Anyone wanna take over for Persia?
Persia isn't in too terrible of a position here, and it'd be really nice to speed up the game.

Ancient Medd - tactics
So I've played a few games. I was wondering what seems to be some sound strategies for Greece or Egypt - because I get my arse kicked playing both.

Diplomacy doesn't simulate 20th-C Warfare
A random thought from the "alternate history" thread: Diplomacy does not generate reasonable alternative histories from the WWI era, because it doesn't simulate modern warfare.

Anybody is in for one? I am talking about full press, 250+ points bet, 48 hours. Diplomacy is a dirty thing, and it is too easy to hide behind anonymity. Anybody in for the REAL thing?

Delete paused game
Hi there, I got a little question. Is there any way to delete an old paused game which is without any hope to get ever unpaused? I've got such a game (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=31234) and I'd really like it to disappear from the top of my games overview.

Validity of Four+ Draws
I'm curious to hear opinions about four-way (or more) draws. Are there legitimate games that can be pointed to as examples of a real "draw" with established stalemate lines, or are they simply an excuse to boost stats for games where people should have cancelled?
Katsarephat (100 D)

I can see the use of a four-way if you have two two-person alliances who are really tight and nobody wants to stab anyone because it will basically result in a two-way.

Five-way or more though? That's kind of odd.

six-way is possible when i convinced italy to suicide against france (and thus broke the france-russian-turkish alliance) leaving turkey with a close solo (and austria dead)

russia i nstp, on the other side of the stale-mate line... but i shouldn't discuss on-going games...

once it's over i'll ask all of the players to comment here (though it's a league game so we're less likely to explain all of our actions as they may bias further league play :)

I've been in legitimate 7 way draws where no one could make any progress. Usually, this is most common in gunboats, because you can't coordinate to eliminate people.

^^ And that was in 1909.

there is no excuse for a draw when a stalemate line has not been achieved.

but any quality of alliance who have reached a stalemate line (and are unwilling or unable) to stab (at the risk of losing the line, and being eliminated) is acceptable.
Parallelopiped (691 D)

I think you can have a 4-way where two large powers are fighting and two small powers are going for the draw. As soon as one large power appears to have the upper hand the other offers a draw and then unless the leading power accepts the draw he's in a 3-1 situation with the potential of being eliminated. Neither major power can attempt to eliminate the smaller ones without leaving themselves open to the other and if either smaller power attempts to break out of the situation they could see themselves crushed between the other small power and a handful of units from one of the larger powers.
Dynamic equilibrium.

oh, but if you can convince someone to draw because they are ABOUT to reach a stalemate line, and the game is getting boring, and nobody's going to stab anyway.. then you can achieve a draw diplomatically without going through the tactics required to actually achieve a stalemate line.

This is also acceptable, even commendable (assuming you convince someone to draw when it's not actually in their interest as they could still solo.)

Legit 5 way. England couldn't risk absorbing France and Germany due to the line, Russia and Italy couldn't turn on each other or England would be able to advance.
What? That's the most unlegitimate fiveway ever invented. Italy and Russia had a stalemate line set up from Tunis to Moscow. They could just retreat to the line, and let England eliminate Frnace and Germany. To me, this seems more of a three-way draw than a five-way.

But it is PPSC, so eliminating these two player wouldn't have yielded much.
SacredDigits (102 D)

It was also a 5 point game. England stated that he was planning on drawing with France and Germany up, and both Italy and I had recovered from near death, so we were happy with draws.

"But it is PPSC, so eliminating these two player wouldn't have yielded much."

PPSC vs WTA is irrelevant if the forgone conclusion is a draw. All draws are equal.

Also, the perfect outcome of diplomacy is a 7 way draw...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
26 Mar 11 UTC
very few diplomats consider a 7-way draw a success (it means failing to beat anyone and feels worse than any other better draw)
Sacred, if England had invested more time into that game, he would've won. He easily could've gotten an army or fleet into Prussia, swapped out the army Mar for a fleet, and then with that fleet have take GoL. Lots of possibilities that England simply did not try.
SacredDigits (102 D)
26 Mar 11 UTC
A fleet in Mar can't take GoL there...WMED and GoL support hold each other, NAf Support holds WMED, Tyrr supports hold GoL. MAR + Spain wouldn't be enough to crack GoL, even with MAO bouncing off WMED.
"All draws are equal" - not in my book they aren't. I'll remember this when I'm in a game with you. Wait a minute, I am in game with you. Now I only need to find out which country you are...
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))

In GENERAL- except for rare occasions - four player draws IN A PPSC are unusual and unlikely, and therefore typically an excuse to avoid for a true tactical or diplomatic resolution of the game. Even three person draws should be rare; shame on the "triple alliance" which "wins" the game and decides to draw. It's like kissing your sister

@ basvan:

I'm tempted to argue that all draws are losses, as you failed to achieve the stated purpose of the game, namely getting to 18 centers, but I don't REALLY believe that, even though a part of me does. What I meant was a 3 player draw in PPSC is the same as a 3 player draw in WTA.
Ah, then I get it.

What's wrong with kissing your sister?
gramilaj (100 D)
26 Mar 11 UTC
For me it really depends on what scoring system you're using. PPSC gives you the points regardless of how many people are in the draw,so if you can get a player down to 1 center then force him/her to work for you, you should go for it. WTA, unless you're going to win with a lot of people in the draw I try to get down to at least 3-4. There are some scoring systems (like sum of squares) that actually encourage you to keep people in the draw.

Two points for a cousin, four for a sister, eight for a mother :-)
Parallelopiped (691 D)

Well then, it's obvious. Sister kissing is inadequately rewarding for all the effort you put into it. In the same time you could have swiped three or four cousins or have had a decent shot at Indy's mother

What if you kiss a sister who is your cousin and you mother and your aunt?
Then your family is seriously fucked up.

I object to the sexist nature of this discussion. What about brothers, fathers, and uncles?
gramilaj (100 D)
27 Mar 11 UTC
I would love it if you kissed your uncle. 1 Billion points in my book.
I don't even think that's possible. sister + mother = your father fucked his daughter, and then it works if your dad is also your uncle, but that doesn't make sense at all
Also, you are not factoring in younger cousin vs older cousin. psh, amateurs.
