Exxon fined for violating Russia sanctions
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-exxon-mobil-usa-ukraine-idUSKBN1A51UH

The Department of the Treasury just fined Exxon $2 million (that's right, million with an "M") for violating sanctions related to Russia's involvement in Ukraine. Why should Russia care about lifting sanctions if toothless enforcement is the alternative?

[STRATEGY] Ancient Med Variant
Hello everyone. I love the idea of the 5 player variant. But searching online I am unable to find strategy guides for EACH individual nation. It also seems Carthage has a good advantage over the others. Also Rome is just as bad as Italy in classic. Anyone have input?

Do Republicans think that Russia is good or bad?
There seems to be debate on the right about whether Russia is to be trusted or not. (The left is uniformly suspicious of Russia). I'm seeing Republican lawmakers being skeptical about Russia, but rightwing media seems fine with them.

End Russia Sanctions Now?
Tillerson has already said wrt the election meddling that it is time to move forward. Why not go all out and just get rid of sanctions altogether? At the least, couldn't Trump just turn a blind eye to violations of the sanctions (Magnitsky Act) and return the 2 spy compounds? Who's gonna stop him?

If you think there is no diplomacy in gunboat, then you probably suck at gunboat.

I mean, I feel the diplomacy board was made to accurately represent the strength of Austria Hungary during WWI
:) You have a point there, Vashta.

But it certainly does not represent the actual strength of Germany in WWI. So that line of reasoning doesn't make any sense.
I guess that thats pretty true, but if Germany would be even stronger, it would really make a game worse. I find Germany to be the strongest power on the map, Ive lost only twice when I played it.

I'll admit I need to work on my diplomacy in GB..

The Italian-Austria alliance is win-win and a war between them (at the beginning) means their mutual end. Austria has to check that Italy is aware of that.

If so, a war between Turkey and Russia is a good step towards Victory even more if England attaks Russia and Italy just locks Turkey's expansion in Med.

@Nikola Maric Eto, I was speaking specifically about historical accuracy. But I agree Germany is already powerful enough and making it more powerful would mess up the game balance.
Agree.
orathaic (1009 D (B))

The game balance is not an issue. Diplomacy is self-balancing, you can have a map where france starts on 12 and everyone else starts on 3, and they would still be able to contain france because 'diplomacy'. (I've been thinking of writing some mid/late game 'scenarios' to help people practice their mid/late game play, with different victory conditions, like taking a game which has already finished in 1912 and letting players 'win' if they beat the original player's performance... But tangent)

Making germany a little stronger would force russia, france and england to ally more often. Just like autria and italy should he one of the most common alliances in the game.
ubercacher16 (139 D)
18 Jul 17 UTC
That is a very good point. Of course then you have the problem of Germany being defeated more often.

P.S. Love your name!
Than the map would be dedicated to Germany.
And if someone has an idea on how to play Austria better, it would be great.
Especially in gunboat.

Like this, I guess:
gameID=197804

My strategy is to trust Italy fully. If he stabs me, I fight back:
gameID=170701
If he resists the retaliation, I take both of us down:
gameID=200235
Well, thats interesting. When Italy stabs me, I only try to show him that he will not get Trieaste (or Vienna), but instead of that Asutria can actually go after Venice or even Rome before Turkey knocks to Serbia. Ill try it. Thanks Claesar.
But still, in this first example - there was a war between T and R.
If R and T work together, I dont believe that its possible to take Venice (and Rome) before you loose Galicia and Greece. It can be interesting, at least.

No, but if R&T work together while Italy attacks you, I don't think anyone has a remedy.
True. Ah screw it. :-)
