Going Greek
This is one of my sons first year at UA and he recentyl recieved at bid to a fraternity, but I am hesitant to let him accept it. I didn't get involved with the Greek system when I was a student there and am unsure of how the process works. Does anybody have any experience with the matter?

Russia in gunboat
I find it very hard to play Russia in gunboat. I usually go to GoB, Galicia, Ukraine, Black Sea.

Which openings do you use and what is your strategy usually?

Anonymous and no messaging games
Why are they so popular at the moment? I don't see the advantage of being anonymous. And taking away de messaging just makes the game less enjoyable. You can't anymore backstab people that way, and that's the whole point of the game! Can sum1 explain me?

Rugby World Cup
Is actually going to be on network tv in the US. I'm looking forward to watching it.

Anybody have any thoughts on what we should expect? Will anyone knock off the All Blacks on their home turf? Will Ireland stop their downward spiral? Do any darkhorses like the Georgians or the Tongans have a shot to advance past pool play?

Stuff that breaks your game
Tonight I played a good live game, and was one of the leading players a few years in. Then my daughter woke up and had one of those fits that only daddy can woo... :-) I had to leave the game and when I came back my country had hit the slopes.

Let loose the times your game has been broken by outside factors!

As to what a government should not do, ask yourself why it operates in the postal business (USPS). Or the railroad business (Amtrak). Or why we guarantee over a trillion dollars of student loans (entire for-profit education sector). Or provide subsidies and direct investment to money-losing concepts in an attempt to deal with the environment (solar industry, ethanol industry).

Lastly, is it healthy that the government backs over 95% of the mortgages in this country? (Fannie, Freddie... yes, they are still there!) I am not stating that these industries should not exist -- not by a long shot. I am saying that our government has wandered far off the reservation by becoming the key player in all these areas.

Any of you "libertarian" poseurs complaining about Republican voter suppression via voter ID laws?

No wait, all of you twits love it when people can't vote. We're a "republic", blah blah blah. A concept you don't even understand. Freedom as always means freedom of the few to protect their class privilege.

Obama's Jobs Program: If the Choice is Between "Go Big or Go Home," Start Packing Now.

Excellent article at Reason.com

Oh if only Obama's administration would read it and take it's clear, simple realism to heart.

The starting point of any serious discussion about jobs, jobs, jobs should be the brutal fact that government, regardless of who is running it, cannot create positions apart from public-sector jobs. And those in most cases are zombie jobs that can only survive on infusions of fresh cash taken elsewhere from the economy via taxes. That's why state and local payrolls are being cut as federal stimulus dollars dry up.

Which isn't to say that government can't help foster an environment that makes it easier for self-sustaining jobs to be created. Indeed, that's the one thing government can and should do: Create a reliable and stable fiscal and regulatory framework that businessess can rely on. What might go into creating such an atmosphere? Precisely the sort of things that Obama and congressional leaders, Democrats and Republicans, have ignored over the past several years in the rush to embrace all manner of bailout economics. What's needed is a sense of stability to the general fiscal landscape that might help to contain the "known unknowns," such as federal spending levels, debt creation, market interventions, and tax rates.

Horrendous news on the employment front.

For the first time in nearly a year the economy failed to create new jobs on a net basis according to the Labor Department's monthly nonfarm payrolls survey on Friday.

No doubt Labor Day will be filled with more empty rhetoric that doesn't produce jobs.

With the jobless rate stuck above 9.0 percent and confidence collapsing, President Barack Obama faces pressure to come up with ways to spur job creation. The health of the labor market could determine whether he wins re-election next year.

TC - I would posit that the Government should be involved in certain sectors, and it is clear (from over the water) that Govt involvement in the mortgage market is not a good idea.

I'd defend the state ownership of the basic postal service. Without that, the idea that sending a letter within the country costs the same no matter where you live would go, and those people living outside of the maor metropolitan centres would have to pay more for a poorer service (because a private provider would focus on the higher volumes)

An Honest Question--No Right or Wrong, BLACK or WHITE Answer...Right?
Toni Morisson put foward the idea that, in "white" literature, "black" people are used to fill the role of "the other," ie, to help define the white people by contrast (usually positively...or at least, it was SUPPOSED to be positive--you can decide for yourself just how positive that can really leave people.) Thus, she said, blacks were kept seperate from others in identity, and inequality in society stemmed, in part, from this concept. My question is...
