Friday Around The Horn! Sports Fans, Is It Safe To Say...
1. The NHL has leapfrogged the beleaguered NBA as 3rd most popular out of the Big Four Leagues (NFL way in first, MLB in a distant-but-decent 2nd?)
2. The USA's interest in the 2012 World Cup will be higher after the '08 run?
3. The Angels' Pujos/Wilson pickups make them favorites to make the LCS?
4. The Ravens have supplanted the Colts/Patriots/Steelers as the AFC Superteam?

1. YES...a good season--except for my Ducks! GAH!--with some very good competition in key markets like LA, NY, BOS, and the ressurection of Canadian Hockey Franchises--first the Winnipeg Jets, and with the arena deal struck in Quebec and a realignment that would allow the Yotes to move to QBC free of alignment hassle, presumably AT LEAST one more, the Nordiques of Quebec, are on the way--AND A GREAT STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS AND FINAL LAST YEAR...

I'll put it this way--

Here in LA, a basketball MECCA, I know AT LEAST as many Kings/Ducks/Sharks fan as I do Lakers fans--pfff...ZERO Clippers fans!--and the NHL is being talked about, NOT the NBA, even with it coming back, even with the Xmas game looming...

If anyone talks about basketball, it's usually UCLA b-ball.

The NHL has solved a good deal of its problems and has some great, great players and competition and rivalries worked out--and the Ducks SHOULD be engaged in one of them but are just incapable of playing defense...GAHHHHH!!!!--and the NBA now has this HUGE Chris Paul fiasco AND now a tampering charge with the Nets and Dwight Howard AND just general discontent with how the league is run.

David Stern, congrats--you managed to out-screw-up Gary Bettman.

(Somewhere, Roger Goodel is smiling, knowing he's the one good commish, and Bud Selig is HUGELY grateful with Bettman and Stern making him look almost decent...)

2. I think so.

I know I'll watch, and I NEVER would ahve in '08 if not for the run...

We'll see, I'll see what some of you all say, but hey, I think so...

3. Yes.

The Yankees/Red Sox are always favorites there...

I'd argue the Angels just became a Superpower like those two...the Tigers/White SoxIndians have nothing on the Angels, and the Rangers have blown it TWICE now in the World Series, and now have lost C.J. Wilson to a divisonal rival.

4. YES.

The Colts are dead.
The Patriots are becoming the 90s 49ers...good offense, bad defense, a playoff berth, but an exit from the playoffs...their time has passed.
The Steelers are still a good team, and a Ravens/Steelers AFC Championship showdown scould--maybe should--go down, it would be EPIC...

But even with the Ravens losing the previous playoff matchups, I think this is the Ravens year--Flacco's come of age and that defense is THE BEST in the NFL.

Ravens/Steelers and 49ers/Packers are my Championship picks...

And that sounds AMAZING, ANY combination of those teams in the SB is great.

1: no. NBA may be down atm but it will resurface.

2: nobody cares about LaCrosse dude.

4: too soon to say. I'd stay the Patriots need another losing season or two to give up that title - but the Ravens do appear to be the heirs apparent (Jets?)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

2...was about soccer...?

4. The Jets? They're struggling for a WC spot, the Ravens are cruising..;

1. Wait, did the lockout even happen? Stern's megalomaniac veto of the Paul trade borders on Bud Selig's All Star tie fiasco-level stupid. The Hornets get completely screwed on the deal, the Lakers chemistry is ruined, and any shreds of credibility the league had remaining are now gone. Stern has lost control of the league and it's time for him to go, no matter how good a run he's had.

2. Yes. Unfortunately, FOX is televising the World Cup, so we get to listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver talk about soccer and hate the Yankees.

3. The Angels are definitely better, but Pujols is the centerpiece of a pretty thin lineup. Hunter and Abreu are both pretty old, and Vernon Wells is terrible. Their rotation is definitely the best in the division and probably in the league. However, the Rangers lineup is still stacked, the Tigers have the best pitcher in baseball and another solid lineup, and the Yanks/Sawx/Rays are always going to be good, so don't pencil in the Angels for a World Series trip just yet.

4. Talk to me when the Ravens are actually in first place in the division.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
10 Dec 11 UTC
1. Absolutely not. The NBA still has a much larger fanbase and a deal with ESPN. NHL is going in the right direction, and the NBA is going in the wrong one, but the NBA is still well ahead of the NHL in my eyes (and I'm a huge NHL fan)

2. What's soccer??? I have no idea the answer to this question.

3. Nope. Still strong contendors out there, and I think Wilson is an overated pitcher.

4. No. They may in a couple of years, but right now they all seem to be about even in caliber. Until Flacco shows some more good games, they can't be called a superpower.

1. It's hard to gauge from here in hockey mad Canada. I definitely get the sense that hockey is trending up. But, let's get serious, I'm sure the numbers will show that the NBA firmly trumps the NHL in the states. And Tom Bombadil hit the nail on the head there. NBA has a way better TV deal.

2. Why am I even posting in this? Wtf do I know about American opinion on sports?

3. Nope. Well, they're up there in the contenders bubble but are they categorically better than the Yanks,Red Sox, Rays, Tigers, Rangers, (Jays once they get Fielder?), no.

4. Yeah, I'm thrilled that Calvillo is coming back for another season. Oh, wait. What? Fourth down? Not sure what sport you're talking about.

4. Superteam is used too loosely. The Ravens are very good but still within the bounds of ordinary goodness. Green Bay is the only "superteam." Also, BAL have to be crowned AFC Champs this year for this claim to even be arguable, but i predict that PIT beats them in the playoffs.

"3. Nope. Well, they're up there in the contenders bubble but are they categorically better than the Yanks,Red Sox, Rays, Tigers, Rangers, (Jays once they get Fielder?), no."

-Yankees: OK
-Red Sox: OK
-Rays: ...Eh...I'd probably tie them...
-Tigers: I gotta give the Angels the advantage here--Verlander vs. Ervin Santana, C.J. Wilson. Dan Haren, AND Jered Weaver? Pujos vs. Melky=Advantage Pujos...Angels
-Rangers: See above...losing C.J. Wilson to a division rival and that same rival buying up a bat that blasted HRs off them in the Series? The fact they've choked twice? ANA
-Jays...seriously? the 4th-best team in the AL? Even if they did land Fielder--and I haven't heard talk of him going there or even thinking about there, what's your source?)--Pujos>Fielder, at least for now, and the Angels' staff certainly trumps the Jays, PLUS...the Jays aren't going ANYWHERE in a division with the Yanks/Sox/Rays.

The Jays are like my Mets in the NL East:

Losing stars--Halladay, Reyes--and while the faithful remember glory days past...in the NYY/BOS/TB-stacked AL and PHI/ATL/MIA-stacked NL East...

It's gonna be quite a while before either team realistically contends.

The Angels HAVE to be favorites now to win their division, meaning they'll either face whoever in the AL East makes the playoffs but doesn't take the division--so either BOS or TB, most likely--and in either case, that's at least a 50/50 shot for the Angels with their rotation and now Pujos giving some major pop, OR the AL Central winner, ie, likely the Tigers, MAYBE the Indians if they can hold it this time...and I see the Angels beating either team, albeit in a 5-game series.

That DOES take them to the ALCS...

The Jays were a bit of a homer joke... Arrgh, it's painful.

You have a good point. They probably do have the 2 or 3rd best odds to make the ALCS.
Remember, there will be two wild card teams next year which probably helps their chances as they might end up playing a weaker wild card winner.
Ummm 2. World Cup is in 2014, not 2012?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
Oh, right, 2 WCs...

Well, better chance for the Mets then, right?!?! ...Right?

...

I mean, sure, we lost one of the best leadoff hitters and SSs in baseball, lost a good closer, lost our CF now...dealt our RF...but...but...oh, and David Wright's been ruined by Citi Field...and Ike Davis broke his ankle...and Johan blew out his arm again...but...

But there's two spots! two! and the division!

So even if the Phillies and Braves take the division and WC, we...we...

...I mean, it's just...just possible...just...
...
We can sit back and watch the Marlins take that slot, huh?

Or any other competent team...*SSSSIIIIIGGGGHHHH*

Transferring control of a country
We have a player in our game who is not going to be able to continue because he is too busy with work and just doesn't have time to commit to playing well.

Is there a way for the mods to substitute another account for his, or should we just have someone sit on his account for the remainder of the game?

So who's the MVP so far? Aaron Rodgers? Personally, I think its Peyton Manning. I dont think it can be stressed how valuable he is that a team that wins 11 games or more for the past decade cant win a single game without him. What do you guys think?

Programming Suggestion
I would like to see a bit of code added that automatically turned in an order for players who had zero SCs at the beginning of the build phase. Too many times have I seen build phase draw out because the guy who just lost doesn't put in the order for the destruction of his final units. Seems unnecessary.
