On punching nazis
I've decided to appease the centrists. Instead of punching nazis, we'll murder them by drone with no due process.

The new forum system is up and running, and we're ready to let users onto it to test it as we transition to it from this forum.

Probably best if you respond there rather than here, but I guess it doesn't matter:

Nazi march in America?
Someone with the Twitter handle @JuliusGoat just dropped one of the best Twitter threads in history, about the white supremacist/Nazi march in Charlottesville.

Why couldn't I move?
Hey I was playing Italy in this game. I tried to have my fleet convoy my army in Tuscany to Smyrna. Neither were being attacked or blocked, but I was unable to make this move. Why? Here's the link to the map: http://webdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=203295&turn=9&mapType=large

WWI year-by-year re-enactment game
Would anyone be interested in this? To be clear, I mean instead of playing, we figure out a blow-by-blow of WWI and then re-enact it phase by phase.

I guess the point would be to get a feel for the strategic ebb and flow of the war. It'd be a kind of performance, more than a game, with players acting out the part of the nation they were assigned.

The inspiration came from watching 'The Great War' on youtube, which covers the events of the war, week-by-week, as they happened 100 years ago (great channel by the way, highly recommended. Here's their latest episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jGS4VoCrDU).

The biggest obstacle will be the notable absence of colonial forces and US forces, but I supposed these could just be explained as contributing factors to British and French victories as displayed on the board. The biggest task would be figuring out how to represent the events of the war as Diplomacy builds and moves.

Seems interesting, but why not do it on vdip where there are variants for that.
Arch-Duke (100 D)
03 Aug 17 UTC
Sorry, can you explain what the story is with vdip? I'm new here. That site has a bunch of variants (couldn't find a WWI variant, though), and has a similar design, look and feel, and uses the same FAQ as this one (which refers to itself as webDiplomacy).
Arch-Duke (100 D)
03 Aug 17 UTC
Oh found the subsection of the FAQ dealing with vdip, cheers. Seems really strange that there's not a WWI variant, though: http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php
Probably because vanilla dip is supposed to be just that...

I actually miss read the name of the thread and thought you said WWII. For WWI the classic map would do, but they do have a variant called USA (http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=56)
which includes the USA in the original map, I think that would be interesting.

I am very interested count me in. We need o do some research first dont we. Should we have a google doc to lay out the moves?
dargorygel (2684 DMod(G))

This sounds like an interesting (if not over-filled with the thrill and excitement of that 'stab moment' in a dip game) idea. I would be interested in taking part.

I will certainly be watching this.
Arch-Duke (100 D)

Good to see there's interest. Still very surprised there's not a WWI-specific variant map.

I'd disagree that vanilla dip is WWI - apart from the fact that it excludes America and the British colonies, there's also the omission of the entire Middle Eastern theatre. Vanilla dip is more of a classic pre-WWI general European war that everyone thought WWI was going to be.

Anyhow, I suppose that's the first question: do we play classic here, or use the USA variant at vDip (http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=56)?

So far we've got the following interested players:

Arch-Duke
michael_b
dargorygel

I think michael_b has the right idea; once we've got a map settled, and players, we should collectively plan out the progress of the war in a shared google spreadsheet to try and represent as much as we can within the constraints of the game. I think also that the public shared chatbox should be IC. Not exactly scripted, but key announcements could be planned (e.g. Americans denouncing the Zimmerman telegram in the spring of 1917). We can add a column for it in the shared doc.

No offense but I find that variant sort of ugly with the square usa. Cmon lets put some effort. It also doesnt have a middle eastern front..
Arch-Duke (100 D)
04 Aug 17 UTC
Yeah I agree. Also, everything between Syria and the pacific as one square called 'asia'? Just had a look at some of the finished games on that map, and you have stuff like the Ottomans conquering San Francisco. Our game is planned, but still, the map offends my sensibilities a bit. Also, Canada as a neutral territory? Would have been better to just exclude them like the rest of the British colonies.

I also vote we just do it here, and mention American and Commonwealth involvement in the chatbox, represented as French and British victories on the board. Similarly, developments in Mesopotamia can be mentioned in the chatbox.

yeah but that's the whole world
does we really want whole world planned
that would take long thyme
Arch-Duke (100 D)

What do you mean "profit for allies" Oztra?

Cool that you found a Global WWI map, but I'm not sure it's definitely the way to go - that map has 14 players, including countries like Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and others. Definitely a great map for a WWI scenario game (e.g. what if Mexico allied with Germany in WWI), but maybe more than we need for just a re-enactment.

VDIP Variants and problems:

variantID=59
only needs 10 people
has many unnecessary powers
no usa

variantID=96
needs 14 people
has many unnecessary powers
has usa

variantID=56
only needs 8 people
usa image sloppy
unrealistic asian front and no middle east

variantID=81
just way to big

variantID=34
no usa

So far my favourite option is playing classic, here, and annotating events that model can't represent in the chatbox. So it'd basically be a re-enactment of the European theatre of the war, sans a separate colour for late-war American support.
TiconderogaHB (100 D)

I'd be down for participating. If we are playing this as a reenactment or 'performance' then one thing to be figured out would be getting Germany up to strength to fight a two front war, and arming and mobilizing neutrals as they entered the war.

For the classic map we could have Russia taking Rumania and Serbia to represent their armies and Turkey taking representing Bulgaria's armies. Britain could take Portugal when they enter the war. Germany could take Sweden since Sweden was largely sympathetic to Germany and maybe Holland as well to give them 5 units.

Alternatively theres a couple maps on vdip not yet mentioned that may work better.

variantID=67 Abstraction III
7 players
all powers have 4 starting units (russia 5) not just the ones that had that strength
North Africa but no usa

variantID=14 Classic Crowded
needs 11 players
Germany could start with 4 centers maybe 5 from Sweden
Armed Neutrality from neutrals, neutrals could add public press
No usa or africa
Arch-Duke (100 D)
13 Aug 17 UTC
Ok wow, that Abstraction III one is perfect with how it includes Mesopotamia.
