Time/Phase
When making a game, does the time/phase mean time per turn, or for every phase? So if I put 1day/phase, does that mean it would take 3 days to get to Fall 1901?

Frozen Antarctica
I am not sure if this has been complained about before, but I think the World Diplomacy variant needs sharp criticism over one flaw that really stands out: Antarctica. Please read on...
TJH82 (107 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
...Granted, the variant is not supposed to be a true reflection of real-world geo-political realities. I get it. I also understand that the Supply Centers were chosen based on balanced game play. However, even when one allows for those liberties, the entire notion of Antarctica having 7 SCs really bothers me.

Even when one considers only the strategic-assessment-of-game-space angle, the idea that Antarctica would have 7 SCs, nearly the same as South America, is absurd. I could understand perhaps 1-3, but seven makes Antarctica simply far too valuable, because it looms as a prize that countries in the southern hemisphere have far too much incentive to fight over.

Then there is the fact that they actually put a nation on Antarctica. I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous. Again, I do not say that from merely a practical or real-world perspective: it just makes the game worse. The country has far too many options, to say nothing of a strategic "wall" that no one can go south of.

Finally, I would like to point out that, adding SCs all over a variant map for the sake of balanced game-play should have its limits. I can live with, for example, Afghanistan being a SC while the mid-western U.S. is not, since it helps balance out the map. But at least people can LIVE in Afghanistan! At least it is, by definition, habitable. It can, and does, and has, sustained civilization. But Antarctica? It strains the credibility to the point where the game is less enjoyable.

Nobody ever has sent, and nobody ever will send, fleets of ships or divisions of soldiers to capture vast sections of Antarctic ice sheets. And if they do, it won't be to capture the resources necessary to create more fleets and divisions. Afterall, that is what capturing SCs enables you to do: obtain more resources to grow your military.

Anyway, I think a new World variant is desperately needed, and I wanted to know if anyone else felt the same way. There is such potential to a world variant of Diplomacy, I just think the one that exists is flawed. And, at the top of the list of its flaws is Antarctica.

And all that oil isn't a valuable resource to grow your military? Please.

I like what you said about Antarctica being 'a wall that no one can go south of' though. This is very true and unless someone takes on Antarctica in the early game, it seems very hard for people to make a worthwhile attack against it.

"Rocks in Antarctica have been suggested to contain oil or gas. Even if this was the case - no drilling has taken place to find any - it is unlikely that they could ever be exploited commercially."

Sorry THH82 but of course the Cool Antarctica website would say something like that - it is a left-wing environmentalist website adorned with pictures of baby seals, penguins, and polar bears.

It means nothing to governments who want to secure their energy supplies as easily as possible - who would rather pour money into exploring and cracking open Alaska (the US), the Arctic (Russia/Canada), and the Antarctic (most Western countries) for their oil and gas supplies instead of dedicating time and resources to creating sustainable, clean renewables.

It's a sad truth - but maybe you're right. We should fight to have Antarctica removed as a nation from the world map because, at the end of the day, it simply fuels the fire of propaganda for populating the South Pole and destroying it for the resources. Remove Antarctica from the world map, I say, and support the efforts to keep Antarctica, the last remaining wilderness, free from human impact!

So it's got all you need:

oil and baby seals!

Who DOESN'T want to send fleets and armies to Antarctica?

I will allow that the website I posted seems to have a left-leaning agenda, but I think you are missing the point. Let's just look at this from a business standpoint: any oil in Antarctica is going to be very expensive to harvest and move to market. Period.

Now, certainly one could argue that, if the world supply is low enough, demand will spur us (the world, not any one government, but human beings) to grab what oil we can from Antarctica. I am making no argument (here) whatsoever as to the "goodness" or "badness" of such a play. My point is: it's going to be expensive. And it would come about only after traumatic shocks have otherwise occurred in the oil market.

So, I think my overall points deserve a fairer treatment than: "silly environmentalist wants Antarctica removed from World Diplomacy to prove a larger point." In no way was that the intent of my post.

But I do thank you for the discussion.

The Antarctica Treaty prohibits mineral resource exploitation on the continent, as well as military activity.

That's not to say it won't get broken, but it will hopefully at least avoid a war over the place in our lifetimes.

As far as the map goes, I believe an option of attack from the north out of the Arctic Circle would be better then taking it off the map entirely. However, I do think the Arctic Circle should consist of more then one space also. This would give multiple attack positions from a number of countries in the north. I know it is not accurate on a geographic stand point but as far as the game aspect it would make it more fair. Especially if that is the reasoning behind it having 7 centers. This is only my opinion and is only a weigh in on the issue of the game map.

A world map will never work. Hell, the standard map barely works, what with how Italy and Austria are at a real disadvantage unless they're being run by a competent player.

Just give up on big variants. Saves you from heartache like this.

Antarctica having 7 centers isn't a bug either. Nice try though.
And the 7 SC antarctic is a very good thing. Rather than have it be a single space such as the north pole (what a pain in the ass space) they broke up the antarctic into many, many coastal spaces. This makes the whole fleet vs army situation in the southern hemisphere much more dynamic than in the north. That's why we usually see a quick domination of the north by 1 or two powers, while the south is split and fractured easily

Hi,
Sorry to everyone in the Second Series of my informal gunboat games but could everyone please vote cancel? As per the discussion led by Babak and ulcabb in threadID=803223, it has been decided that all the games must be cancelled and the tournament restarted.

Sorry about this inconvenience. Thank you for your continued understanding through President Eden and Mr. Crispy's replacements.
