cheating
I read alot of people cheating, could someone please tell me how someone could cheat in this game. It seems improbable that could happen

Thanks tough guy
Hi Nickdad1,

Probably the most common would be creating a separate account to play in the same games. There is metagaming too "Hey. I'll throw this game for you if you help me win that one", but I think that's a grayer area.
nickdad1 (100 D)

Thank you crazy.

That isn't a gray area. The gray area with with friends etc.

At the board game there are a myriad of ways of cheating.
I like looing at the board and seeing how it would look like after different moves and "accidentally" moving one of your units forward.
It's also good to spike the opponents drinks so that they misorder ruthlessly
Or just drop one of your opponents' move sheets into your beer so that it's illegible and the moves are unclear. Always amusing.
At the internet version things are harder - basically you need a patsy. If you can persuade one of the other players to do your will reliably then you will have an enormous advantage. There are many ways of doing this that are deemed "cheating" by the fascist mods. These include
i) Creating two accounts for yourself so that you can play two powers in the same game
ii) Creating one account for yourself and another for your little brother and beat him up unless he orders the way you want him to
iii) Tricking another player into giving you their password (getting them drunk is always a good first move I find) and then logging in as them and ordering for them
iv) Bribing another player with money, chocolate or sexual favours to order according to your desires
v) Kidnapping another player's granny (or spaniel - apparently) and then agreeing to release them only if they allow you to walk into their centres
vi) The thing the Anglican said
vii) Hiding a nuclear device under the seat of government of your enemies and threatening to set it off unless they concede the game.
Personally I think it's a much better game without these unreasonable restrictions but for some reason the rules are in the hands of these wishy washy liberal types.
Good luck!

Parallelopiped +1 if just for making me laugh so hard!
The great thing about playing the board game in my parents house was setting the intercom so that you could hear everything that was said in the "negotiations room".

Oh, and nickdad, it isn't good to mouth off to a mod like figlesquidge until you've gotten to know them and they know when you are just yanking their chain and having fun. Figle's a good guy so treat him with more respect that that.

I am man enough to admit when I am wrong. I'm sorry, I thought people were talking about the rules of diplomacy. I went to the link and now I eat my humble pie. Thanks to all of you for clearing that up!

No worries, nick.

If yours were the worst offense on this site, it would be a much better place indeed : )
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Feb 10 UTC
Thanks abge - took ages to work them out! I know they're quite obvious, but we wanted to get them to a form we all agreed upon, that was as friendly as possible but could still be referenced rather more formally to say something is clearly against them.
nickdad - hehe, thats good then, its a useful attribute in a diplomacy player.
Hope you enjoy the site.

Anywho. How did you find out about this place? Do you know anyone else here? etc etc :)

06 Feb 10 UTC
Hey, Figle? About number 4 of the actual rules... You mean I have to stick with the old "Oh crap! I forgot to change that!" lie after the fact rather than saying "I'm sure I set those orders. Must have been the server or something." That's a bummer. <grin>
nickdad1 (100 D)
06 Feb 10 UTC
No. I love this game and had nobody to play with, so I did a search. Its a great site and its free, and free is my favorite flavor.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

"Lying is fine in Diplomacy except when it gives mods/admins unnecessary work to do!"

That is certainly the implication. If you have a cheating/software problem then you are free to email us and we will try to deal with it. Taking this into account, it helps make the distinction clear if nothing along those lines is allowed. Supposing you *did* blame it on the software and your "ally" (using the term loosely considering you'd clearly be stabbing them!) then emails the mods. That means we have to go look into the details and see if we can find what happened. This is an annoyingly difficult process, and has to be passed for Kestas to look into, so really does waste time.

Personally I think the main point of that rule is to point out that you cannot claim to be/accuse someone else of being a multi/meta without making it official. If you think they are then feel free to ask us, but it can't just be used to break up trust within a game.

(I know that's overkill for your question, but hopefully it covers any follow-up questions people may have)
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Feb 10 UTC
Welcome to the site, nickdad. Have you ever played on the email judges? Just wondering as some of us came from them to here. And it's good to have someone new who already knows the rules of the game, but in case your home games had variations, it is always good to reread the rules from Hasbro (current owners of the title) and maybe download a DATC compliant adjudicator like JDip to test things out.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Feb 10 UTC
I had the <grin> cause I completely understand. One thing I would say, though, is unless the person who claims their orders were screwed up reports it, Kestas and The Mods (still think that would be a cool 60s cover band name) have no obligation to investigate it. That would allow us to continue those sorts of lies without concern for them causing undue effort on the fine site management's part.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Feb 10 UTC
Well, the issue is not that you might report it, but your "ally" might...
jimgov (219 D(B))
06 Feb 10 UTC
Welcome nickdad1. There are some pretty nice people here on the site that will help you with your questions. Just ask.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Feb 10 UTC
Right, so you tell the ally you don't investigate unless the person who issued the orders requests the investigation. Like I said, you are under no obligation to investigate from a second-hand source.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Feb 10 UTC
Heck, just put it in the rules: "The mods only investigate reports of possible server errors from the person whose orders were in error."
jimgov (219 D(B))
06 Feb 10 UTC
That way you can tell your ally "I told the mods and they are looking into it." May give you a turn or two before he figures it out.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Yep! Adds another layer to the lie...

Help me choose the default variants
A poll is running on forum.webdiplomacy.net to select the default 3 variants which will run here and be included by default with webdip:
http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=463

Voting does require a forum.webdiplomacy.net account, but the poll runs for 14 days and at the end of it if enough votes have been gathered the top 3 will be added as default variants to webDip.
