Techno
I've been out of the techno world for many years now and I have been itching to hear some of the latest good stuff. I don't know how the terms have changed from when I listened to it but generally I'm an ambiance and progressive trance lover. My favorite from back in the day was Aphex Twin and I had good times with DJ Tiesto's Sunrise series, preferably 2 towards the end of my techno culture.

"School of War" Game II
thought it best to start a new thread. please reply to confirm participation (if already named) and/or to show interest.

this is a WTA game with 40 hour phases and 5 point buy in; the goal of the game is to improve the skills of players, particularly newer ones, with in-game advice and commentary on the game from non-players.

Suggestion for Update
Why don't you allow the original make phase to be different from the length of the phases in the game? This would essentially allow a longer time for people joining shorter games.

Seems simple enough to code, and it would certainly come in useful for the "less desirable" mods, or high point games.

Quite hypocritically, I'm going to ask a question about rules
This is hypocritical because I normally suggest to people to download jDip to adjudicate moves, but it won't let me enter this as a valid order, because it isn't. That being said, this site will allow you to finalize like this, I've tested it.

What happens if you order two builds in the same spot? What if its two armies? An army and a fleet?

School of War II - Take Two
Well, it appears we lost the original School of War 2 thread. This is a pity, but we have to do what we can with what we have. Kestas, is it feasable to increase the number of active threads (ie: change the cutoff from 50 to 75)?

Again, interesting moves, but things have become a little clearer

Turkey - Signs of an alliance with Italy, so a build looks likely, and there may well be further opportunities as the board resolves. An interesting little shuffle of units - something similar may be needed this Fall to make sure that the right centre is free for the right unit for your next moves. An active ally, and what looks like a NAP with a neighbour under pressure - is slow but steady going to be enough? If you can work with both neighbours and still grow, why not? it makes complete sense to me.

Russia - Did you forget to give Warsaw an order? That unit had to swing to one of the fronts - either to help shore up your northern flank (where either Swe goes to someone else, St P falls, or both), or head south to help you get some of Austria (which probably won't happen now), or even into Germany to threaten Berlin. At this stage of the game passive defence is not the way to go. At least Turkey hasn't moved on you.

Italy - Good - you have an ally, although Italy/Turkey is an uneasy alliance due to the long term limits it puts on Turkey. Bad news - france has pacthed things up with England, and has stuck a fleet in your rear. If he builds F Mar, things could get very tricky, very fast. Also, you now have to pull a fleet back to defend Tunis/TYR. I'm not at all sure what the shuffle down south was meant to achieve. Still, you should pick up another centre in the Fall, so not all bad.

Germany - working well with England, and going for the bold two front war strategy. It's going to take two years for the other French army to come into play, but if he builds A Mar then things could get tricky. Ensuring another build is critical this turn, otherwise you could start to look enticing.

France - a good turn. The English fleet is out of your way, a build is assured, the Germans have been repulsed, and the fleet move was nice, and gives you options. As long as the current alliances hold your position has significantly improved.

England - not a bad turn. F Bel is a little exposed (but holdable), but you'll get St P next year (if not this). Once you've completed the war against Russia, there is a choice, and a key decison to be made. Right now you have complete mastery of the northern seas - you need to make sure it stays that way.

Austria - sorry. No-one wants to help, and the destruction of the Greek army seals your fate. You'll limp on for a year, but it's been a short and brutal campaign.

Right now, I think I'd rather be England followed by Italy, and least like to be Russia (excepting the poor Austrians of course). France, Turkey & Germany have potential.

I love that England managed to sneak into Bel. That speaks of good diplomacy to me.

France smells and overextended Italy, with English support.

England has Germany AND France on board which must be good.

Good diplomacy by Turkey to get Italy onside.

Austria gone!?

Chrispminis (916 D)

I'm going camping so this will be my last commentary until Friday. Very exciting phase. I wish I hadn't lost my first draft.

England- Quite a talented new player. With France and Germany going at it he has the third party leverage, and he sneaks into Belgium. He's got an anti-Russian arrangement with Germany, who signals his willingness by not challenging English ownership of Belgium. He will no doubt keep Belgium. England should be wary of Germany because his two fleets will soon feel obsolete if they aren't turned against England. Any more fleets would be nothing short of a declaration of war. That said, I'm impressed that England has maintained peace with his neighbours up until now, having chosen Russia as his target.

France- Trusts England apparently. This trust could be misplaced as clearly England and Germany have something going on. His fleet move to the Mediterranean indicates he might want to take Italy down a notch or at least get some involvement in the other hemisphere. I have a feeling that Austria might have been behind this move because I don't see the benefit of this move for France. It's not an effective attack on Italy because only Austria is an ally, and it's only one unit. I'm not a fan of France's moves, and his earlier mistakes are still costing him as A-Por has completely lost momentum and will take a long time before getting into play. France is quite forgiving to mistakes as far as countries go, so it's not so bad.

Germany- Has an alliance with England against Russia. Will get a build from Sweden, short of complete betrayal, as Russia is unlikely to sacrifice StP just to bounce him out. His two fleets will soon be useless unless turned against England so there might be friction in a year. I can't help but think a land assault on Russia would have been more effective, and I think Germany knows this but is being more reserved.

Russia- Well her DJ senses let her save StP temporarily. Though England's build in Edi, the army in Norway, and press should have tipped her off to this. She lends a helping hand to the division of Austria and will no doubt be expecting to be repaid by getting help into Budapest. I don't like the hold in Warsaw considering the advantages in moves to Livonia, Galicia, or Silesia, but then I was looking for a build in StP.

Turkey- Currently aligned with Italy and Russia, but this can't last for much longer as Austria will soon be gone. I don't like the army move to Smyrna at all. It's too friendly in it's impotence. I would have preferred to see it go to Bulgaria where it's useful. Even if he was convinced a Lepanto is coming, he probably has a build on the way, and fleets not too far. This move is really just a crowd pleaser because everyone can see how useless it is. He shouldn't rely on Italy or Russia's benevolence with such gestures. Especially with two fleets, he very much represents a threat to Italy. Turkey will have to align himself with either Italy or Russia soon so as to not be the odd-man out since I-R is the logical diagonal alliance.

Austria- It's a shame that our vet is out so early, but such is the curse of Austria. At the slightest sniff of weakness, in this case Italy's stab, Austria is divided quickly. He really got the short end if it was a spontaneous stab on Italy's part. I have no doubt that he would be more of a force if Italy had gone through with the Key. I have to say, I'm critical of his latest orders because I think a concerted attack on Serbia with cut support on Trieste would have been more effective. It wouldn't have made a difference because of Russia's support cutting, but I feel like taking Serbia would have been more prudent. It leaves Greece open, but it concentrates his forces and gives him some good anti-Italian momentum and a better position to take Trieste with the forced disband (unless Turkey went to Greece and Serbia retreated to Bul). It wouldn't have made a difference, but I think that before the orders came in, they would have been a better set of orders.

Italy- Good job! You got both Russia and Turkey to help you out. However, his build prospects don't look that great. I have a feeling he is supposed to support Russia into Budapest. If he think he has something solid with Turkey, it might be a good idea to take it instead. France is coming down, I'm interested to see how Italy deals with that. I'm not sure what he's trying to do with that little shuffle he's doing on the end of the Italian boot. If he doesn't get a build, occupying Naples won't be a big deal, but it's generally good to keep Naples open for builds. Is he looking to set up for a convoy? A Lepanto manoeuvre is a possibility if he can get peace with France, but inadvisable as an Autumn move if Turkey gets a build.

For reference, a Lepanto manoeuvre would consist of Ionian to Eastern Med, Apulia to Ionian, and likely Naples to Apulia. Then it would involve trying to sneak a convoy to Syria from Apulia. Devastating when successful.

I hope my post is grammatically consistent because I found myself switching between second and third person a lot, and while I corrected to third person, there might be some relics.

I'm sure we could. The first SoW game hasn't finished yet, so we don't have a precedent. EoG's should wait until the end of the game, and not when you're eliminated though.
Pete U (293 D)

While we wait for the Austrian disband, a thoughts on what we are likely see in the Autumn. I'm expecting some fairly conventional moves, but I can see some bold options for most countries

England - will focus on completing the end run to Barents, in order to get St P next year. The other units I expect to be fairly neutral, although there are some interesting possibilities out there.

France - will almost certainly but heads with germany in Burgundy again, and Por will hold. W Med has a choice - either head for Tunis (for a centre try) or into Tyr (for the chaos of a fleet off the Italian coast). Both have merit

Germany - given the board, an attempt on Sweden is going to happen. It can be guaranteed with the right support. In the west, denying Bur to France may be more important than taking it yourself. Again, there are other possibilities, depending on how bold you feel.

Russia - In the north, realsitically, you have to choose which of Sweden and St P you give up on, although I'm sure your bsuy diploming to change that. I think I know which you'll choose. In the south, you will need Italian support if Budapest is your goal, although I bet you wish you had moved War-Gal in the spring.

Turkey - Hmm. Not entirely sure what's going to happen here. The main thing is to 1 - hold what you have, and 2 - be in position to move onwards next turn.

Italy - In the west, you have a guess with France (or a deal to do). In the east - I'm sure you had a plan with your shuffle - let's see what happens. Also, where next?

Austria - All you can do is hope you can convince someone that they are better working with you than agaisnt you. Until then, your units are just going to work in isolation ad get picked off. That is cruel - a slow lingering death is no fun

Speculation:

I'd suspect that England will hold the 5 builds unless very confident.

France will make friends with Italy and move north.

Italy will consolidate and defend builds but not trust France with Tunis.

Austria will be in trouble!

Turkey will move to Bulgaria, hold Greece and move on Armenia.

Russia will support Rumania and do a deal with England.

Germany will keep with the deal with England against Russia.

(Kinda makes England in a good position.)
