What's the name of a picture/movie that changes and transitions smoothly in a loop?
So what I mean is that you don't really notice it's a loop unless you're paying close attention because the end of the loop fits perfectly on the start of the loop. There's no strong feeling of repetition. Just a 'background' continuously moving.
Just looking for the word for such a thing. I saw one quite a while ago and thought I could use one of those in a design, but now I finally have the time to do something with it, I forgot what it's called :-(

Gunboat: Playing as Russia
When, in a gunboat game, in the Spring 1901 moves, England, Germany, Austria and Turkey all make an anti-Russia opening, what is Russia supposed to do, exactly?

After hearing about that Congo shit I was wondering what other scandals/notorious players/legendary stories there are buried in the annals of this site. I assume some of the elder players would know some of the lore I speak of and can weave some tales of old?

Is it normal for people to sign up for very slow games (10 days/phase) and stay quiet?
I am relatively new to webDip. From the little experience I have here, I get the impression that it is not uncommon for very slow games to be pretty quiet. I've had no replies at all from some parties, even though they are giving orders. Is this usual? I thought very slow games would have lots and lots of diplomatic talk.

Control active game play time option ?
Hello,

What if it was possible to control the time allowed for game play, such as, "game only active between the hours of X & Y". Then shorter phase games could be played more easily and not at strange hours of the night. Thoughts?

NFL Pick 'em Week 12: Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow...eh, Buffalo? ;)
So, with Buffalo's game postponed until Monday (and moved to Detroit as, um, Buffalo's sort of buried under snow) and the Raiders having won their first game of the season--and in more than a year!--vs. the rival Chiefs, we enter Week 12. The Lions and Patriots meet in a big clash. Rams//Chargers is an intriguing match-up. Cardinals/Seahawks up in Seattle, and Ravens/Saints on a suddenly-crucial Monday Nighter. Week 12... pick 'em!

Proposal to Limit Cancelled Games
The issue with games being cancelled due to Meta-gaming and other infractions has gotten to the point where it is no longer fun to play. Let's solve this!
Newmunich (208 D(B))
22 Nov 14 UTC
A significant percentage of games I played have been cancelled. Thirty plus percent at least. Including tournament games with "top" players. Most recently a game with a 100 point buy in. I, as I am sure most of you do, commit significant time to playing these games. Only to have them cancelled. So let's solve this!

My proposal: The current game set up and selection process allows for the member to pick which game they join. This provides the opportunity for members to add multiple accounts to one game or join games with their friends.

Would it be possible to set up a game selection system that randomly assigns players to games? The member would input the type of game they would like to play. They are then notified when that game type, with randomly selected players, has been set up. This is similar to other online games like Zynga's Poker.

I really enjoy playing WebDiplomacy. Hoping we can find a way to solve this problem.
Interesting idea.

Are you proposing that this be the default or only system of entry or would it compliment existing options? I bring this up because the private game is and has been the best way to avoid problems with metagamers and cancelations. Game creation options would also make this difficult - buyin, victory conditions, phase length, etc. I do think this may be a decent option to add and is worth exploring to flush out the details of how it could be implemented.

This cannot be the only system of entry or the default one. But I do think this is a good idea as an alternative system to complement the existing one.
Once GR is integrated into the site - GR can be an input parameter for the game allotment also.
For example: A Player with GR X could say he wants to play in a game with GR range A<X<Y and the system would take that into account as well when assigning and allotting games.
JECE (1322 D)

I would be against integrating GR in any official way like that. The rating punishes users for taking over positions in CD.

I agree with JECE Good point.

This is why I play very few public games.
And what is to stop people from quitting a certain game just to get a redraw of the game? People can just leave and join a new game. What about points? Some people want specific buy ins. If the number is arbitrary, like 23, it will be easy to multi still. Or sometimes you'll be thrown in a game with too high or low a bet. I dont think the volume of games is high enough to be effectively "randomized".

22 Nov 14 UTC
I don't join random games anymore either. For that reason.
Sh@dow (3512 D)

@cardcollector The idea would be that both GR and RR would be input parameters going into a game selection. And so would buy in range etc. It wouldn't be a specific buy in but a buy-in range or a GR range so that you can get 7 players looking for very similar things within a range acceptable to them.
@JECE - yes, GR may punish you for taking over CD. Doesn't mean GR is being force fed to you. GR would be an optional parameter for those who want to use it.
So if I wanted I could use GR as an input parameter for a game selection. And you wouldn't. It just increases options for the user that is all.
cardcollector (1270 D)
22 Nov 14 UTC
My point is that with the variety of games it would be hard to do that, and easy to bypass randomizing to cheat. For example if I played an America's game, gunboat, phases 1-3days (given parameters) and 100-200 bet (another range in parameters), it would be fairly easy to cheat because it is rarely played.

Just know that if you ever play with me in a game with a meta, I always opt to eliminate the meta and draw as opposed to cancel.
Newmunich (208 D(B))

All good points. Sounds like this approach may not be ideal. Hopefully something will be figured out. I've never figured out the private games - don't know who to get included.

If you see my other thread labeled $5 Tables I'm doing exactly that. I ask for high quality players (who most of all need to be reliable) to join me. I give the passwords once we gather enough players.

The webDiplomacy points ruleset is almost perfect, but...
No one should be rewarded for a game that fails to produce a victor. Everyone who bought into a drawn game and didn't leave should receive an even split of the pot. Otherwise you facilitate awful situations like " just kill Austria, then draw" or more intricate draw pacts, which favor anyone who lucked into a difficult-to-kill nation like France.
