It's understandable how if you can get points out you should have to put points in, I don't think the fact that the original player bet, but you can receive their reward, is a compelling argument on a theoretical or practical level.

What does sound compelling (at least to me) is that the CD are often in below-average to nigh-impossible situations. The bet put in, or the "points worth" measurement, is context independent, where taking over a CD clearly is not.

I'm all for reduced prices to take over CD to give incentive for it, I just don't see how the fact that someone else paid for that seat leads to that conclusion. Unless you're also positing that the replacement should also get a reduced amount of payout from a draw/solo?...

Yes correct so why chuck your points away in joining a game where you are nearly dead anyway, usually the joining is just to watch all the other countries attack you because they are looking for easy SCs (I am talking GBs here).
In a Full Press game it is slightly different as you can strike up alliances but in GB once someone has CD'ed that position is as good as finished.
I don't join CD positions with a thought to win, just to make it a better game for the existing players ..... I've stopped joining because it is just a waste of points.

I don't know why there shouldn't be a discount for taking over conservative positions, too.

@chluke, this is something we are working towards. In the past, jmo and other mods have offered to pay the full price for people to take over CD positions. We will work towards making this to be a discount. We are also working on reliability rating and we are hoping to reward people by increasing their RR if they take over CD positions.

Zultar I will ignore your insults as they give no value added in a serious discussion, the code is written to generate an amount of points that must be paid to join CD positions, this amount varies and is calculated based on how good the code estimates that position is, surely if you wanted to change this you would change this code, or is this an over-simplistic view of what code changes can do.... also you insulting people that question things is so churlish, is it time to grow up?

ATC, jmo and Kestas have updated most of the necessary stuff and we are talking with Oli but not everything from Vdip can be just added since Kestas and Oli code things differently. Anything we add to webdip has to be tested more than once since we will make the code open source and it has to work with the main codes. We are also talking with Oli about how to make add-ons more accessible from now on.

My apology to others, Mapu included, if I react to Nigee frequently putting down the "people who run the site" despite not knowing how much time it has taken the mods, particularly jmo and ATC, to resolve site issues and make the updates that were done today. They have been working with Kestas and me for months to get this done and we have regularly updated people that we are working and making progress, so it irritates me that he just puts us or the mods down all the time because he is in constant troll mode. But yeah, I should just ignore his shtick and move on.

Zultar sometimes you behave like a petulant little boy, I think the main point is not whether you have or have not done something, this site is not all about you, get over your ego.
I do not believe people want CD takeovers to be free because if they did the code would have been written differently, my thoughts are that if someone CDs it is probably that some RTE has caught up with them or they have just abandoned the game. In this situation what is more important, that the remaining people get an additional few points if they win because of a takeover or that the integrity of the game is restored because other players are encouraged to take over dead or weak game positions at the earliest possible opportunity. Every now and again strong positions are abandoned but it is actually irrelevant the strength of the position if the primary objective is to encourage takeovers, the failure to do this in the past has led to a lot of poor quality or cancelled games due to other players being reluctant to join losing positions because they have to pay. Make it free and there will be a lot less open CD positions in games because players have nothing to lose by taking over poor positions, these will lead to a better gaming experience with less CDs, what would be fabulous was that as soon as a CD position became available someone posted it on the forum or an automatic message was sent to the forum highlighting a CD position became available .... I'm pretty sure this would be a fabulous improvement to the gaming experience here, especially for live games.

But do not waste our time complaining about a feature when you can look on the front page of the forum to see what code changes we are working on right now.

Move preview was implemented TODAY, so with all due respect, get off our backs about what you think should be easy code changes, if you'd like to implement them then feel free, otherwise you're just going to have to deal with our pace of new development.

And to correct your rather ignorant viewpoint, no, that change is not a simple or quick fix. It affects all games, so it's something that has to be tested extensively on a test server, then checked and double checked when added to the site live, it has to be added to github, sent out to all our sister sites that depend on our code to ensure we aren't going to mess up how their own CD system works, and involves possible site downtime. That all said, it's something we'll probably do eventually, but until then you could simply ask me to do another one of my multiple "Take over CD's for free" threads, which I am typically willing to do on request, instead of running straight to the forum to bitch.

The point I am making is not 'how fabulous do we all think Zultar and jmo are?' it is whether CD takeovers should be free or not.
Please don't try and turn every discussion to be something about you, this has been an issue way before you were a Mod and is a conversation I had with Kestas about whether CD takeovers should be free or not so actually nothing to do with Zultar or yourself, why do you guys have to get so personal all the time?

If it is ever done to lower the takeover price, the price should be low enough that all cd's get picked up (supply and demand). Probably doesn't need to be zero. Half/third/quarter ... doesn't really matter. The pot is already paid and the other players mostly want to finish a clean game and have a replacement player as quickly as possible.

Some amount of money/points is okay to pay, so the new entrant has some skin in the game (but their time is also "skin"), and they should want to win their share of the draw (if you reduce the prize, then this also disincentives people to take over games).
