Disturbing trend
I'm playing in a few anon games (well, more than a few), and I've noticed that the game has changed over the years. It got better for a long time, then towards the end if this year, something has happened that has taken some fun away.

Razr vs. iPhone
So, I'm going to buy my first smartphone soon. I think I've narrowed it down to the Razr or the iPhone. The razr's hardware really trumps the iPhone but the iPhone is, well, the iPhone. Any thoughts or suggestions?

What is the mods general opinion on the following subject?
One of our mods <*cough*>abgemacht<*cough*> has just stated that outside of the game deals (threats, bribes, etc.) aren't "a big deal" to him and he wouldn't do anything about them. I have a problem with this. What about the other mods? How do you all feel? Is this a tolerable activity?

No Messaging...?
I have noticed that there tend to be a lot of games that have only public messaging or no messaging at all... I was wondering why people would even play this type of variation in the first place. it seems to me to be equal to playing a game of poker with only half a deck of cards...

can someone explain the appeal to me please?

There are a variety of under-handed things that can happen in this game. Aside the obvious multi-gaming and meta-gaming, where does the buck stop between what's "dirty fighting" and down-right wrong?

What do you tell your enemies? And far-away lands?
I am aware, that most of the best players communicate actively and frequently with everyone on the map, no matter seemingly irrelevant or outright foe. I have some questions for you:
1. What do you discuss with the countries you are fighting?
2. What do you discuss with countries on the other side of the map?

1: what it will take to end hostilities and be friends again.
2: rumors, threats, congratulations.

1. if you're in defense: - point out to other countries why you should stay alive. - choose one guy and work his allies by telling them how dumb he is and use his moves/chat as examples (even if they're decent moves), then go tell him that his allies think he's dumb - give them the future perspective, what happens after you get killed and who will go down next, paint a nice picture

2. rumours, friendly chitchat, ask if you can be of any assistance in their diplomacy, be vague about your own plans, but the closer the info gets to his home, the more concrete you should be

I was Austria once and got a three way fight in the west. Germany, France, and England all went for Belgium and fought each other for years. Only one was my neighbor. By talking to them even though they were far away I eliminated the threat of a Western triple, managed to stab one, and eventually soloed.
JECE (1322 D)
04 Dec 11 UTC
It's a very general question, but:

1. I generally exchange pleasantries and chitchat, but also discuss possiblities for future peace scenarios that might work. If I made an obvious mistake I also complain about it.
2. This is where I curse my bad luck and despair at the stupidity of my neigbours. I also, of course, may sketch out a hypothetical alliance of some sort.
Jacob (2711 D)

I like to try to influence how the different powers. Jew the world and each other. I will often point oh things such as:

1) Russia has more centers than anyone else
2) what do you think about France supporting germany's hold. Looks like they might be allied.
3) look at how Italy has moved toward France. He is ripe for a stab!

Basically I am trying to keep the other powers all balanced, mistrustful, fighting, and out of position. Outright move suggestions usually don't seem to go over well, but if you can paint the right picture you can sometimes get the moves you want.
Jacob (2711 D)

Wow..autocorrect changed "view" to "Jew".

That's the most unfortunate message I think I've sent so far on this phone...
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Dec 11 UTC
LOL! Yeah, that came off as totally anti-semitic. Autocorrect strikes again.

I was going to point out that there is no irrelavent nation, at least at the start, in classic as any nation you don't share a border with, borders one you do. Turkey and France have Italy (sort of) Turkey and England have Russia, and Russia and France have England and Germany. So never discount the country on the opposite side of the map as an ally. Crush and meet in the middle!
JECE (1322 D)
05 Dec 11 UTC
Jacob: Ha ha, really? You would start the game deceiving people across the board for no immediate gain? Why?
spyman (424 D(G))
05 Dec 11 UTC
JECE I'll take a stab at Jacobs reasoning: you want the other powers to fight amongst themselves for as long as possible. Let's say you are Russia and you are figuring out whether you will ally with Italy, Austria or Turkey and then go sweep the board; while you are working that out you don't want that England /Germany alliance getting their shit together right from 1901 and moving across the board as a unified force. No. You want to fight amongst themselves. You want to see mistrust, stabs and switching sides. Anything that holds your rivals back and delays their growth.

I must admit I lack imagination when it comes to making up stories. I don't do it all. I plant seeds certainly but it is usually pointing out realities or possibilities rather than false rumors. I don't actually lie as such, "I change my mind", which amounts to almost the same thing in that my words may not equal my actions.
AzygousWolf (100 D)
05 Dec 11 UTC
I have found countries on the other side of the map to be a vast pool of info, and most often are willing to part with that info almost for free because it doesn't affect directly. "Newer" players (cause I've been around for so long... *cough*) tend to be a little looser lipped, I've found, when talking to "far offs" because they fail to realize the secondary effect of them talking about their current and future plans...

me personally, I like to... *shuts up* on second thought I'm gonna keep what I like to do to myself... lol
Jacob (2711 D)
05 Dec 11 UTC
JECE - spyman worded it better than I did. I don't outright lie to players across the board. I point out realities and possibilities. I put my own spin on those realities and possibilities as well.
fortknox (2059 D)
05 Dec 11 UTC
ok, autocorrect going into my profile, Jacob. That's just awesomely terrible! :D

To answer the question, I'll go with what Thucy said. Anything. If I'm dying to the biggest power, I'll offer up an SC to prevent further harm or offer to help the player solo if I can get in position to do so. Anything to survive another turn...
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Dec 11 UTC
Listen to fortknox. He's not lying about offering to help the big guy get the win. But we can't discuss that cause the game is still going on. :-)
