Conservative versus right wing (short version): "right wing" refers to a set of positions on individual issues. "Conservative" describes how one arrives at those positions... or at least it used to.

"Right Wing" is actually what most people think of when they hear the word "conservative." If you agree with Rick Perry that we need to re-invade Iraq, if you oppose same-sex marriage and want lower taxes and less non-military and non-law enforcement government spending, you're right wing. It's just the aggregate of your policy positions.

But if you're okay with bread, circuses, and opium in order to make revolution less attractive, you're a conservative.

If you're in favor of bread, circuses, and opium because you like bread, circuses, and opium and you figure everyone else does too, you're a liberal.

And it seems to me that left/right is the big stratifier right now. Conservative and liberal moderates seem to be figuring out that they have more in common with each other than with the radicals on either end of their respective parties.
