Public School's monopoly hurts American
The monopoly that public schools have on secondary education is one of the major problems that is doing damage to American society today. Public schools not exist for teachers and administrators instead of for students.

My fish died
My betta fish Cthulhu just died today. I bought him the same day I joined this site three years ago.

Ugh! No, I'd never play a roll-playing game. Total geed move.

I have read the books though.

deja vu... this thread reminds me of something... perhaps the last dying fish thread.

on the other hand, i was under the impression that Lovecraft wasn't that good at least compared to similar horrow. However considering the calibre of some role-playing games, Call of Cthulhu is definitely one of the greatest example in the horror genre...

Cthulhu is great to play but getting killed by Cthulhu himself in the game is not.

Sorry for your loss, Invictus. It wasn't that long ago my black ghost knife, The Ghostmaker, passed, so I feel for you. Bit with a name like that, he'll make the afterlife hell for all the whimpy Charlies and Freds.

Condolences, Invictus.

Actually, Lovecraft is pretty good. The strongest piece is probably "The Dunwich Horror." "The King in Yellow" (Robert Chambers, 1895) is another great story in the Lovecraftian vein.

Lovecraft is like the original horror. Badass as hell.

I find his works kinda silly, as a friend of mine once put it, the whole idea is "imagine something so scary you can't imagine it! Now be scared by it!" Uhhh...what?

Also it's hard to get past the appalling racist and anti-Semitic undertones of his work. Made especially hilarious because of his wife was Jewish.

yes, i think mafia-gator has the essence of my impression, though i admit not having read any lovecraft.

He's definitively a good author, Mafialligator. Herbert West blows since it repeats too much (I know it was a serial), but he's the closest the 20th century has to Poe. Still far away from him, though.

Sorry... :(

I used to have fish too, it sucks to lose them, I know (I don't keep any righr now, nowhere to put the tank.)

Never had a betta, though...but they sound like fun fish, as long as they don't kill others...

Sorry to hear that.

@Obi - Bettas only fight each other and then only males fighting males. Put them in with other fish and theyvare very docile to the point of being beaten up if the tank isn't an easy going community tank. The tough fish are oscars. They kill anything and are close relatives to Pacific and Piranhas.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Pacu not Pacific.

In college my housemates and I had a tank and each got a goldfish (six total). Instead of a relaxing stress-reducer, the tank was a slasher movie. Every morning there would be a different fish with a small bite out of it, and eventually they started to die. We finally figured out that the runty white fish was the culprit.

Bettas are beautiful and fun. Mine (long deceased) would dance with my fingers placed on the outside of its bowl.

Re Cthulhu (the Great Old One, not the betta): Mafiagator has a worthwhile point about the racism. "Call of Cthulhu" itself is particularly bad about this. Like many people of his time, HPL had a horror of so-called "miscegenation" and considered it a mark of degeneracy. "Mongrel peoples" are a recurring theme in HPL's work, and they are never on the side of the angels. Part of the cost of reading horror tales from earlier eras is that you get a close glimpse at what the writers considered horrible and inherently disgusting. In Lovecraft's case, this leaves a very bad taste in the mouth, to the point where you can get kicked right out of the story. I still consider Lovecraft's tone, imagery and a few of the characters great, though.

I had an angel that was constantly having its fins nipped to pieces. Turned out it was my puffer. He did not like the flashy fins.

Sorry for your fish, dude. I guess it was his time.

Lovecraft, I never got into it. What is it with me? I'm not into the Simpsons, Futurama, all this manga/anime stuff, Douglas Adams, Lovecraft, Terry Pratchett... Ugh. Too silly!
Ges (292 D)

@Yeoman: Your first phrase struck me as really funny. I can imagine you doing pet funerals:

"We are gathered here today in memory of Pepe le Mew . . . Sorry for your cat, dude. I guess it was his time."

You could do fifteen a day. Think of the money!

I'm with you on Futurama and Pratchett not being as great as advertised. Futurama has thin, unlikeable characters and waaay too many pop cultural references from heads in jars. Pratchett . . . as you said, just too silly. I did like "Mort," though.

Conspiracy theory.
Well, im paranoid, and im wondering what we do if the mods are multi accounting. And we all know they have multiple accounts to aid in spying, investigating, and all the other mod business that is in the grey area. We cant report it to the mods, but we can find out those accounts and not let them use them for such. And im just talking hypothetical here, not making any real accusations (for those of you fond of clue, im not to the point of making an accusation yet) ;)

Hey guys, thought I'd create a thread for anyone to offer their thoughts.
For my part, I think my play as France highlights the importance of sticking with a game even if things look really tough - I was fighting off 3 countries for the first half of the game but still came out on top. To get such a stiff competition situation was great fun! Thanks for the interesting game all and I look forward to no. 13.

Cheating in WebDiplomacy
I have sent a message to the game mods about a no ingame messaging World XI game Im in days ago without reply - and I think its a clear case of either A) metagaming or B) Multi-account because the level of co-op without any supposed comms is unbelievable.

So far nothing at all from the mods - not even an acknowledgement of the mail - what should I do?
