Are no-hitters not a big deal anymore?
When guys like Ervin Santana can get one and we've had something like 10 in the past 2 seasons are no hitters going to become passe?

Also, what the heck is La Russa's major malfunction?

Account sitting.
I'll be out of town for four or five days, and I'm not sure what to do. I'm pretty new to this site so I'm not sure how it works, but I've seen people mention 'account sitting'? How does that work? What are the rules? How do I find someone to do that for me? I guess I'm just looking for a general explanation. Thanks in advance. Oh, and sorry if this is explained elsewhere on the site. Perhaps I missed it when I looked.

How Much Is Everyone Muting?
I ask becuase I see folks saying they're muting folks in threads more and more...and it just seems like a shame and almost unfair to me, really...granted I'm probably one of the most-muted on the site--at least I would guess I am--but even so, all the more reason I just can't mute anyone..."if you can't stand the heat"...? You can't have it both ways, give a critical opinion and erect a shield to deflect all criticism, even if that "criticism" is a foolish troll, yes?

Looking for sitter
I'll be away for 5-6 days next week and still have a couple games running. It shouldn't be too huge of a time commitment if anyone is willing, since one is a 4 day phase world game in which I have only a single unit. The other is a game in the summer gunboat tournament, so someone not part of that would be preferred.
I hope I'm not asking too much with only a few days notice, but if someone with a good reputation would PM me saying they can, I would be extremely grateful.

In the current budget debate you see two viewpoints-the House of Representatives realizes the Welfare State is bankrupt with $200 Trillion in deficits and unfunded liabilities. The Obama administration and the Senate think everything will be fine if they raise taxes and keep pumping devalued dollars into the economy.

gunboats are stupid and ruin diplomacy
the point of diplomacy is exactly what it says. DIPLOMACY. When we get rid of ingame messaging it does away with the crucial factor of diplomacy and results in no improvement of luck. It actually makes the game far more random and chancy than it should be. I believe that we need to get rid of this option to allow DIPLOMACY to take its course. Please add your comments about this.

LOL. Then don't play it. No one forces you to play gunboat. You CHOOSE to play gunboat.
People like to play gunboat because it requires very good tactics and how to read hidden supports, understand how the board shifts, and especially in a WTA game, how to stop a solo.
No.
For clarity's sake: My disagreement is with the original post, not zultar's response to it.

That's not true, zultar.

I like to play gunboat.
Yeah, theres amazing amounts of hidden diplomacy in a well played gunboat. The fact that you're posting this means you can't see it, and therefore are a terrible player.

SacredDigits (102 D)

The point of Diplomacy, as in any game or hobby, is to have fun.

The people who enjoy gunboats have fun playing them. Some people don't have fun playing them.

I don't have fun playing baseball. Doesn't mean I have any rational reason to request it be banned.
1brucben (60 D)

there is no hidden diplomacy. you are making up facts just so you can play your stupid pointless gunboat!!! maybe you should start your own game instead of using this DIPLOMACY website! this website is for diplomacy! were not playing axis and allies here!

1brucben, if you don't like Gunboats, don't play in them. It's as simple as that. Stick with classic Dip if that's what you're comfortable with. Gunboat games, though lacking in the communication of a normal game, are a lot of fun in their own right. You can learn a lot from playing in or even just watching one.
+1 smiley
Theres no point in playing diplomacy if you resign.

Gunboat is the Helen Keller of Diplomacy....you must find other ways to communicate. Apparently 1brucben is unable to pick up on the subtleties of people's moves, the implied messages, etc. Then again, in another forum post, he also claims to fear being exposed to any form of dissenting argument that might challenge his beliefs. Indeed, he is a contradictory fellow at best...

1bruchen has a point. Diplomacy is, in its essence, is about diplomacy.
But:
1. Gunboat is a very nice game in its own right, it is fun to communicate in subtle ways.
2. Gunboat is a very fun game, it is interesting to double-guess others intentions.
3. Gunboat is a time-efficient game, it is good to play with time commitment of 10 minutes / day.
Stone me, but #3 is the main reason I keep playing gunboat.

1st...really? No one, abgemacht, bihary, hell, even krellin, for my gunboat game link above?

2nd...I hated gunboats at first too, brucben, but it's true what they say, you just have to find other ways of communicating...it takes some getting used to, especially if yu're the type of diplomacy player who loves to chat and is rather verbose--like yours truly--but once you get used to it, it's really quite fun...

Which is why everyone should go and click on the link right now so we can play a game! ;)

"there is no hidden diplomacy. you are making up facts just so you can play your stupid pointless gunboat!!!"
Go to the gunboat thread and challenge the 6 best players to a gunboat game. If you manage to get a draw or win then we might take you seriously. Just because you are not capable of understanding something doesn't mean it should be banned.
"Just because you are not capable of understanding something doesn't mean it should be banned."

Am I the only one who isn't taking this person seriously?

Haha all my games on this site have been gunboat, and the reason I play, not because it's more fun, or more challenging, or any of that, is simply because I only have time to put in moves...I don't have time to type out extensive strategies and compromises to other players.
Brucben, how about you send a ticket to Kestas? I'm sure he would be pleased with this suggestion. I'm sure would be the best possible use of his time to remove gunboats from the coding on the site, remove all gunboats from the archives, refund points lost in gunboats and subtract points gained from them. After, gunboat is an abomination of the game isn't it, and should be removed at all costs right?
krellin (80 DX)
28 Jul 11 UTC
@1brucben: do you so fear actually responding to the substance of what I say that you simply repeat the same, idiotic statement over and over, thread after thread? I suggested above that you don't understand the subtleties of gunboat communication...and you, for some reason, responded that I am a puppet of the rich.

Exactly how much alcohol have you consumed today? Or have you take the Winehouse route and moved on to bigger and better narcotics?
krellin (80 DX)
28 Jul 11 UTC
@obi: Honestly, haven't joined you game because I am not a fan of gunboat, in part because I do not understand all the signals. I enjoy the drama of private communications and diplomacy. I think gunboat is certainly useful, and the fact that some dominate in it indicates it certainly enjoys it own skill sets....

I would love to play you....but I would prefer to communicate with you. Perhaps an Anon game...Pulbic press even?
