Israel defines themselves by race/religion, mostly because of what the Nazis did to them. That is why they act like the Nazis.
I personally feel that all middle eastern countries have issues, but we don't notice because:
a) They don't threaten us in the way Germany did.
b) We are "allied" to one or more of the despots.
c)We are afraid that if we do take a stand they could claim we are "racist".

I just don't follow that logic. When a people (Ashkenazic Jewry) has been systematically slaughtered in every nation in eastern Europe because of their race (or religion if you wish to qualify it that way) for centuries upon centuries and gets a chance to establish a homeland and is immediately invaded by the armed forces of 7 nations of yet another race/religion (and I am not saying the Arabs weren't justified), why would you have the expectation that they could treat all races equal and survive? Why would you not expect them to see enemies everywhere?

Can people not bandy around terms like 'fascist' and 'Imperialistic'. Especially when they're being vastly incorrectly applied. Fascism is a very specific form of political ideology that is no more inherently better or worse than any other system of political organisation. The Israeli state fits no definition of Fascism I've seen in any case, and I've studied both Israel and Fascism. My intention here is not to talk about Israel and the Middle East, I just hate it when people use such important words without thought.

I know Liberal Jews who want peace and who support equality and civil rights with as much passion as anyone I have ever met.

And I know Conservative Jews who believe that Israel's security is of paramount importance and overwhelms any discussion of civil rights.

All I know is that radicals on all sides continue to foment discord because it advances their own agendas - Jews, Arabs, Muslims and dogmatic Christians who believe that war in the middle east will bring the second coming of Christ and therefore support the most radical elements of Israel.

I hate to sound like a Obamaniac, but his approach to International relations is already having some impact in Pakistan - Pakistanis have paused in their hatred of America long enough to look around and see the danger from within, and are starting to do something about it. Baby steps, but I hope that an America that looks to find common ground will change the conversation, in the same but opposite way that an America that looked to expand conflict radicalized the people.

Israel is not a religious state. Officially, It is a secular state. The United States is, officially, a secular state - the first - by constitution.

However, we can see the influence that religion has on even secular states.

Caution should not allow me to get into this thread too deeply. However, Israel's policies, historically, resemble the Nazi policy of lebensraum. Germany's plans called for the forced relocation of Slavs (Poles, Ukrainians, and Russians) from their countries to wherever (limited reservations) to make room for colonization by Germans.

That being said, Israel's actions against the Palestinians can not be compared to the final solution against the Jews in any way. So, by degrees the Israelis are not nearly as bad as the Germans (Europeans really, since the Germans had so many willing helpers across their conquered lands in stoking the ovens.)

Actually, the Germans, and the South Africans for that matter, modeled their plans after the American practice of placing Indigenous people into reservations and clearing the way for white expansion.

These actions, some historical, some current events should not be condoned, They should be resisted. Indeed, taking land for the purpose of resettlement and colonization is an international illegal act. This is what is happening in Tibet as well.

It is hard to selectively condemn without condoning it everywhere.

We started the first proper imperialistic empire causing misery across 1/4 of the world.
We invented the concentration camp, in Africa.
We were half responsible for the reprehensible treaty of Versailles, the most important facilitator of the Nazis.
We played as bad a part in the Iraq war as the Americans for even more fallacious reasons.

Once every country can do this Patriotism and the consequent xenophobia will end.

I wasn't addressing your point Clark. I was bringing up my own new shiny point. A rather pointy point. And my point was not about "the Jews of Europe" but was about "Israelis". At any rate, my point was silly and not serious, mostly. Also, neither "nationality" nor "Yiddish" were germane to my point. Rather than the "German nationality", I was referring to the "German culture" which is another way of saying the "Western post-Enlightenment culture".
