Where can I find legitimate information about Iranian public opinion on various issues?
I'm writing a post Friday morning for my blog about how the US ought to deal with Iran, and I want to approach the issue from understanding how Iranians feel about their nuclear program, the United States, the rest of the Arab world, etc. And I need useful, unbiased information. Where would I get that?

NFL Pick: 'em: Wild Card Weekend--Get It Right Or Go Home! ;)
12 teams, 1 mission...

And so the playoffs begin, and in the spirit of the playoff feel, a bit of a twist to the Pick 'em formula--you must AT LEAST break even (get 2/4 games right, or more) to stay in...3 strikes, you're out! Let's see how many make it all the way to the Super Bowl. So--4 games, 8 teams, 1 gluteus to its maximus...Pick 'em!

No, I don't think that perpetually bumping a thread is a very good solution either.

However, it might be a helpful temporary fix until a more permanent solution is agreed upon and implemented.

Ultimately it's Kestas' decision in terms of making any sort of changes of this nature. Hopefully, we can come up with some sort of proposal that is helpful while also respecting his desires to keep the design simple, clean and friendly.

I think that such a proposal should perhaps be limited to the following:
1) In the message displayed when posting a new thread: a slight rewording ...
1a) ... to state that cheating accusations should not be made in the forum and to see the rules for instructions on when and how to contact the moderators.
1b) ... (perhaps) to also include a link to the help page (however this might not be necessary as the help page is already linked prominently in the top navigation bar).
2) On the registration page: perhaps linking to the rules and asking the user to confirm that they have read them.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
03 Jan 12 UTC
I like 1a and 1b. I don't know if many people will actually use the link to read the rules. They are just likely to click yes and move on.

To be candid, I haven't even noticed that there are those gray messages when you start a thread...

The moderators of this site shouldn't never enter into private business.

The solution to the problem is to add a link labeled "Contact a moderator" after the help link at the top of every single page.

Of course that will reveal the truth that the moderators don't want to make it that easy to contact them.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"The moderators of this site shouldn't never enter into private business."

What does this mean?

I would like to see a "Site Rules" Tab next to the "Help" Tab. Adding a contact button seems excessive. Plus, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that users read the site rules before contacting us.
kestasjk (99 DMod(P))

I quite like the idea of adding a link on the "New thread" button, especially since it already has other links there.

RE: @Tettleton's Chew

> "The moderators of this site shouldn't never enter into private business."

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here.
Even attempting to interpret the double negative either way doesn't quite clarify what you mean, since it's unclear what you mean by "enter into private business".

> "The solution to the problem is to add a link labeled "Contact a moderator" after the help link at the top of every single page."

Well, that would be one approach, but perhaps that would take up too much space. Shortening the link to simply say "Contact" and having it point to a "mailto:[email protected]" link or a short page with the address and instructions on how to submit a cheating report may be helpful. Some have also suggested putting a "Rules" link in the top navigation bar as well.
Of course, the elements of the site of this nature are completely at Kestas' discretion, and I believe that his intent is to keep the design simple, clean and friendly.
If we, the general community that uses the site, feel that the something could be presented or organized in a better manner, then I feel that the appropriate course of action is to respectfully submit that concern in a well though-out proposal.

> "Of course that will reveal the truth that the moderators don't want to make it that easy to contact them."

I think this last comment is quite silly and perhaps even a bit paranoid (in the "the man is out to get you" looking-for-a-conspiracy sense), given the nature of the recent discussion, which actually suggests the opposite.
In fact, the whole motivation surrounding this discussion is to make it easier and clearer for users to contact the moderators through the appropriate channels. If you look at the profile pages of the moderators, you will see that nearly all of us have provided the moderator email address and we all have it clearly marked that we are in fact moderators.
However, what we do want to avoid is information being directed to us through the incorrect channels:
1) Cheating accusations should be kept off the forum, since it's unfair for those accussed to be publicly flogged for potentially false accusations.
2) Members should contact us through the email account and not PMs, since PMs are much easier to overlook and are not logged in the shared email. Also, using the email account will certainly result in a faster response as it sends to all of us.

Why can't it be in the banner like when we were wished a merry xmas?
Well then Mr.yebellz, if you seem to want people know who is a mod and how to contact them, why did you have your checker boards removed? HAH, answer THAT!
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Honestly, I am fairly flexible here. Post it more prominently, or don't, there will be pros or cons whatever we do. And you can never ever get rid of people who plain and simply just do not read text.
Why not use this thread as a Q + A vehicle for all aspects of the game and site?

RE: @dD_ShockTrooper

It seems that your post was merely a sarcastic remark, however I will answer it anyways, as it may be helpful to clarify.

Actually, pretty much all of the mods support the idea of bringing back mod checkerboards. I'm not quite sure why Kestas removed them. Perhaps he felt that it seemed to overbearing, but that's just speculation.
yebellz (729 D(G))
04 Jan 12 UTC
As for all of these issues (checkerboards, links to rules, posted notices, etc.), Thucy is pretty much right. There are pros and cons with all of the options in any of these decisions, and it is extremely difficult to make everyone happy or suit everyone's needs.

Yebellz, A business sales a good or service above its costs to make money.

I would advise you to leave the making of a profit to others, and remain satisfied working for a salary or wages.

I knew you wouldn't want to make it easy to contact a responsible party.
Leave it buried in the rules and keep dealing with countless forum posts.
It's exactly the way non-business owners think.

are you serious?
this site is not a business and kestas and the mods are doing a great thing keeping it online so you can play and troll here
but instead of being thankfull you are arrogant, this is not the way a business owner acts when someone provides you a free service.
the idea is that if you have something to sugest you can do it but who said you will always be rigth?
if i had a site that cant progress to be a money maker but it mantains it self and i can use it to link it to another site,i will keep it and not close it,but i will also be sure that it doesnt have to much trafic and will force me to increase the mantainance costs, every noob in this site has its cost,if kestas wanted he could bring here maybe thousands of noobs registering and leaving the site everyday, posting threads and e-mailing the mods
we enougth space in both sides of the page for pay per view adds to make it proffitable so it will be a shity site full of multis and metas and 10 year old future nerds, but all the real players will leave and at the end the trafic will go down and not be profitable.

TC I am selling my mod position, PM to negotiate price.

Is that enough like a business for you?
fortknox (2059 D)
04 Jan 12 UTC
First, everyone stop taking TC's troll bait, though his troll brings up a point I'd like to talk about.

Why is it so hard to find the mod email and why don't we like people just responding with it instead of the rules?

The answer is simple. We get tons of emails everyday. Some of which is, if you generalize it, a waste of our time. People complaining about legit tactics, or things we do not deal with. Things that you'd understand if you read the rules.
So, to minimize this, we prefer to point you to the page that has the rules, hoping you'll scan if for your problems before you email us.

Yes, it is a little selfish of us, but, let's face it... the pay doesn't make it worth it ;)
taos (281 D)
04 Jan 12 UTC
thats the reason i think there must be some tutoring to noobs, many players will like to help with this and the noobs will apreciate it and stay at the site, tutors will answer to simple questions about rules and strategies and point them to the mods if needed.when i see the numbers: registered-40946 playing-1497 i understand that many ppl get to the site register but dont find themself in the comunity or understand the game well enougth to get adicted .
Thucydides (864 D(B))
04 Jan 12 UTC
you know how on shit like chacha they used to pay you like 5 cents for an answered question. we should do that.

just kidding. kind of.

anyway i honestly think there is one fairly easy thing that can be done that most all would agree with:

put "Rules" at the top alongside Settings and Help and Games and all that.

Having inside one of the tabs means a lot of people don't even know its there

That's why we have a forum. People are free to ask pretty much any question they want. If new players aren't going to take advantage of the forum, they aren't going to take advantage of some convoluted multi-step email process.

fortknox (2059 D)
06 Jan 12 UTC
The best way to deal with TC is ignore anything he posts. I feel bad for commenting on something he posted, but I thought it would be a legitimate question a normal user would ask. I'd suggest ignoring or muting him instead of responding to him, even to insult him. It just perpetuates the troll.

I honestly don't think he's a troll. The man is hateful and wrongheaded, and I'm starting to believe actually a bit crazy, but he actually believes the garbage he spews. No troll is that well versed in right-wing rhetoric. No troll mutes his naysayers (as TC is famous for doing), because that means he gets less attention.
