They have started to talk now, I think my messages finally got through :) But it seems a bit stupid to play diplomacy and not even be open to talking to other countries (or specific countries) - and when it is 3-4 players doing the same thing, we have a fairly lame game..

happened to me before, but never with every player in the game, only a few

of course, those silent guys were mercilessly eliminated by me

yea, why do they even bother to join the game if theyre going to play like that? it isnt even enjoyable. its even worse when they turn out to be metagamers...

Some people hate talking to those they are attacking... afraid they will open the doors to sympathy and stop the attack.
I, for one, welcome it. Some of the best alliance mates are those you almost destroyed (or almost destroyed you). They just want to survive, and if you let them, they can really help you... and you can put troops on the borders for 'paranoia' reasons, and they won't be offended. ;)

In one of my current games (no names mentioned to save the embarrassment of the individual) I wrote a lengthy paragraph to a neighboring country to which the reply was "uh"

I don't take it too personally.

I'm a little verbose (as some may have noticed from my brief time in these forums), so I'm used to getting replies that are unsatisfyingly short.. It happens in my professional life. It has happened in my love life. And it happens in Diplomacy. :)

However, I've found that saying *alot* earns me some credit.. because I can spin my wheels and say everything I'm thinking, and I can be honest about it all (earning me some trust turns/years later).. And it's all with minimal risk because I'm still a bit careful, and because most people seem to be overwhelmed by the amount of press I share so they can't decide which parts of it may be lies or manipulative subterfuge.

Let's call it the "Girlie Rule". As a corollary to this rule, we must also talk about a minimum of "one" of our feelings.

It's not a sewing circle, people. It's a game. I have been called out for uncommunicative play by some people. This is because I communicate extensively with some Great Powers, less extensively with some, and not at all with some. I do not blather on with every player in every game, nor do I feel the need. The hilarious part for me, I suppose, is that those who feel the opposite are those who build the biggest soapboxes and have the loudest(and most annoying IMHO) megaphones.

"Why won't everybody text me? Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I'm hurt. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Pay attention to me!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I'm INTERESTING!!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah"

These people cannot conceive of the possibility that I am(sometimes) communicating with everybody EXCEPT THEM.

FYI. My favourite colour is nobody's frigging business. I represent sovereign Great Powers. Lives are at stake. I do not care about your 14 cats. I do care about whether or not we can agree on the DMZ.

i think its annoying when you send 2 questions or propositions and the other one doesnt even care to say yes or no
the good think its that you dont send a third one, just troops against him lol

some people open a thread on the forum and complain about the "multis".

@mapleleaf - why is it girlie? i'm pretty sure most of the players that you are having that experience are dudes (tho maybe they're not the tough rugged canadian dude that you obviously are =P) so it's actually "manly" behavior.

and just as your silence is a diplomatic tool, so is some people's blather. don't knock it just b/c it doesn't work for you!

@djbent - What I am knocking is not the insipid chatter. What I am knocking is the insistence of it's purveyors that people who do not engage in it are not playing the game "properly".

For example, "What's the weather like in your city right now?" is not a question that I need to entertain at the negotiating table.

Some people are just needy, I guess.

I never got into that kind of personal banter, but I'd welcome it with open arms. Should I approach someone with "Whats the weather like over there?" And recieve a comment to the effect of: "Screw you!" Or something you seem to be implying as your usual response, I'd be more likely to attack.

hence my contentious dip-relationship with mapleleaf ;P

well, since you asked maple, it just started raining, i'm stuck late at the office and i guess i won't be biking home. and i don't have an umbrella. dammit!!

@Onar - Except for canute(banned multi), I cannot recall degenerating into the "Screw you" response genre. I think that I answered the weather question, when it was posed. Further to the point, I do not have usual responses.
