I guess I successfully predicted the future in the October ghost ratings topic
As of Friday, I was in four games. In the last 24 hours (well, 30 technically, but it's close) I received the following message three times: "You were defeated, and lost your bet; better luck next time!" Bye bye, highest GR spot for me to date. I've never been so soundly defeated so often in so short a time.

The United States Shouldn't Have Entered WW2
The United States intervention in World War Two cost 418,000 American lives. And, really, what did the United States gain from it? Hitler was gone and Nazi Germany was destroyed, but much of Eastern Europe running from East Germany to Russia was under the (de jure or de facto) rule of Stalin and the Soviet Union. U.S. intervention fostered the spread of communism by destroying its primary opponent, fascism, thus setting up the Cold War for the next fifty years.

The Octopus
I have always been intrigued by this opening (sev-->black sea,
warsaw-->galicia, moscow-->st pete's, st pete's-->gulf of bothnia) but have never really had the balls to try it out. Does anyone prefer this opening/has anyone won by this opening? Any general thoughts on its merits/detriments are welcomed.

Maps
Hi I used to use the email dip judges, and am rather new to the Webdip site. I really like the setup, but I'm not a huge fan of how the maps are drawn. is it possible to generate a "results" map without the arrows for a more uncluttered look?

Hoe is het in Nederland?
Hoe is het in Nederland dan? Ik ben alweer een poosje weg daar. Hoe is het weer bij jullie? Zijn jullie ook dat gezeur van die Wilders zat of is ie nog erg populair bij sommigen? Ben benieuwd.

New fast pased game!
I am wanting to sit down and play a good game. I was wanting it to be 10-20 min for each turn. Bet only 5. It would be zero but it seems that is not allowed. I require 6 additional players. If you would like to play reply to this thread and spread the word. Once I have the needed players I will post the link to the game. Enjoy, looking forward to a game and have a good day.

Irregular etiquette... cheating
In game Supper's ready France and Austria has a strange comportament:
Austria has 18 SC plus other 2 SC to conquer to France and win instead he does not finish the game leaving the SCs to France while France announces that he wants more England's SCs before Austria win...
It's not regular do I ask the intervent of moderators...
Thanks

Male / female pay equality
I just read an article on the BBC, basically someone got sacked for saying women in New Zealand get paid 12% less, but it's because they need more leave (in particular he hinted at women's menstrual cycle as causing regular sick leave in some women)..

A word on trolls
If you see someone post something so ignorant, so enraging, so *wrong* that you just *have* to respond - the odds are they don't believe it and are just trying to get a reaction. Mute is your friend

cheating!
when someone is playing 2 countries in a game or chatting to another player to co-ordinate moves in GUNBOAT, Is there anything that can be done to ban them. Ive checked there records and they have played together alot and the cheating is clear.
Send an e-mail to the moderators. I believe it is [email protected] but you might want to confirm that in the FAQ
Send them all the evidence you've gathered as well, as that will help them act.

@Balaran: What may look like suspiciously well-coordinated moves might be high quality players correctly guessing other's intentions. Once Lando and I were accused of meta-gaming because we struck up many profitable alliances in our gunboats - but I can assure you that was not the case, and we were just adept at playing in gunboats.
Sargmacher (0 DX)

Having said that, I just saw the final convoy in your most recent game: gameID=70229 and am indeed very surprised to see such well-coordinated moves.
Balaran (0 DX)

yes Austrian convoy from syria to STP , convoyed by turkey and Italy. This was gunboat!!
Sargmacher (0 DX)
18 Oct 11 UTC
Yeah, after looking at the play it is terrible and shocking - that convoy wreaks of [edited out for forum's sake]. I was in that game but unfortunately I forgot I had joined when the game started, missed the first turn, expected everyone to cancel or draw - as is etiquette in such situations - but expected in vain and decided to just withdraw from the game as quickly as possible to continue with my studies. I was very disappointed with that game and based on the poor etiquette it doesn't surprise me to see this sort of behaviour as well.

The mods are unpaid volunteers. You need to give them time to investigate. If you haven't had any response to a complaint within 4-5 days, by all means email again with a reminder - but you can't expect a same-day response to every single email.

*Im not making a cheating accusation, I just enjoyed looking at the game* disclaimer ;) :I took a look at the gunboat game you guys were talking about, wow.. Entertaining piece of gunboat, LMAO.

I'm also quite new to the site and i wanted to join that same game you referenced last night, but I didnt because a week ago I was also in a live game that is still under investigation. So I thought I'm not gonna risk my points in another possible fix, I'm glad I didnt. I guess its just impossible to play live gunboat at these low point stakes, without being suspicious of unfair interference, its really a pity.

What I dont get though is that when the mods found a game to be subject of cheating they dont delete it and give the points back. Maybe a more veteran player can tell me why? Is that too much programming/maintenance work for them? Or is the site unable to process that? Any other reason?

I guess the solution is that we should make live games with passwords to check who joins..
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Oct 11 UTC
The mod powers don't include the ability to cancel a game after the fact, and all programming and moderation on this site is purely done on a volunteer basis. No one is getting compensated, not even Kestas. Our donations all go to paying for the hosting servers. So unless you are a programmer and want to make those mod powers a priority, I'm afraid it will have to wait until someone else does.
MrcsAurelius (3051 D(B))
18 Oct 11 UTC
Ok.. I was just curious. I thought maybe there was another reason than just a practical one.

I know the Mods and the creator of the site are all volunteers. Pretty awesome volunteering!

BTW: I was wondering how you can donate? I havent come across it on the site. I'd be def willing to, considering the good time this site has brought me so far.
MrcsAurelius (3051 D(B))

fortknox (2059 D)

OK, folks.
First, as said by others, please do NOT make cheating accusations in the forum.
Second, we are volunteers. We work when we have free time. Investigating meta and multi isn't something we can do in a couple minutes. It requires an investigation, and sometimes communication back and forth between mods.
Third, we aren't required to tell the accusers everything that is going on. I, personally, usually send an email saying I'm looking into it and that's it. Decisions and such that are made are done to the accused players. I don't try to go back and let the original accuser know what the punishment is if there is one. The last thing I want is people saying "I've accused 15 people, and all were found guilty" or some gaming of the system/status symbol. We try to even things out, but we can't always do it perfectly.

If you think this is simple or cut and dry, you are mistaken. If there is cheating and it isn't blatantly obvious from all the things we check, odds are, the person won't be punished until after the game in which he/she is accused. Like I said: It takes time.

Please be patient. We'll get to it. Don't expect it to be a quick process. We get a dozen accusations a day and at least 60-75% of them are strong enough to warrant an investigation... which takes days. So it can be a slow process, but we'll get to your issue.

Young-Earth Creationism
I learned today that, according to polls, a solid 40-50% of Americans believe in Young-Earth creationism, the view that God directly made the Earth and humans (no evolution!) about 6,000-10,000 years ago. Yay for American intelligence!
