What does Bhm. Sea stand for in the modern map version?
In the modern map, there's a territory named Bhm. Sea. What does that stand for? I always assumed Bohemian Sea though that doesn't exist (and the sea isn't close to Bohemia). Perhaps it is Bornholm Sea (after the Danish island in the Baltic in that area)?

When Is The New Forum Going Live?
I had a quick look at the forum a while ago. It looked good to me. Any idea when it may go live? On a completely unrelated note - any chance we may turn SSL on for the site?

Identification Methods
For a story I'm writing, I need an adult who has lost his memory to not be easily identifiable. How do I make this feasible?
For instance, I expect the Dutch government to have the fingerprints of Dutch citizens. Do legal immigrants or people with a refugee status have their fingerprints taken as well? Would illegal immigrants or tourists from countries that don't take fingerprints make for a solid storyline? Are there other options?

Hang on.... Why would the Dutch government have his fingerprints?

Last time I checked, no government have introduced universal biometrics yet. Sadly.

fingers burned grabbing something hot, no more fingerprints. Aliens invaded the earth, destroyed computers, and then left.

Either one seems equally likely, so take your pick.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

I have burnt my fingers at work many times without managing to burn the prints off. I really struggle to imagine how someone could do that accidentally.

Also fingerprint databases are pretty crap compared to DNA nowadays. If you want an example of something like this in real life though, there's always https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas_Grassl

If someone has worked with pineapples for an extended period of time, their fingerprints can be partially or entirely destroyed.

Maybe s/he had their hands cut off in an industrial accident and lost all their teeth because they never brushed so you can make the character regretful that they never brushed their teeth so kids will get the message and brush more often.
Randomizer (722 D)

The was a bank robbery case where a print at the crime scene matched one in the driver's license data base. However the guy had a well documented industrial accident at work between the time he got his license and the robbery. He proved he couldn't have left an undamaged thumb print.

There are lots of ways to alter finger prints and other biometrics that are commonly used like facial recognition. That's if they were ever entered into a database.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

Well you could give your character a history that included some event that caused his DNA to be sampled, eg he was in a "suspect group" for a serious offense..murder and his DNA was sampled and that ruled him out of being a suspect, and although the Police said they would destroy DNA samples and test results for those found to be innocent.. Guess what...they didn't and the information was still there & conveniently available
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

Or they did destroy it

Of course if they signed up on Facebook, then they cannot escape being identified from all those selfies they posted

You can make up a privacy law in the story that makes the sharing of fingerprint databases by government agencies illegal in your society.

Make sure it's something plausible. The sort of thing that could happen to anyone on any given day. Say your chap was walking through the woods when he sees a dog disappear down a badger hole. He dives into the hole to rescue the dog but gets stuck, and his finger prints are destroyed by the persistent licking of a curious badger.
ksako8 (1433 D)

The Netherlands government only takes fingerprints of suspects or to rule out suspects. Same with DNA. They don't have mine.
The US government does have mine, since you need to provide them when entering the US.
ksako8 (1433 D)
10 Nov 17 UTC
Immigrants into NL nor visitors have to provide them.
In the U.S., you only get fingerprinted if you get arrested, try to get some sort of security clearance, or apply for a job that requires a thorough background check like being a nurse. The only reason the government , including the police, would have your DNA is if you'd been convicted of a crime or had to provide DNA to exonerate yourself from one.

It would be quite feasible for a hospital or the police to be unable to identify someone who didn't have a criminal record.

That being said, depending on the level of realism in your story be careful with the whole amnesia trope. Real amnesia is nothing like it is usually portrayed in books and movies.

You mean Bourne Identity isn't a true story?
PRINCE WILLIAM (391 D)

In Greece, we all have our fingerprints taken when we issue IDs but the databases have those who have a criminal record.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
11 Nov 17 UTC
Yeah Dutch citizens have their fingerprints taken when they get a new ID, but that's a recent change so I suppose the protagonist could either not have gotten a new ID since that law was introduced or he could come from a country such as the US.

@Literary Pugilist: I will do some research, but if you could elaborate that would be appreciated as well.
Most people who have significant head trauma that causes them to loose memory, loose other cognitive function as well. No one forgets who they were, but remembers all their skills —no Bourne Identity :) And if they forgot things like their name and where they're from, they probably wouldn't know what year it was or who won the World Series last year. They may not even remember how to brush their teeth.

If you're writing in a genre where realism sort of takes a back seat (like spy thrillers) then you can fudge a little on the whole amnesia thing and it might be considered just part of the genre— fantasy and sci-fi have this kind of stuff all the time. But if you're doing literary fiction or something that's supposed to seem "real" then forgetting who you are without forgetting most everything else is kind of out.

What about using identical twins ? Where one is "hidden"from authorities etc from birth ? So you have two individuals " sharing" one recorded identity & if one dies and authorities record that death, then you have an individual whose recorded existence is a bit of a grey area.
Or you could manufacture other reasons why a baby is not registered.eg.the child is a product of incest ? Or at least the product of a union that cannot be publicly acknowledged ?

Known World 901 - Playable?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm fairly new around here. I'm looking through the variant maps, and I see one that looks like a lot of fun, the Known World 901 map. On the Variants page, it lists it as active, but when I go to create a new game I don't see it as an option to select.

An open discussion about elaborate ways to restore reliability rating
I was thinking how there are members on this site who ruined their Reliability early and can never restore it to the 90th %tile. What if we did a series of experiments on these people. Hook them up to machines. Or perhaps put them in a room full of rats and see if they survive. The goal being we develop a way that someone could go from a 13% RR to a mighty 78%
