Its not so much about what the government gives to them though I am sure some in the progressive side would argue it but not all of them. Just like one could argue there is a significant amount of republicans that are for stacking things for massive corporations and the wealthy as we see with the most recent attempt at tax cuts.

The fight between progressives and democrats is not so much about handouts but to rebalance those that are part of the working class. Fight for a higher minimum wage so that those do work don't also have to seek out food stamps and other government benefits. I know of quite a few that push 40-60 hours and still qualify for government assistance which is pretty sad to say the least.

The other major fight is corruption vs taking money out of politics. The problem is this fight is harder than the first as both parties are bought quite a bit. Progressives did pretty well overall this election in that Bernie with next to no name recognition almost defeated someone that has been known for a very long time, backed by a massive super PAC and the DNC still almost lost in the primary.

This is a guy who has been supported on the taxpayer dime for much of his career. Ain't nobody scarfs down the handouts like the military!
