This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Schrodinger's Cats and Consistency...
Aimed at those of you who, frankly, make me incredulous as to just how many highly intelligent physics thinkers are on the site...so, Schrodinger's Cat--I understand that there's a cat, radioactive particles, a 50/50% chance the cat is dead or alive...or both...what are your thoughts? (And if that cat DOES blur the lines between the differentiation of states...well, YOU change every moment via experience...is there anything constant about us, or you as "you," for that matter?

Any interest in one? If so I'll set one up, I'd like to play one, but I dont want to end up in one with some Gun Boat veterans and get my ass handed to me.

Austria Gunboat Tactics
As I'm sure we can agree an AH/R alliance can be as powerful as any, but how in a gunboat game can Austria safely go about communicating this? Discuss.

Just a quick reminder...
Not posting cheating accusations is a rule. A mod pointed this out to me.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
The last paragraph of Rule 4 says,
"All accusations against other players must be made directly to the mod/admin team directly as specified below, in private, for this reason, and software bug claims must be genuine, even if only told to another player. "
That is, the rules explicitly refer to posting accusations on the forum

Clarification, this *thread* was requested by figle.
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Huh; seems to me it might carry more weight if. You know he was the one posting it. Being a moderator and all. Were as you are...well, a forum vigilante who those of us in our right minds try and ignore whenever you start complaining about people breaking forum rules.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
He is saving his 11111 forum post for something special. He indicated to me what it was, but I don't feel at liberty to discuss it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
And it doesn't make the fact that the quote comes from the rules page any less valid. The flying spaghetti monster could have directed me to it while I was under anesthesia having my appendix removed and it would still be valid.
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Okay that makes sense. Just making a point, which is that because of your decisions on how you feel it is the best way to "enforce" the forum code around here, your words don't carry much weight. I'll grant you it is a rule and it is perfectly valid. However your choice of deciding to call out members who break any of the forum code in an offensive and unnecessary manner, is inflammatory and while it might drive some people away in shame, others it will inflame and encourage them to break the code just to get back at you.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
I have only been doing any inflammatory attacks to people who truly know better, lately. If it's a new person I just point out that it is against the rulkes or bad etiquette and I do so politely.
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Rules I can understand, especially if your doing them politely. However calling people on forum etiquette, you can argue that they should know better all you want. They aren't hard and fast rules, so people can have different stances on them.

Example if I were to post a thread on a ongoing gunboat asking for a cancel and providing my reasons for needing one and you/other gunboat purists decided to call me out on it.Inflammatory or not I'd ignore you, and continue doing so. It is my belief that asking for a cancel is valid even if you don't think so.

Same deal with starting a forum thread on an ongoing full press game. You can yell and shout all you want. I'll either ignore you or get frustrated and start commenting on existing games that your in.

Soon as you start trying to enforce your beliefs your going to aggravate people, even people who wouldn't normally have a problem with following rules, or even trying to respect other players choices/opinions.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
But the mods have backed up that the forum is self moderating. If someone doesn't stand up and say "Hey! Don't talk about ongoing games!" then there is no self moderation.
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Yeah. However there is no rule against talking about ongoing games. (Just bypassing press restrictions. To which I feel should be axed for discussing pause or cancel in gunboats, but that is another thing altogether.)

Self moderation is fine. However when you decide that your opinion should be a rule then fully expect people to either ignore or get made when you call them out on it, and respond in a negative fashion. You want to be a forum vigilante fine, however your way of going about it is not that effective.

(Not sure were everyone got this idea that you can't comment on ongoing games. It isn't in the rules section. )
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
The idea came from a number of mods saying it once long ago. It took off from there.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
And honestly, discussing a game outside of the game is metagaming. Doesn't mean it's against the rules as not all meta is against the rules (pauses for life events are metagaming events for example), but the mods did say it once. But it's late and I don't feel like trying to search for it.
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
(Eh, must have missed it. Never really followed the forum back then.)

I'm going to stick with my position of it being completely alright. Unless one of the mods tells me that they don't want people doing it. Not that I want to create more work for them.

I just disagree and being that it isn't an official rule, I reserve my right to disagree on it.

Now that isn't to say I don't agree with anything your advocating. However I find your methods off putting and often they provoke the inverse reaction.

For example now everytime I see a cheating accusation thread, I have an urge to jump in to yell at the people who are calling the poster out in a non-polite manner. There is always one or two.
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Yeah it is Meta gaming. Attacking Turkey just because I had turkey for dinner and I appreciate the irony is metagaming too. As you say not all forms of metagaming are wrong. Of course I'm inclined to say that almost no metagaming is wrong.

Pre-planned alliances being an exception. Most of the time.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
As I said, I only get rude with the idiots who know better. Maybe tomorrow, if I think about it, I'll find a figlesquidge or abgemacht post advocating *not* posting about ongoing games.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Cross game deals are also meta and bannable offenses.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Most of the time. :-)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Right, I should clarify myself then shouldn't I :P
Firstly, the reason I was saving the 11111 post was because it seemed like quite a nice number to "leave" at, and as hinted at last week I'm going to have to take another break from this place (unfortunately its too effective at absorbing study-time!).

This thread came from me reminding Draugnar of one of the rules, since I know he's often near the front of the "Don't post accusations" group. I didn't ask him to post a thread explicitly, but it was sensible enough thing to do.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
There are lots of posts from us asking people not to post accusations on the forum, both before and after the rules page was added.

My opinion on on-going games is my own and not the sites. I think that they shouldn't be discussed not because its unfair on the game, but because it feels rude to me. If we met to play a game of diplomacy, you would feel rather offended if I was texting my friends about it?
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
Not at all. I think an open forum threat is similar to having people observing a ftf game of diplomacy without playing. And talking about it with the players. Honestly I wouldn't be offended in the slightest.

While I can understand were you are coming from. My opinion differs. Thanks for letting me know. =)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
^^ I would suggest this is reasonable if you agree in advance, like your analogy of having people observing and talk to them.
However, to start talking about a game where this wasn't expected is like meeting up for a game in a slightly public place (like a common-room or similar), starting your game, then seeing a bunch of other friends and going to talk to them about the game?
Anyway, as I said, there is a clear distinction there between rules and my views
damian (675 D)
30 Mar 11 UTC
I suppose that is reasonable. Out of courtesy, I'll avoid making threads on ongoing games unless it is agreed upon before hand. That way everyone should be happy.

Of course there is still my concern about cancels/pauses in gunboats. It's another controversial topic but would you consider it against the rules for a person. To mention a gunboat game link. Followed by a reason they need to cancel, without any mention of the situation in game.

I notice the BBC are now using in-page SVG content.
We've seen youtube/google et.al. pushing the standard over the last few years, but this is the first time I've seen a non-web company supporting the formats. Have we turned the corner?

Support Move & Support Hold
If this is against the rules, then pardon me; I looked through the FAQ and didn't seem to find an answer to it (that I understood)

I played through the game with some friends, but for the life of me couldn't seem to figure out support hold/support move. Can anyone tell me in clearer terms the difference between the two, and how to use them?

Interesting...I was wondering if it'd come to intervention--but to be honest, I'm GLAD the US and did so in this way--no troops, no occupation force, just batter them off the coast with one--and with friend England, two--of the best navies in the world--GREAT CALL by Obama in my opinion! Thoughts?

Etiquette on draw or cancel ?
gameID=49006. playing Turkey and a strange stalemate has set up. How long is too long to wait for England to eliminate France & Austria before offering to draw the game. No in game messaging disallows any communication. I would rather cancel than draw with 6 players still in.

Since we have such a diversly-talented group, and a lot of us are around or past our college years, I thought it might be interesting to see who's who on the site...and to ask some inter-collegiate-major questions (such as, again, I MUST ask...WHAT is the actual, practical purpose of factoring and the quadratic equation--I asked MATH majors and THEY ahd no clue!) ;) So, step right up and enroll--name, rank, serial number--erm, Major--and one interesting experience!
