Don't you hate it when...
You masterfully played the game. Now for the epic climax just 3 more SCs, your ally believes everything you said the sucker. You plan a perfect stab and...the next phase is 3 days from now.

A game question
May a player put himself into CD (with I suppose /cd) and then take up another available (and better) position in the game as a different country?

Suppose in a game, you have four sc and a player who has eight sc drops. Can you put your country into CD, drop from the game and then take the other country’s position. Is this legal, is this poor game play, is this cheating?

DIP-3 game paused please!!

please moderators, pause the game!! the russian must be in CD and the turkish player is taking an advantage that adulterate the game. I dont mind in fighthing two countries, but one of them did not play and the other is using it for his own benefit that distort the normal gaming

Hello! Sorry to anyone else, I'm not after you.
Mahatma, could you drop me a line - I tried your email but didn't get a response.
Before anyone jumps to conclusions, its NOT anything wrong, just trying to ask him a question about one of the games he's in.

Is the "draw" strategy valid?
Some players play to win, others play to gain points. Until recently, I thought of those as WTA and PPSC. In my most recent game, I came across a player that used a "I don't go for wins, I go for draws" strategy. I found myself handcuffed by my history of playing for wins.

The Switcherino
A new Italiano/Austirano Openingo
xcurlyxfries (0 DX)
24 Feb 09 UTC
The switcherino or the whoopsiedoodle is a ploy just thought up by my crazy mind, if it already has a name and what not that fine Idc just post it.

But this is a VERY risky gambit but can make italy and autria the 2 strongest powers in the game and it has very little risk.

The first and foremost move in this gambit, is the switching of powers in Venice and Triest. Austria's opening moves should be Tri- ADR Vie-Tyro buda-tri and Italy should set up for a normal Naples - Tunis Convoy.

This will make it seem as if Austira is about to try and obliterate Italy... Quite the contrary. During this time, Austria should have talked to france, germany, and turkey about possible alliances (fake of course) and Italy should have talked to Russia and turkey about alliances (fake of course)

Austria's main concern is to not be flanked. so by making sure you get everyone facing off vrs each other is key. Italy needs to help with this by saying he has ties withother countries tha can help him take austria and to not flank them.

The next move is the game winner. Austria moves Tyro-Mun ADR-Venice Tr-i-Serb

and Italy Ven-Tri- Naple-Apulia and Ion-tunis

Giving austria 2 builds, and Italy one, and what seems like a enemy. But really a super close alliance with about 0 stabbing possibilities. Italy could talk to turkey, but austria should have his fake alliance there, Italy could talk to russia, but agian austria you need to communicate. France is also with asutria as he attacked germany and italy (perfect french ally) so stabbing really is a no no. After that, its up to you but a 2 build start for austria and a solid alliance. What more do you need?

I would suggest even a blue water lepanto from Trieste and then switch back to original home SC's after that.
xcurlyxfries (0 DX)
24 Feb 09 UTC
What makes this even better, is by the time france realizes you duped him and are allies with italy, hes alreayd attacking germany, and germany can't attack you because hes fighting france. And for russia its too late aswell since you have 2 spankin neww armies in budapest and vienna.

Then the blue water lepanto to take out turkey +the serbian army...

tut tut tut GG

Curly, I believe you will want to read up on the "Blue Water Lepanto" openings for Italy and Austria. They have ideas you can use. Also, these articles might help.

Yes, whilst a good idea, I expect you'll find it hard to get a 1901 Austria to walk away from the chance of taking your SCs without even a fight!
xcurlyxfries (0 DX)
24 Feb 09 UTC
True, but if the austria does screw italy by moving to Venice and serb and not munich, Italy can easily persuade russia to attack since , " his other ally backed out on him" and with Asutria still practically wide open. It wouldn't be worth it to austria to betray you at that point.
Akroma (967 D)

there is so much that can go wrong when russia moves to galicia

unless turkey opens into armenia I probably wouldn't have the nerve for that opening

Always fun to try on a 5 point game :P

Italy and austria both have alot of negotiations on the turkish and russian side

"But this is a VERY risky gambit but can make italy and autria the 2 strongest powers in the game and it has very little risk."

o.O

I suppose it's not impossible to pull off... but it seems like it requires extremely specific circumstances. See if it works empirically. =)

Another big problem is that an I-A alliance is easily stalemated. The Straits of Gibraltar are easily locked up, and Austria has no northern fleets and can be easily stopped at Bur-Ruhr-Kiel, and at StP.
Onar (131 D)
24 Feb 09 UTC
That's not a bad idea for an opener as Austria. But I don't like the russian border to be so open. I prefer the mad-grab for the balkans as a strategy.

"Another big problem is that an I-A alliance is easily stalemated. The Straits of Gibraltar are easily locked up, and Austria has no northern fleets and can be easily stopped at Bur-Ruhr-Kiel, and at StP."

true, I suppose the best idea then is to make alliances with england so that once in fighting between france+germany and russia ebb down you still have an ally who can break the lines
xcurlyxfries (0 DX)
24 Feb 09 UTC
LOL I just got it chris :P

It's risky in that it take alot of luck but not risky if you get past the first year.
Onar (131 D)

Any southern power does well to ally with England, though. Personally, I like a good Italy-England alliance.
MajorTom (4417 D)

The biggest problem is that gaining and engaging an enemy early on, even if it is a feint, tends to make you a very appealing target to your neighboors who have every reason to believe they can sweep in from behind and take advantage of a weakened and commited enemy.

Thus the most likely outcome would be that Russia/Turkey would jump on Austria who looks like he's running in the other direction (very likely), and France would prepare to strike at Italy who's going to have to be defending from Austria (somewhat less likely and more situational).

The comic irony would be that these intentions would be broadcast in the form of offers of aid to Italy and Austria by the respective further powers who would be happy to encourage and profit from a fight. Then what? Would you realistically turn down an offer to quell your 'greatest enemy?' haha
Onar (131 D)
24 Feb 09 UTC
I don't see why you couldn't publicly claim them not to be your enemy.
MajorTom (4417 D)
24 Feb 09 UTC
"if the austria does screw italy by moving to Venice and serb and not munich, Italy can easily persuade russia to attack since"

the thing is, no one would have to pursuade russia and turkey to attack, they would be happy to on their own

Alright alright alright... next time I think up a new opener I won't tell you :P

Why are all the good ones already created xD

I came up with a good russian opener, but I don't know if it's already been done.
Centurian (3257 D)
24 Feb 09 UTC
I think the real problem is if Turkey moves Bulgaria to Serbia the entire ploy is ruined. Nevermind a munich covering, galicia opening or either Italy or Austria not trusting eachother.

Why do you want to switch Trieste and Venice? Is there some sort of benefit to this?
wooooo (926 D)
24 Feb 09 UTC
I have a variation.
Spring
Austria: Vienna-Tyrolia, Trieste-Adr, Bud-Serb
Italy: Venice-Trieste, Rome-Venice, Naples-Ionian
Fall
Ausria: Tyrolia-Pied, Adr-Venice Bud-Hold
Italy: Venice-Trieste, Trieste-Vienna Naples-Greece

Austria doesn't gain and Italy gets 2. If Italy gets Greece it is also promised Tunis next year. I don't know what this trade would do except be completely retarded. Maybe in the following year Ausria could take Naples and Rome and Italy can take Budapest and then neither can build units for the rest of the game.

Interesting ... and what happens if RUS moves in GAL first turn?
An AUS-IT alliance has a 90+% chance to give RUM + VIE/BUD to Russia and BUL + GRE to Turkey?

Can you try this when I'm RUS or TUR in your game please :)

If I ever get to play agame with you :P

It seems like it has alot less risk for italy then austria, but that's austria anyway xD

Old bugs with the game, haven't played this for a while
There were a couple problems with the phpdip adjudicator that went against the rules, I'm trying to remember what they were. There was something with convoying, and being able to dislodge yourself. I haven't played for over a year I think, could someone tell me the status of these bugs? Have they been fixed?
