Feature discussion: newbie diplomacy
So, one feature that would be amazing for new players is a "test the waters" mode for diplomacy.

Something that new players could try to see if they like Diplomacy, without the commitment to a four month game checking the site every day, or setting aside five hours for a live game. Maybe it's a short game up until 1902? I have no idea. Ideas?

1v1 games
Is it possible to play 1v1 games on this site? I love playing them in person, but can't seem to figure out a way to set one here. Am I not seeing an option somewhere?
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

It is not an option.
It is an option on vdiplomacy.net
Many users have an account on both sites.

Which 1vs1s do you play? I think France vs Austria is the most balanced...

Go to VDiplomacy and sign up there as well as here.. You can use a different player name, there's a rumour CB has many names over there, but I refuse to believe that.

Following on from the player retention thread, I'm considering enabling a 1v1 variant here. Is that something people would like to see? Which one?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
29 Sep 16 UTC
I think FvA is the best one. Most balanced.

I wrote GvI and JiggernautVsFrance-Germany and the England Vs Turkey but i don't think any of them are as good as the original.

Actually looking at the stats it looks like E* vs T isn' as unbalanced as i thought, but i still think it is sligthly worse, you spend so much time rushing to the front with no actual engagement, i think there is an optimal route for each country (with no second guessing or depending on your opponent's moves) and if you fail to follow to optimal you lose... Thoug it is an interesting alternative in a tournament environment. I would still rate it worse off that others.

E*vT is technically the most balanced, but it's also by far the most boring.

Frankland versus Juggernaught is extremely Frankland-biased.

Germany versus Italy is a bit of a weird one. By stats it's not balanced, but that may be due to players making the easy mistake of overinvesting in fleets as Italy - the best 1v1 player on the site (Devonian) swears by Italy being the slightly stronger power in high-level games of that variant, despite Germany apparently having a huge advantage in the stats.

By Statistics FvA isn't as balanced as it's made out to be, and I'd agree with the stats on that. Austria has a fairly big advantage in that variant that tends to only be balanced out by poor Austrian play.

@ATC, whichever one you you choose, I think we should definitely have a 1v1 on a Classic map on webDip, since webDip is focused on being the best in Classic Diplomacy.

When I first joined this site, I didn't have the patience to join standard games, and I found it difficult to find a live game that actually filled up and then also didn't NMR on the first move. Had there been a 1v1 on a Classic map, I think I would have played that, and then after getting a game or two of those going, I would have likely then had the patience to join some standard games.

1v1 seems like a great way for players to get a game going quickly, which should help keep new players interested. Plus, even though 1v1 is very different from 7v7, new players with no experience can at least get familiarity with the movement around the Classic map.

If you add two 1v1 variants, I think the one that @Captainmeme suggested looks interesting and balanced:
"The one I'd recommend is Duo (http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=22), perfectly symmetrical yet has an incredible amount of strategy involved."
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
29 Sep 16 UTC
I don't think any of the 1v1 variants are balanced besides Duo. It's a non-real map that is perfectly symmetrical. If you want strategy and balance, it's the best.

If you want one that is a real map, though, I think Germany vs Italy is a good one. England/Turkey is also good.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

i have to say, i'd have a huge preference for the classic map.

If only because it lets you practice stalemate positions for a classic game end-games...
Also because i hate the look of Duo. Currently working on a new map myself, and the feel of it is really important, I think players like maps more when they feel like they know where the map represents from the real world (or even a fantasy world...)

But i have no evidence what-so-ever to back this up.

I personally have liked Germany vs Italy when I've played with Friends.

Do any of the classic variants have neutral standing units (units on supply centers)? It seems like it would be more interesting if some of the target supply centers had to be taken with support instead of just walking in, when the opponent is not challenging a center.

No, i did think about doing that to add balance, but i don't think anyone tried it.

How do people communicate in Gunboat?
I'm playing in a couple gunboat games, and it seems like other players are working well together, with regards to support and such. I trust they are not messaging each other, and so I would like to know how they figure out what the other players are going to do.

Creating an app for webDip.
Because of my schedule, I have gotten into the habit of using my phone for webDiplomacy, but the web format isn't the best for a small screen on a phone.
This thread is more about a discussion on how the app should look, support, etc.
