The NHL Playoffs Are SET! (Who've You Got?)
All 16 teams are set! The Rangers and Blackhawks just squeak in, the Hurricanes and Stars jsut miss out, and all three California teams, the Kings, the sharks, and my Ducks, are in the playoffs...more Californian teams than Canadian teams! So...who'll defeat who, and when the dust settles, which team will get to drink from Lord Stanley's Cup this year? :D

Will coalition survive AV vote debacle?
What do you make of Huhne going off the deep end on the Tories? I think Cameron's crowd really made a mess of things by attacking the Libs for broken promises when those broken promises helped support the Tories in government. I think an election is likely. What say you?

Capturing pieces
Are there any varients of diplomacy where a unit, surrounded and not able to retreat, are captured rather than destroyed (perhaps to be used as future bargaining chips). I would think that would add alot to the game. Just curious.

What's with all of the new live game advert threads?
Use this thread
threadID=579977

More effective and less annoying
yebellz (729 D(G))
09 May 11 UTC
Creating a new thread just to advertise a live game is less effective than using the designated live game thread (threadID=579977). The regular live game players check that thread when they are looking for a game or they just use the search function. If everyone created new threads just to advertise their live games, the forum would get clogged up with these posts. I know that many players, myself included, refuse on principle to join a live game if it has been advertised with a new thread or posted into an off-topic thread. So, advertising live games outside of the designated thread probably actually hurts the odds of getting it filled up.
yebellz (729 D(G))
09 May 11 UTC
Tips
1) Don't start new threads to advertise live games
2) Don't post live game adverts into off-topic threads
3) Use the designated live game advert thread (threadID=579977)

Look, this is just some friendly advice. If you choose to go against suggestions 1 and 2, I believe you are only hurting your chances of getting that game started. Such misplaced adverts are often overlooked or deliberately boycotted.

Tip: Shut up They can do what they want. Stop trying to be the boss. You control freak. Until Kestas comes on here and tells us to stop I and others have all the right to post as many live game threads we want.

Oh and also its SO ANNOYING when the thread is at the bottom its more EFFECTIVE for me to make a new post then scroll down, then add to the already existing one. Gosh that is SO HARD.

4) don't pm me about joining a live game. It is annoying as all hell!

Also, Riphen, Kestas has come here and told us to do what we like, He has told us we have the right to moderate ourselves.

And please recognize that we have some un-written etiquette rules here. It will helps us all get along. Thanks you.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

Riphen - if you post to a thread that's towards the bottom of the page, that immediately bumps it to the top. So, posting a new thread is not more effective.

i think the point is, he is to lazy to scroll down. But for the very same reason, this topic is also not very useful because in a day, it will leave the first page and no one will notice.

Riphen, feel free to make as many live games threads as you like. Just don't expect anybody to like you.
yebellz (729 D(G))
09 May 11 UTC
@Riphen: I'm not trying to be a control freak here. I'm actually just rehashing what I perceive to be a fairly common view shared by some of the people that frequent this website and forum. Some people may agree with me and some may not. However, I think I present a fairly logical argument for why people should stick to the live games thread. As I said, it's just some friendly advice for some of the newer people here, like yourself who has been on this site for only about three weeks. People can go and do whatever they want, but I'm just letting them know that they can advertise their live games in a much more effective and less annoying manner.

If he's too late to scroll down, he can fuck off.

@Riphen: By the way, your second reply is quite funny in an ironic way

Quoted from Riphen:
"Oh and also its SO ANNOYING when the thread is at the bottom its more EFFECTIVE for me to make a new post then scroll down, then add to the already existing one. Gosh that is SO HARD."

It's like you are satirizing yourself. Also you illustrate that you do not understand the fundamental workings of this website (e.g. that forum threads bump to the top upon reply)
yebellz (729 D(G))
09 May 11 UTC
@Victorious: Well, hopefully some people will see this before it drops into the archive. A thread stays on the front page as long as people keep replying to it. Even when it does drop past page 5 (and goes into the read-only archive), one can always still link to it.
Feel free to point people to this thread (threadID=718928)

By Sarcasm I meant my second post.
I understand where your coming from it is annoying but you dont look down on people because of it. You get past it. Dont hate people for expressing there rights and dont judge people. I for one would play with anyone on this site no matter what they post. Im sorry they just want to play a game.
youradhere (1345 D)
10 May 11 UTC
Riphen: Don't think he's judging you as a human being for responding rudely to a rude post. It's generally considered a nuisance to advertise live games in new threads or unrelated threads. It is your "right" to post them, but it's your responsibility not to do so. If you neglect your responsibility then don't be surprised if people disrespect you.

A lot of people won't play live games posted in separate threads out of principle. It's a matter of respecting the norms of the site.
Riphen (198 D)
10 May 11 UTC

Apparently there was a time when posts about new live games completely swamped the forum, leading to the creation of that thread. I wasn't around for it, but I get the impression that it was a very big deal at the time.

Next time a live game thread is started I want to see you guys jump there and post the thread link.

Maybe some people just dont know. Or maybe you should correct them. Slap them around a bit tell them there wrong. Its okay Big Brother.
youradhere (1345 D)
10 May 11 UTC
Or be ignored, or ridiculed. It's your choice, but you're both more likely to get results in the official thread and less likely to have everyone hate on you. Evidently the latter doesn't bother you, but the results should provide a motivation.

'Dont hate people for expressing there rights and dont judge people. I for one would play with anyone on this site no matter what they post.'

expressing your rights is one thing. following the 'normal' social conventions of this site is another. If you're breaking one social convention (posting outside of the LIVE games thread about live games) then how are we to assume you're not going to break another (like being a multi, refusing to unpause so a mod has to come along and force an unpause to 'keep the site fun' or NMR-ing in 1904 and 'ruining' a game for everyone else???)

is this somehow unclear?
yebellz (729 D(G))

@Riphen, RE: "I think I am kinda trolling."

Well, you might as well be trolling. What are you trying to accomplish with your replies?

I think you are misinterpreting my attitude and tone. Look, I'm not decreeing anything as a rule. Obviously, I don't and shouldn't have that power. I'm just offering some friendly suggestions here. Suggestions that I believe are mutually beneficial. People that make those posts, ostensibly just want to get their games filled and probably don't want to annoy people. Many such posts are just due to new players who are unaware of the live games thread. I believe that their games will be advertised much more effectively if they use the live games thread and the forum would benefit from more order and less clutter.

Sure, perhaps creating this thread adds to the clutter, but I do so in the hope of encouraging others to behave in a more orderly fashion. Of course they are free to behave however they want to, as the issue that I am raising is only a matter of etiquette, not of rule. However, just as you and others are free to needlessly start new threads to advertise live games, others are free to refuse to join such games. In fact, I think that is the rational response in order to discourage those threads.

RE: "Wow you easily get disrespected on this site then."
You have to give respect in order to earn respect. As the crux of this game is social interaction, understanding this principle may be helpful.

RE: "Next time a live game thread is started I want to see you guys jump there and post the thread link."
I usually just PM the live games thread link to the original poster along with a polite suggestion to use only that thread. There's no point in bumping their needless thread. Sometimes, however, people don't get it. Even after being politely informed numerous times and watching scores of their live games go unfilled, they persist. I thought that a thread like this, my first few posts, which politely and rationally explained why the live games thread is a good idea, would be a helpful note to refer them too.

RE: "I guess I just dont like conformist"
That's a pretty lame excuse for getting so worked up. If everyone else *wasn't* jumping off a bridge, would you do so, just to be different?
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 May 11 UTC
I promise not to jump off bridges! Will all the other conformists agree with me not to jump off any bridges? Maybe we can get non-conformist Riphen to jump off one! In fact, I promise not to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. How about it folks!?
SacredDigits (102 D)

I promise not to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. Must...conform...
Riphen (198 D)
11 May 11 UTC
There should never be anything as a social norm. That is the death of individualism. Let people be them selves as long as they dont hurt others or take advantage of others. I for one would use my own individual brain to determine that I am going to fucking die if I jump off a bridge.

You make me out to be one of those kids that says this "I liked that band before it went Mainstream." I actually get rather annoyed by those kids. I for one listen to whatever music I want. Not what everyone else is listening to. Not what no one is listening to. My own shit. Me. Using my brain to determine what I want.

That is how I believe we as humans should live. I guess thats the best reason I got for this emotion im feeling about this thread. So you go ahead and quote this and re-post in a few hours what you feel like you need to say. Cause Im done.

So the thread about OBL has been dragging on with the two sides getting nowhere. I propose a fixed-alliance game of Diplomacy to solve it. On one side will be me, Invictus and Santa Clauswitz. On the other will be Darwyn, Sicarus and mapleleaf. The final unalligned player will be someone who hated the entire thread such as Sayjo or Siddhartha. My challenge has been put forth, I hope you all accept.
