The Poor need jobs not handouts
The overwhelming basis of arguments put forth by supporters of Big Government on this board use "the poor" as a rational for almost everything.
The problem with this line of reasoning is the poor need jobs not handouts.
Handouts keep the poor poor and dependent.

I think I'm causing them. I have internet explorer set to open it 500 times when I click on the WebDiplomacy link. And since I'm on all the time, I'm constantly refreshing the pages and stuff that crashes servers. Not to mention I know how to hack into the server if I wanted. I'm thinking about doing it just to show all of you how far I could go as the cult of personality here in WebDiplomacy World! Now give me 1200 D now!

When a page is loading I can see posts from a certain person I'm muting. When it fully loads they go away. That's fail #1. Fail #2 is that somehow, while a thread that I created was loading, I saw a post from someone I muted. I thought that people you mute can't see your threads?

To start with, as Italy or France, I always want complete peace between us as it otherwise really fucks us up. So that limits me to going against Austria or Turkey. Talks were good with both, but Turkey wasn't making commitments and was being very nebulous, so I went with Austria as an ally against Turkey.

Autumn 1901, France moved to Spain (sc) and built fleets in Brest and Marseilles, assuring me I could trust him. I did not feel I could trust him so I moved to TyrSea and delayed moving into EM. France moved north against England. If I had rolled the dice, the game could have gone quite differently.

Austria and I slowly gain ground against Turkey and Russia, but with Austria gaining centers. Austria kept promising to get me a center, but strategically it didn't make sense so I foolishly didn't press him on it. My mistake.

In 1903, England is defending against France, although Germany will be hurting England pretty bad so if France persisted would overcome England. Instead France moves south against me. Tells me again that he can trust me and that he will move back on England after throwing England off balance. A delayed western triple is certainly possible in my mind so I once again move back to defend, delaying taking a fifth center. And France does stab England and again, if I had trusted him, would have been in better shape.

Not that I had any reason to trust him. He never gave me any warning or consideration.

By the way, all this time England isn't talking to me much.

In 1904 I get my fifth center while France, Germany, and Austria are each at 8 and England has a few. France wants me to stab Austria even though I'm in a very bad position to do so. Austria wants to keep together and is moving north against Germany.

I figure if I try a poor stab of Austria, then he and France will grind me up. If I stick with Austria, there may be a chance of things working out for me.

By the by, I probably should have leaked some intel to Germany that I was pretty sure Austria was headed his way and not stabbing me, to slow Austria down a bit. Again, my mistake, sorry bud.

1905 I get my sixth center and Austria is at 10 after having stabbed Germany and I've moved against France. France has decided I'm an idiot and has muted me. And I believe he muted others as well. I have decided France is an idiot, England is a zombie, and Germany was foolish for not played it safer with regard to his southern border.

1906, Austria stabs me. I try and form a grand alliance E/F/G/I against Austria. But France isn't talking to anyone as far as I can tell and from what conversations we had before he muted me, I knew that he and I could not see eye to eye. I had given a game plan for stalemating Austria to England and Germany at this point.

My only hope of being kept in a draw was to help Austria and to still be stalemated. Austria said he wouldn't eliminate me if I helped him and he was stalemated and frankly I believe he wouldn't have. I even told Austria the moves I expected them to make to stalemate him.

And they completely fucked it up and let Austria have StPete. They actually had two chances to secure StPete and missed them BOTH. Meanwhile, France tells me that he'll protect me in Tunis. I tell him how they've lost StPete so Tunis doesn't matter. He doesn't get it. At that point there was no way for me to stop him.

So I said fuck it. Austria deserves the win more than the other three deserve a draw without me and I'm happy with the ending.

If I had trusted France (Ivo) when I had no reason to do so, things would have gone differently. If I had insisted on Austria getting me a center when I should have, things would have gone differently. If I had warned Germany to protect his southern border, things might have gone differently. I'll own up to that.

Will Ivo own up to how his feints toward me greatly helped Austria and allowed Austria to position himself against me and Germany? He already said no in game.

By the way, this is only the second time I've played Ivo and the first time we were France and Italy as well. We started off with a bunch of lunging back and forth before finally getting a neutral zone and profiting from it.

Thank you Alderian for this post.... I'm not going to write much... I just want people to look at the map history and they can make their own judgement.

After all, in a tournament where only solos count, in a WTA game:
- Italy didn't fight AUS at any point, actually the two were allied from start to finish, with Italy happy to give 5 centers to AUS in the process
- When Italy and GER decided to turn on FRA, they left unchecked a 10-center AUS behind with nothing to do anymore (R and T were eliminated) but stab them on the way to a solo.
- I may have muted both you and GER at this point... but it's important to point out that neither of you two made any attempt to change course or even talk with me, despite AUS slowly taking centers off GER. Only when MUN and VEN were lost was there a reaction... at which moment AUS was at 14 centers with SMY/ROM and NAP also about to fall.

I guess if you need someone to get to 17 centers before the thought of them soloing crosses your mind... the only conclusion is that it's France's fault that Italy played like an Austrian multi all game.
This is why you should never play the Classic Lepanto as a wait-and-see opening. Turkey is always threatened by it, which means he lets go of Bulgaria. Austria just needs to stab Russia in Rumania to get 7 centers (in 1902 no less). He is then in complete control of the Balkans, and already on his way to a solo.

Sorry to say so, Alderian, but you played badly. Especially the part 1903-1906, where you continued helping Austria carve up Turkey (knowing he'd eventually turn on you), was bad. So when you got to the point where you had no way to be included in a draw, it was your own fault, not France's.

But there has to be a reason why Italy, in 1903-1906, was more afraid of France than of Austria. Strategically, it must have been obvious that France would have been a much better ally. The difference must then be diplomatic. So either Austria has been a really great diplomat, or France was a shitty one. My bet is on the former, but Alderian's comments suggest otherwise.

There was a central alliance which, I was informed, was longer-lasting. I wasn't a threat to neither Italy nor Germany. Clearly they expected me to fall faster and AUS to wait a bit. War with Austria seemed more scary for both Ger and Italy and I just seemed an easier target.

Yes, I must be a really poor diplomat to get to a situation where I'm at war with 4 nations who are all allied in a joint effort to give Aus a solo ... I guess my mistake was expecting others to know the rules of the game :)
The main question that this spectator wants answered that would settle the dispute between France and Italy is this:

Were the following moves...
* France building two fleets in W01
* France moving fleets to MAO and Spa (sc) in A03
* France building F Mar and Italy building F Rom in W04

announced by the moving party to the other party? Those feints toward the Mediterranean by France seem to be the primary culprit in Italy's hesitation to move on Turkey, which directly led to Austria getting the vital foothold in Ankara and keeping Italy from seriously expanding. If the moves were unannounced, Italy's reactions in moving back to cover himself instead of moving further and faster into Turkey seem justified; on the other hand, if France announced them in advance, I'm not sure Italy can justify the reaction.

Let's cut the nonsense out. Here's what Italy sent me two hours before attacking me:

"I have weighed my options and come to a decision to not stab Austria. I don't think I could hold onto anything I grabbed in the spring. Additionally, I am choosing to end our previous agreements. I'm sorry but I have few choices. Among my choices is informing you politely in the hopes that you may take me on as a vassal should Austria stab me instead.
14 Jul 2011 Spring, 1905: And if my message to you comes after your last check in before the phase change, then I apologize for that as well, it was not intended that way"

We were allied before that and in very good relations, I'd say it's obvious from Italy's own messages. I find it very spineless that a few turns later suddenly there's a new story and a new explanation from Italy. Plus, when I offered peace to Italy and help to stop AUS he still kept attacking me.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

You unmuted me and offered peace when it was too late already. Germany and England had failed to protect StPete and you and I working together to protect Tunis wouldn't stop Austria from getting to 18. Something you failed to understand at the time. I tried to make peace with you earlier, but being muted decided I couldn't trust you regardless.

@basvon, I'd say really good diploming by Austria, bad diploming, IMHO, by France, and bad decisions by me.

@PE, to be honest, I'd have to look back in the game message log about the first one. The middle one was not announced by France. The last one was not announced by either party.

I already admitted mistakes in my original post above. I should have warned Germany to defend against Austria. I totally misplayed that. And I should have insisted on getting some builds earlier from Austria and making him take the risks involved in making that happen.

As far as I can tell Ivo, you accept no blame for how things went down. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) I have no interest in playing future games with you as we just clearly cannot see eye to eye. I'm sure you feel the same right back at me.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Aug 11 UTC
Oh, and a bit more explanation about my decision to move on you and to warn you about it. Being small, I wanted to be on Austria's good side and end up in a 2 vs 2 stalemate. I assumed Germany would protect himself against Austria and make peace with you. If Germany had made peace with you and moved to protect his southern border then Austria would not have had reason to stab me. That was the plan at that point in time. I failed to react to the news that Germany was moving on you rather than protecting against Austria.

Alredian, can you be a bit more specific what am I guilty of?

You declared war to me after "weighting the options"... your words.

Once you and GER attacked me, and GER also revived ENG to help, I was facing an alliance consisting of IT-AUS-GER-ENG.

You claim it was GER and ENG that failed to protect MUN and StP. I guess they can claim if you had protected Italy and not given five centers to AUS it wouldn't have mattered. Or maybe noone is to blame in such situations? :)

Yes, you are right about future games. If you still can't figure out what happened and how absurd your attack was it makes no sense to bother dealing with you.

The worst think in this game is you guys let Dejan win again. I think the Masters already have a winner......

About the game, sorry to say that but Germany and Italy played really, really bad, it looks like the game was a gunboat at some points. A Germany move to Den instead of Nwy that will keep him StP was atrocious. And why on earth Italy keep moving West after Austria stab is another unanswered question, this could have slowered a lot the Austrian solo race.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
04 Aug 11 UTC
Ivo, you are guilty of muting me, and I believe Germany, and only unmuting when it was too late. You are guilty of moving towards me twice, giving Austria a growth advantage. And worst of all, you are guilty of being a terribly unpleasant bloke that makes me feel like I can't trust you one inch.

And again, I'm not saying I'm perfect, I'm just saying, get off your high horse and join the rest of us that fucked up that game.

As for why I harp on StPete and not my centers, StPete was on the other side of the stalemate line from Austria so was a key center. My Italian centers were on Austria's side of the stalemate line. Big difference.

@rdrivera2005, I explained my continued westward move already, but happy to do so again. I tried to work with E/F/G to form an alliance to stop Austria and France still had me muted and frankly I didn't get much out of England and Germany.

I could have help stop Austria, but I had absolutely no reason to believe I would be kept around. France gave me NO reason to believe he wouldn't take me out the moment he could.

I was counting on Germany and England doing the simple task of keeping StPete so that Austria would still be friendly with me and wouldn't want me eliminated. If I had moved against Austria, then he'd be just as happy as France to eliminate me once Austria was stalemated.

Oh, and thanks to France, it was partly a gunboat game.
