Should we cancel?
two friends in this live game looks to be an unbreakable alliance (they addmited they were friends from another game (I dont know if he said on this website or another) check inside for the dets===>

Im mean I would act differently if they werent in so many games together and that he addmitted to being friends. (england and Russia by the way)

Look at the way Russia is wide open any smart England would of tookin those SC but he decided to attack me

actually i backstabbed him in that game :P
One supply center Derek at the end of the game. Great stab...

I agree with tilMltokill. You're ruining every one else's chances when you're only allying with him every single game.
tilMletokill (100 D)

yea after he was all alone and you knew you would have the win
It is meta-gaming.

I mean yes It was a great strategy derek dont get me wrong.........the Russian england alliance can go along way (kinda like turkey and Russia)....but with your friend that is what is ticking me off and then I do some undercover work and see you guys play in alot a games together and ally in almost every one (not like you guys win ) but still that is not too fair
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

DerekHarland,

I suspected meta gaming in our last live game. Not accusing you, just others who participated. There were also two CD's in that game quickly replaced by some other players.

cant just quit dave would love too ........you know what fuck it probably be a better game then this one
DerekHarland (757 D)
19 Oct 09 UTC
A meta-gamer is someone in more than one game who lets one of his games influence how he plays in another one. The classic example is threatening a stronger player in a weak game with a country in a different game where the tables are turned.
Meta-gaming is usually frowned on, but is acceptable in some cases and not seen as being as bad as multi-accounting.

Please show me how that is meta-gaming. Tbh, I understand why you guys are angry, we will try to avoid each other in the future but I don't believe this is meta-gaming.
You ally in one game. You ally in another. It's assumed that you're going to be allies in every game. There is no more fear that there will be any early-game (probably late game also) stab.

Okay let me Invite my friend in here an make you play with a bunch of random people you dont know and lets see what happens ..........and you guys dont find out we are friends until after the game
DerekHarland (757 D)
19 Oct 09 UTC
ok that would be fine with me. i will just assume you guys are allied.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

This current game has my fears justified as some of the same players in the game I played are playing in this one as well.

This type of meta-gaming is the kind that a majority of players here don't tolerate. Derek and Lan, if you don't change the way you play, you'll soon find that no one wants to play with you.

Given your responses here, you aren't confused about how adverse your behavior has become and will likely not change your meta-gaming ways until you are forced so.

Because of that, I encourage every player that does take offense to their actions, to never join a game they have joined and if they end up joining your game, push for a cancel. As I stated earlier, most players will agree to your cancel once you explain why you want it. They may be annoyed, but eventually this will force Lan and Derek to change, or even off of the site.

You can also prevent this by always being the last to join a game. I personally try to make a habit of it, though if everyone did it, no games would ever be played.

And if Derek and Lan are doing this in an anonymous game, they should immediately be banned, as that undermines the very terms of an anonymous game.
DerekHarland (757 D)
20 Oct 09 UTC
I used to think that this website was so much better than the other ones for playing the game but now I am not so sure. I will make sure Lan and I don't join the same live game again however if people won't relax.
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Oct 09 UTC
Derek, it's not that you and Lan play live games together, it's that you are drawn to ally with him because you know him.

I've played fair games with my brother and friends on this site, but you have to be careful not to discriminate your alliances based on real-life friendships. It's not so bad if you always consider them your sworn enemy, though that ruins the game just as much.

If you want to play games together and think it will be too difficult not to be biased, play only anonymous games. Just don't tell each other what country you are playing and make sure you don't leave mannerisms in your messages that he/she would recognise.
DerekHarland (757 D)
20 Oct 09 UTC
I understand what you are saying Geofram but I fear it is too late for us to play one together without everyone complaining. If you look at our games together, about half of them are us going against each other.
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Oct 09 UTC
But don't make the mistake of never allying with your friend just because you think the other players will get mad. Perhaps the best way to learn how to treat your friend as a fair ally, is to play a game or two without him and take notes of how you treated your allies, why you chose certain allies, when you stabbed if you did, when you got stabbed if you did, etc. Then apply those notes to your friend in each game until it becomes natural. If the notes don't fit, he's not a good ally!

You'll also find that these notes make you a much better diplomacy player. Mine have personally tipped me off to several stabs and I'm much better at determining what allies will take me where I want to go than I was before.
DerekHarland (757 D)
20 Oct 09 UTC
Thanks for the advice Geofram, I will take it into consideration.
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Oct 09 UTC
Derek, it is very easy to change the opinion of the masses on this website concerning yourself. All it takes is one game.

I'll play a game with you both if you'd like, and since I now believe you do want to prove that your friendship does not make you a biased diplomacy player, at the end of the game I'll come back here and let everyone know if I think you accomplished that.

The rest will be up to you and your friend though.
You guys are crazy! It is just a game! so what if he has an ally? Isn't that the whole point of the game, to make alliances and try to defeat your enemies? you should all just calm down!
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Oct 09 UTC
Karsten, I think you have the point of the game wrong. This game mirrors real world diplomacy in that True alliances are hardly ever what you should be aiming for. Especially from a WTA perspective. In a diplomacy game, you always have six enemies, the enemies that you choose to support are always for your own gain or security.
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Oct 09 UTC
When you see yourself working with an "ally" for the entirely of the game, never consider stabbing them, and wholeheartedly cheer for their acquisition of supply centres -- you are the weaker partner in the alliance. Or, you are meta-gaming, like Lan and Derek were accused of doing.
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Oct 09 UTC
entirety*
Well having an ally for the whole game, choosing to support them, is in fact for your own gain AND security.
DerekHarland (757 D)
20 Oct 09 UTC
I think we should all let it go and stop whining as Jamie at the beginning of this thread said.
Go Geofram for not stringing up the witches lol

I do have to say however that I don't miss the low pot games for this reason.

I would like to suggest this feature be added to all Anonymous games, as it would help prevent multi-accounting and the certain types of meta-gaming that might as well be.
