Putin Thread
We have a Trump Thread,so this seems fitting as I believe Russia will be newsworthy for quite a bit. I'll start you guys off: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russia-deploys-missile-violating-treaty-and-challenging-trump/ar-AAmVID5?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp

Rules Question
It's a bit of a convoluted situation, but I'm actually confused about why WebDip adjudicated the way it did.

I've never made a rules question thread before in all the years I've played Diplomacy. How exciting.

Is this ethical?
Let's say I have a stalemate position, it's DSS, and I can eliminate players without risking anything at all, increasing my share of the pot.
Is it ethical to let those players live?
Does this change if it's anon or not anon?

North Africa & North Atlantic Ocean: The Oddities of the Board.
Not all territories in Diplomacy are created equally. Some are more useful than others. Territories such as North Africa and North Atlantic Ocean are often left vacant, especially at the start of the game. However, can anybody think of a useful and good reason for a player to enter either of these territories? In what situations might either of these territories prove useful?

50 shades of grey violates Geneva Conventions
I think its a shame we are sexualizing and romanticizing torture. I believe that at the time these novels came out; they directly helped normalize waterboarding and guantanamo bay.

Yemen
In our continuing series on what makes America Great. Yemen.

Mostly i'd like to discuss the morality, or what *should* be happening in Yemen today.

We've known this to be true ever since the Saudi bombing campaign started in 2015.

Well, I'd say bombing little girls and slaughtering civilians isn't the way to go. If you want under reported terrorist attacks, the drone and bombing campaign would add a ton of items that have been all but ignored. But then since when do Americans give two shits about bombing people. After all to most Americans Arabs are even human.

@Santa: I seriously doubt that my english is going to have much effect on the people's republic of China. I they barely even listen to their own people, then what are the chances thry will listen to a white guy like me?)

You might aswell ask me what made the Mongol hordes great? Interesting armchair conversation, but it's not going to make a difference.

If you want to asvocate doing aomething about China, maybe a trade embargo... But then, the US/Western world has enough of its own problems to deal with first.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

You could mention Tibet in a diplomatic channel to the Chinese, and they'd tell you it is part of China. They could also reply, what about Standing Rock (DAPL)
Ogion (3817 D)

Well, since the US is now going to do precisely zero while dictators run rampant and commit war crimes the answer to "what makes Russia great" and what makes China great" are the same think: enabling from a weak ass so-called President Trump. All Xi or Putin have to do is throw a little shade and Trump will wet himself
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Wet himself? You mean order troops in??

Surely that is why they will avoid throwing anything his way...

To be boring, Yemen is strategic because it borders the southern entrance to the Red Sea. If control of the entrance falls into the wrong hands, it's tantamount to shutting down the Suez Canal. Yemen has some Shiites sponsored by Iran and some Sunnis sponsored by Saudi. Yemen is poor and has far too little water for its people. Yemen's primary purpose is to be a battleground between Saudi and Iran where if things get too hot, Saudi and Iran can pretend that they aren't really there. It's a shame that they're caught in the middle.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Yes, the Saudis and Iranians are the main regional powers, what is Trump doing sending troops in?
JECE (1322 D)
12 Feb 17 UTC
Hauta: The Yemenis don't have a navy with which to cut off the entrance to Red Sea. Somaliland, Puntland and Eritria, across the Straight, aren't exactly islands of stability. Yet Somaliland doesn't even get international recognition that can help protect it from pirates and extremists!

The Shi'ite/Sunni divide is also overstated by so-called experts. The Houthis are actually Zaidis, not quite Shi'ites (in fact, they are allied with Sunni factions), and Iran sends comparatively very little aid and weapons to the country. All these 'explanations' do nothing but justify the Saudi massacre of Yemenis on the ground.
Hauta (1618 D(S))
12 Feb 17 UTC
JECE: Agreed about the Yemeni's not really being a threat to cut off the entrance. However, the Iranians are there. It is they who have the power to do so, even though Iran pretends not to be involved in the area.

Regarding the Shiite/Sunni divide, perhaps it is overstated but the underlying rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia is not. Thus, Shiite/Sunni is just a shorthand to describe who is supporting who.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

With Sunni and Shia as excuses for the conflict which is fudamentally about power, and who controls things.

Religion used as an excuse to divide people. A tactic so often used by those in political power...

Iran wasn't seen as an enemy of the Gulf Arabs until the Revolution. There weren't Sunni/Shiite problems until Iran stopped being a Saudi-Israeli-Western ally.

Italy Opening Strategy: Early Attack on France?
Venice goes to Piedmont, Rome goes to Tuscany, and Naples goes to Tyrrhenian Sea. If France moved Marseilles to Spain, he will be forced to take a guess at whether Italy will enter Marseilles or leave it vacant. If Spain re-enters Marseilles, France will have a slow start against Italy. And if Italy gets into Marseilles and Tunis, he will get two builds. Thoughts?

Where'd the new rules come from?
I usually try to stay updated on what people talk about in the forum daily. Recently I haven't been able to and I came back to find that their are new rules regarding how shitty we can be to each other on the forum. I understand that there was a thread that was so bad the mods felt the need to make more rules. Anyone care to tell me what was said that was bad enough to warrant this?

The title says it all: is there ever a situation or scenario in which Russia should move his fleet in St. Petersburg (South Coast) to Finland? What kind of diplomatic arrangements need to be made for such a move to occur?

Austro-Hungarian-Turkish Alliance: Just for Fun? Or Turkish Delight?
Turkey and Austria-Hungary work together against Russia, with a passive Italian player. Turkey moves into Bulgaria, Black Sea, and Armenia. And Austria-Hungary moves into Rumania and Galicia. Is this just pure fantasy? Or will Austria-Hungary and Turkey be treating themselves to Turkish delight by the end of it?

gunboat related - grabbing Munich in 1901
I find that a lot of players that start as France would actually try to get Burgundy into Munich in gunboats in Autumn 01. What is the point of that? Germany will have to build armies to get France out again and thus put England in a massively advantaged position.

Thoughts?

Colours of the Great Powers on WebDip
Why does WebDip have the colour allotment it does?
In the original rules, it says that Austria is Red, England: Dark Blue, France: Light Blue, Turkey: Yellow, Germany: Black, Russia: White, Italy: Green. Why change England and Russia?
