Does anyone want to create a standard game with a pot around 200? Post if you would like to. Im thinking 1day/phase, public players and open chat. Probably PPSC.

Help for feeling like a bad person?
So i'm in a high point non-WTA gunboat, and everyone is playing a top notch game, we are able to communicate using support holds, etc. But then I stab my ally for SCs and profit. I feel sort of bad about it, because i'm essentially stealing a lot of points from somebody that was nice enough to play with me.

How can I feel better about myself in these circumstances?

Question about GR
See inside
Maniac (189 D(B))

I try and play diplomacy as if I was sitting around the kitchen table with friends. This means that sometimes I give up a certain victory to draw the game and move onto the next one. Whilst this diminishes my satisfaction slightly, it increases my opponent’s satisfaction so there is a nett increase in how happy we are.

I don’t want to change my policy but want to know how this has affected my overall Ghost rankings and in particular how this month’s figure would be affected. This month I have a couple of wins; some draws and survives and will be beaten in a game soon. But I drew a game that I would have won easily. How has that affected my GR rank?

PS – explain any math as simply as you can.

Win > Draw?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
12 May 11 UTC
Haha, that is indeed the simplest way to put it.
Not quite sure what you expect to be told. As for how *much* you lost, well win gives you all the "credit" for the game, in a draw its split between the number of players still alive.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
12 May 11 UTC
Everyone puts 1/17.5 of their GR into the game, let's say for everyone in the game that equals 20. There' a pot of 140 for the game. If you solo a WTA, you get 140, minus your initial 20, you have a net gain of 120. If you four-way draw, you get 35, a net gain of 15. HUGE difference. If the game is PPSC you'd get a bit over 70, net gain of a bit over 50.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
12 May 11 UTC
PPSC victory that is...
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
@ MadMarx - Not quite understand where this 1/17.5 is coming from. Why not 1/7 for example (since 7 players in the game)? Could you clarify please? Thanks.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
12 May 11 UTC
I believe that's an arbitrary number which Ghost decided gives a good average. It has nothing to do with the number of participants in a game, but with the number of games played. Effectively, you 'invest' about 6% of your GR in any new game you start and then take out the corresponding portion (depending on how you did in the game) from the combined 6% GR of all players in the game (yourself included)
gman314 (100 D)
12 May 11 UTC
The 1/17.5 is a number put in to make the GR as balanced as possible. If you were to put your entire GR in every game would result in massive swings if there was a solo of any type (even in PPSC.) You would have to ask the Ghost Maker how this number was arrived at but I'm pretty sure that it basically means that the GRs don't swing too much or too little.
Maniac (189 D(B))
12 May 11 UTC
@ivo - that seems like a simple explaination. Just so I got it in my mind, in a PPSC game i have a GR of 200; player B has a GR of 1200 and the other 5 players have a GR of 100. Then the combined 6%s would be 114 and if I win 18/16 then I get 60.35percentage points and if I draw I get 57 percentage points (therefore i 'lost' just over 3 D for drawing when I should have won?
Maniac (189 D(B))
12 May 11 UTC
I assume then that it doesn't matter if I play 20 games or 2 games in the month?
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
Ok, Ivo and gman, thanks for an explanation.
So GR deals with PPSC and WTA games in the same way as dip points are distributed? For some reason I thought that more experienced players prefer WTA because of some benefits for GR.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 May 11 UTC
Actually, PPSC is a little more complicated. The calculation also take into effect where you should have ranked in that game relative to the other players. So if a top player gets eliminated and you were bottom player but came in strong second, you'll do better off the the second ranked player getting strong second against the top ranked player. There is no easy explanation for the math behind it.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
12 May 11 UTC
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how you can draw and get 57% of any game?
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 May 11 UTC
You can't. A 2 way draw will give exactly 50% of the total game GR to both players. Draws work the same in both PPSC and WTA.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
@ Ivo - 2-way draw I guess (114/2=57).
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 May 11 UTC
I think he means he gets 57 GR points in his example (not 57%)
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
@ Maniac - well, it does matter in the sense that the more games you play the more chances you have to change GR. But I guess playing one game with people having high GR is equal (in the meaning of GR change outcome) to playing several games with people having proportionally lower GR.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
@ Draugnar - Thanks for explaining! Looks like GR makes a lot of sense :)
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
12 May 11 UTC
"So GR deals with PPSC and WTA games in the same way as dip points are distributed?"

Only when distributing them at game-end. Not when calculating the investment at game start. For points - all players invest the same nominal amount of points. For GR - all players invest the same % of their total, but the nominal GR 'value' may be very different.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
Oh, so provided the same result (say, solo win) you're much better off in GR points if you played with stronger guys rather than weak ones?
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 May 11 UTC
And to clarify, the points in the GR pot are computed at game end, so you may start the game with 175 GR, meaning you put in 10 D if the game were to end then, but win several games and have a GR of 192.5 when this game ends and you will instead be contributing 11 D to the pot.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
12 May 11 UTC
"But I guess playing one game with people having high GR is equal (in the meaning of GR change outcome) to playing several games with people having proportionally lower GR. "

Not really. You can also lose in these games - and losing a lot of games against lower-ranked opposition hurts your GR as much as losing against high-ranked people. In general, the better the opposition the easier it is to grow in GR.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
12 May 11 UTC
I see! Thanks.

Yes, exactly :)
orathaic (1009 D(B))

indeed, and the point of GR is to get a good idea of where people stand relative to each other, so if you keep playing noobs they will only be contributing a small amount to the pot, but if you keep beating them then eventually you will be contributing more than 100 GR points to the pot and if you lose or draw you will get a pretty big net loss.

(say 1 player with 1750 GR points, and 6 players on their first game with 100 - they each put 5.7 D into the pot, and if you solo you make a net gain of ~34 D, but if you achieve a 3-way draw you lose the 100 D you put in, and split the 134 equally three ways with the other noobs, giving you a net loss of 55 D (while they each make a net gain of 38 D)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
12 May 11 UTC
if you only play people with the same Ghost Rating as you have then the winner or loser will gain or lose pushing them closer to a rating which measures their actual skill.

At least over time that is how the points should redistribute themselves among many games...

I'm pretty sure that's false?

GR just changes how the pot is made up.
Whereas the points are the same for everyone, GR just means different people have to pay different amounts to play. After this, the distribution of points is the same.

Not completely true, figle. Ghost makes it very clear on the site that there has to be a determining factor not just for victory against any given player, but also for haveing a better standing than them. From the site:

Because of the complication this maximum creates, it is necessary to look at the outcome as having two possibilities. The first is winning, and getting 18 SCs, the second is not winning and getting 16 or fewer SCs. You then need to look at both of these, and calculate the Expected Result that way. In essence:

(see site for equation image)

So all we need to find is the Expected success in non-victory. Herein lies a problem- that depends on who the victor is. If player 1, clearly there cannot be any success in non-victory for player 1, and if player 2 is victor, the chances of success are different than if player 3 is a victor, because the people you are competing against are different. In fact, if player j is victor, with j not 1, the success for player 1 in non-victory is given by:

(see site for equation image)

Oh yes, forgive my stupidity :)
I remember talking with him about this, but for some reason thought he took it out.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 May 11 UTC
So does that mean these equations no longer apply? That GR distribution is per normal PPSC rules post game?
Maniac (189 D(B))
13 May 11 UTC
just to confirm then I know that in a PPSC game winning 18-16 is better than drawing 17-17 but is the only difference the number of SCs ( you don't get a bonus for the win so to speak?)
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 May 11 UTC
I think you get 18 SCs worth of points on the site, so you get an extra SC in points, plus a win on your record. As far as GR goes... If the GR is exactly like points, then the difference would be the 1 SC. If, instead, it is as described, then it could be worth more (or less) depending on the level of opponents you beat.

Just one more reasont o always play WTA. ;-)

Forum issue: timestamps
I've just noticed that there's (something that's potentially) an error in the timestamps on the forum. The stamps shouldn't specify the day/date/month when that date is not *today*, but in fact they don't specify when the post was created within the last 24 hours. Perhaps this was intentional, but when I see a timestamp reading 03:00 PM, even if it's actually 2:30 PM, I don't immediately realise that it was yesterday. Issue or not?
