyone to encrypt their messages with our shared key (and their private) and copy-paste the coded message into public chat. Even something like 100-digit primes wouldn't be too hard (and would not be cracked in time for the phase at least if ever during the game)

bolshoi:

You go into a public press game. You say, "Hey France, let's use Z/1033Z as our group and 3 as our generator". France says "Ok. I've picked some random number. Raising 3 to that number gives me 21". You say "Ok, I've picked one too. Raising 3 to my number gives 73".

You two can now encrypt your messages and communicate privately, despite the fact that all of the above was public. It's a nifty little mathematical feature.

I feel I need to say this to every post bolshoi comments on.

Do not, repeat do NOT respond directly to anything he says. Ever.

Instead say, "fuck off, halfwit," and move on.

i think 21/73 are kind of small numbers for it to be hard to break, but in theory maybe. but what's the point? why not just play a game with full press? because codes make you feel like james bond?

Muted? Game Chat?
as some may be aware, approximately 25% of the webdiplomacy has muted me as of today. so my question is do those mutes include in-game messages?

more specifically, lets say i join an anonymous game with messaging with some of the muters. will they not hear any of my messages... and not know why i'm not messaging them?

question of skill
if there is a game where the only two countries to cd are england and italy, and the game eventually leads to a four way draw, where france is just about to be eliminated at the end. does that indicate gross incompetence on france's part? this question is of vital importance to my self worth.
