The Top 10 Greatest Militaries Of All-Time
I love philosophy, literature, and theatre, and hope to make that my life's work, but when I was younger, Military History was one of the biggest things for me- and it still is fascinating. So- who WERE the greatest Military Forces of All-Time, 10 to 1? 2 Notes: -Comparisons between time periods is inevitable, but just remember the merits of the each Force -"Great" can be forces that fought to conquer or for peace, and all branches of the Military should be considered

England in the world cup
So what do people think about England's chances in the cup? They got out of the group stage but now have to play Germany. England's had trouble scoring and Germany's defence are amazing so their chances seem slim. And if they do beat Germany, they have to play the winner of Argentina-Mexico, which will most likely be a very tough Argentina.

I think Julia Gillard will have have more mass appeal than Kevin Rudd. Rudd has negative charisma IMHO.
Pretty amazing turn of events though. Who would have predicted this 6 months ago? From PM with the highest ever approval rating to ex-PM in before the end of his first term.

Can an Australian explain to me exactly what happened?
All I remember is Kevin Rudd making an apology to the Aborigine population. I'm assuming that's not why he resigned.
largeham (149 D)
24 Jun 10 UTC
Kevin Rudd was voted in with high popularity. However, most people thought he was too far right when it came to some issues (labour rights and education among others) and others thought he was too soft on other things (asylum seekers among other issues, despite him being as far right on this issue as Howard).

Then he brought in the Emissions Trading Scheme, and he called global warming something like the greatest challenge of our time. Then he dropped when he didn't have enough support, and that left a sour taste in people mouths.

Then comes the mining tax. The government needs the money, and so the tax on "super-profits" made by mining companies is raised to 40% in the short term, and company tax will be lowered to 27-28% in a few years. Mining companies were furious, and launched a massive campaign against it, and unfortunately people were fooled into believing them, despite many economists in Australia and around the world praised the tax.

Anyway, Julia Gillard is much the same as Rudd, but she has much better PR, and therefore gives the Labour Party a chance to win. Otherwise, they're all pretty much the same.
De Gaulle (0 DX)
24 Jun 10 UTC
Well put succinctly Largeham.

And what happened was in the state of Victoria, the labor politicians, decided that they would back Julia Gillard if she was to run for PM, and oust Kevin Rudd.

So when someone leaked Julias thoughts on it, and the discussions, she had no choice but to make a stand.

So she met with the former PM Kevin Rudd on Tuesday night in an emergency meeting, told him she would run against him the next morning when Parliament resumed, and Once Kevin Rudd found she had an overwhelming number of supporters, he stood down as PM and now she is our new and first Female PM

I don't know anything about her... but I do understand that she's a non-believer (non-religious) - and I find that more remarkable than her gender. Pretty rare for non-believers to become leaders in democracies, isn't it? The usual thing here in the US is to loudly and often proclaim your heartfelt love of and faith in (the Christian) God during a campaign... to do otherwise would be political suicide here. Unfortunately.

Nick Clegg is an atheist. He's not militant about it, but he doesn't mince words about his beliefs.

Of course, I'm sure the deputy PM isn't a real leader in the eyes of proper Brits.

Australia is not as religious as the US. There are a lot of Agnostics and Atheists here... and for a Catholic, i'm very agnostic;)

Brits generally don't give a damn about religion, but will treat with suspicion any politician who makes a big deal about it. No one who is heard to loudly and often proclaim their heartfelt love of and faith in God would ever be elected in the UK. As such I find nothing remarkable about her being an athiest, and her gender is only remarkble in the sense that women tend not to be as entusiastic about gaining political power as men.

Religion or religious beliefs should have NOTHING to do with Politics.
Haven't you heard of "Separation of church and state"?
rlumley (0 DX)
25 Jun 10 UTC
Jesus Christ (Pun intended) "separation of church and state" talk pisses me off. There's a (vastly incorrect) idea that our nation was founded on that ideal. It wasn't. The first mention of "separation of church and state" was in some papers written by Jefferson in 1803, where he was talking about the government not interfering with religion, not the other way around.

That being said, separation of church and state is obviously a good idea, it just bothers me when people justify their arguments with catch phrases instead of actually basing them on the merits of the position. Whatever our founding fathers thought should be irrelevant. What is relevant are the pros and cons of the issue being discussed.
De Gaulle (0 DX)
25 Jun 10 UTC
Church and state should be separate, just as law and state should be- i'd hardly say that the belief of this is a catch phrase!

"Separation of church and state" was NEVER intended to remove religion from society. The *concept* is intended to prevent an official state religion - such as The Church of England. It was never intended to remove the mention of God from society. That is a very modern perversion of things...

Moving back onto the actual topic rather than this descent into religious debate...

The thing that scares me most about Gillard is the large number of women out there who are going to see a female as a PM and vote for her simply because she is FEMALE rather than looking at her policies and if she is any good to run the country. I don't care that she is female (good on her for being the first one!) but I really hope people don't start to vote for her simply because she has breasts.

One reason why I think they are going to call an early election is to retain this large number fo women voters before they can fully hear her policies and ideals. Which frankly is smart but at the same time its a dick move.
De Gaulle (0 DX)
25 Jun 10 UTC
I think she is smart and switched on and will certainly be voting for her.

Already the polls say 46% will vote for her as PM over Tony Abott, and that's within one day of becoming PM. As long as she doesn't stuff it up, she will remain in power but as an ELECTED PM by the people come the election this year.

A lot of people hate Tony Abbot (too Catholic for them). Personally, as a communist bastard, I don't see much difference between them. However, if she scraps that fucking, idiotic, shitty, screwed up piece of fucking internet filter legislation, I'll be happy.

Gillard seems to be a consensus politician, who goes out and tries to get people on her side, rather than Rudd who is (allegedly, but by everyone) more forceful in getting his way without compromise. I think that might be a constructive thing, especially regarding the super profits tax (which I think will benefit government and mining industry long term; it just makes sense to tax profits and share risk rather than tax what gets taken out of the ground without regard to profitability)

On the other hand Gillard is more left oriented than Rudd was, with some of her rhetoric a little bit unsettling (saying the Howard government's policies were a "continuation" of Keating's.. nonsense).
Apparently she'll be unwilling to move the party in that direction since some centre-left factions got her in, but if she creates a strong power base I'd be worried how far she takes it

The backdrop to all this though is the opposition; the Liberal party really have a bit of a dud for a leader at the moment in Abbot, who I just can't see getting elected against any remotely competent politician (which Gillard clearly is).
Abbot is a climate change skeptic, has lead his whole party on the basis of opposing everything the government tries to do, and he makes real gaffes constantly

To be honest I think all us Australians can do is wait and see. I will say it was a total shock; when I learned the night before that there was an internal struggle I thought Rudd could survive it and apparently so did he, but it was a landslide
De Gaulle (0 DX)
25 Jun 10 UTC
There was never a vote in the labor party Kestasjk, that's how bad the majority was. Rudd needed to save face somehow.
As happy as i am with a female PM, i am disgusted ith how it occurred, despite no blood on Gillards hands.

spyman (424 D(G))

@dexter morgan, reglious belief is pretty much as non-issue in Australian politics. We have certainly had more than one athiest Prime Minister. It so happens that both Kevin Rudd (the former PM) and Tony Abbott (the leader of the oppostion) are very religious, but you barely hear about it. Indeed if they were to talk about it too much, it could be a liability for them.
It would appear that in the USA, it would be impossible for someone to become President if they were not a declared christian, but the situation is totally different in Australia (and I dare say in many countries - just about all of Western Europe, and New Zealand. I am not sure about Canada, but it would surprise me if it were an issue there).

I was impressed with how it was handled. Rudd clearly has lost the support of his party, which isn't good, but he acknowledged this and didn't cling on to power just for his own ego like certain Scottish ministers...
largeham (149 D)
25 Jun 10 UTC
Yeah, Gordon Brown... Lol, the funny thing is that people believe that Julia Gillard is a 'confirmed Marxist', in the words of a Herald Sun reviewer, and one Age columnist claimed she was elected by a 'socialist minority that is divorced from the middle-class'.

A lot of people feel sort of betrayed, because they voted for Rudd, but then we don't vote in prime ministers, we vote in the party, who chooses the leader themselves.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Also it looks like Rudd won't feature in Gillard's cabinet, which is weird because she's talking about emphasizing stability, and that Rudd is still a friend and left with grace etc, in her decisions yet surely it'd be more stable to keep Rudd in some position of power. Not that I'm particularly bothered
sean (3490 D(B))

I think Rudd wants to be posted to the UN or maybe a a ambassador.
Gillard is an atheist and not married(partner is a male hairdresser!)
makes me proud to be an Australian:)
I felt uncomfortable with Rudd's moralizing streak(goodbye Internet filter i hope!) and Abbot for me comes off looking like a private school bully.
De Gaulle (0 DX)
28 Jun 10 UTC
Its not weird that she never named Kewvin Rudd as a cabinet minister, or gave him a portfolio.
It would have created more instability- and she did not make any new ministers- ratwer handed over her previous portfolios to 2 existing ministers.

After the August? election there will be a major shake up when they win(and remember- it will take a MASSIVE swing of around 9% to send labor out of office

How prevalent is cheating?
In anonymous live games, I find myself doubting everyone whenever I lose. But I realize that it is probably not the case that there are cheaters in nearly every game I play, but there are probably cheaters in some. So, what is the likely prevalence of cheating? My guess would be about 1 in 5 games, taking into account communicating with other players in a gunboat game or meta-gaming. Is that accurate?
