Top-100 GR "World Map" Challange Game
I have not played a GOOD world game in a long time. I wonder if it is possible to have 17 out of the top 100 GR players join such a game. It would be quite a feat. This can be anon or non-anon and it should be 36 or 48 hours. WTA only. Indicate your interest inside (please post only if your Oct GR rating is 1 to 100)

The culture of canceling games
I think games get cancelled too readily on this site. Iif someone NMRs in the first year then by all means it is easier to start again. But a few years into the game I think you should just play it out. So what if someone else gets lucky because of a fortunate NMR or CD. It's only a game. And it is such a big investment of time and effort to call it quits with no result.

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but occasionally the Moderators make mistakes. Over 500 games are being managed by 4 people. It's bound to happen. Personally, I think we have a pretty good track record.

However, when mistakes do happen, I would ask that people stay calm. It is not at all conducive to a solution to have multiple parties screaming at the mods regarding a problem we already know exists. We are always willing to listen to the community, and while blatant harassment is tolerated, it still isn't nice to do. : (

I truly am sorry that we can't always satisfy every member on the site, but we do our best. So, the next time something like this happens, please take a step back, put yourselves in our shoes, and at least try to approach us in a reasonable fashion. You are, after all diplomacy players.

And, once more, on behalf of the mods, I apologize for our mistakes.
"This may come as a surprise to some of you, but occasionally the Moderators make mistakes. "

Somehow not surprised, but i accept your apology. How about you Draugnar?

Hooray mods! Its a shame those that are unsatisfied and angry make so much more noise than those of us which are happy about the way things are run. Or at least when we aren't happy, we are civil. You all seem to be earning your paycheck in the last couple of weeks.... And by paycheck I mean $0 since you do this voluntarily.

Keep up the good work!

I for one am sorry for my role as it was.

I apologize for being confused as to Sarg's intent regarding leaving.

I apologize for asking the mods for a short-pause to sort that out.

I apologize for trying to protect the 'integrity' of a game rather than just letting an NMR happen as part of the flow of a game. I did not imagine folks would get worked up over such an issue, so I apologize for my lack of imagination as well.

good night folks.

... and thank you dear mods for apparently being in my back pocket and at my beck and call... speaking of which, I want my coffee at 6am pronto!!! =P

seriously though, thank you for your deliberative efforts and I'm sorry that I initiated such a fracas for you all to resolve!

My god what a debacle. As usual I am too busy/lazy to unravel the messy politics of pausing or whatever it was this time around but my God.

God, I hate the mods so much, they're such lazy dicks. Like, come on. Other people have paid small sums of money to keep this site alive, and the mods give them NOTHING EXTRA in return for their charitable donations. Then they only give a large portion of their free time to help us have a more enjoyable experience on this site that most of us don't even pay for. And then they occasionally make mistakes because they're human beings, what dicks. FUCK YOU MODS!

Seriously though, thanks for all the hard work guys, I don't even want to think about what this site would be like without you.

It is refreshing to see people apologise for their errors and I don't approve of giving volunteers a hard time for honest mistakes. However, (you knew there would be a however), I think the mods should look deeper into how mistakes occur. It seems to me that the consensious amoungst the mods is NMR/CDs bad - Pausing good and they allow this to consensious to affect their decissions. Some players are quite happy with NMRs and CDs, perhaps they NMR as a valid tactic which they can then represent to allies as a missed oppertunity. Perhaps they see CDs as just another varible to be dealt with by diplomacy. Perhaps they dislike logging on and seeing their points tied up in games that have been paused for a week. I'm not saying any of those points of view are more valid than those members who think all NMRs, CDs should be avoided and pauses should always be granted, but they are views that seem to be treated with a little contempt by some members and that saddens me particularly where it can influence the outcome of a game.

My other slight gripe is consistancy - I'm happy to belong to a site where the mods say they will pause games if 3 players request one; or a site where pauses only get granted with a 100% vote but it is hard to plan stratagies where most the time it is 100% vote required but sometimes you can appeal to a mod and get a game paused without unanimity.

I also think the mods can save themselves work and hassle if they have a blanket "sort it out in game" approach.

Alternatively if the mods wanted more work they could collate every players' living Wills so that they will know a players wishes if they were to fail to log on?

Geofram (130 D(B))
15 Dec 11 UTC
Because we must handle every request on a case-by-case basis, the nature of Moderator decision-making can fluctuate, but always walks down guidelines we've all discussed and agreed too.

Currently, we make all attempts not to grant pauses, draws, single-game CDs, or other intervention without contacting and hearing back from every player in the game. Obviously if someone isn't responding to us (It is a RULE that you be contactable by your email), then we must ignore their bid for an opinion on the matter.

In the grand scheme, this ended up being a small mistake with little impact on a game other than to cause a lot of yelling. We're not going to call Internal Affairs and have a sweep down of the whole Moderation team over this. The case is closed, thank you and good morning.
Leif_Syverson (271 D)

"I don't approve of giving volunteers a hard time for honest mistakes."

Bingo..

After all what are you gonna do, fire them?

'Hey sorry, I know you give your free time and all and make diddly squat (sorry you don't even get diddly squat you get nothing), to moderate. However, you're not doing your volunteer job the way I want you to, and I am not going to step forward and do it instead, and there is no chance in hell I am going to make your job easier, so I think you should be fired.'

For those who have ever volunteered their time, only to have their service resented (let alone appreciated), I present you with: "The Volunteer's Pink Slip." Oh, and there is no "Volunteer's Unemployment Compensation" so you are screwed. Goodbye and have a nice day!

Keep up the good work Mods! Many of us do appreciate what you do.

Great, there go 4 of my 5 quality games. I was under the impression that a player would not be banned if they wanted to leave. I know I read somewhere in the forums all you could do is not log into your account if you decided to leave. I don't get why Draugnar was given preferential treatment.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
15 Dec 11 UTC
He wasn't.

Banning users upon request is SOP.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
15 Dec 11 UTC
Well. By getting banned when you leave, it allows games to replace the player who left without waiting for him to CD, so I suppose that is a plus.
Sargmacher (0 DX)

@abgemacht: What does SOP mean? I didn't see that one on the acronyms list = :(

First of all, thanks very much to the mods for their good work in general.

Second of all, I am in a game with Draug which was affected by him being banned and then un-banned. Can someone explain what all this was about?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
15 Dec 11 UTC
He asked to be banned, the mods waited, then he asked again, they agreed. Then some people asked him to come back and finish his ongoing games so a ton of people wouldn't be effed over, and he agreed.
