Hamas’ very existence is used a means of painting the Palestinian National Liberation movement as a religious conflict. In truth it’s quite the opposite. Prior to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Palestinian militancy was of the Marxist, leftist, socialist, nationalist and most important SECULAR variety. Quranic scripture and the concept of martyrdom were not invoked prior to Hamas. Liberation of the oppressed, liberation of the working class and liberation of the occupied were the common themes pushed by Palestinian fighters. The PLO and all its sub-groups, the PFLP, the Abu Nidal Organization, the Palestinian Fedayeen were secular and as a result their actions were not rooted in the teachings of Islam. The root of the Palestinian insurgency is the occupation of their homeland , the right of return of their refugees and the strive for self-determination not religion.
Ask yourself, if Hamas' founders were atheist would they still exist? The answer is yes. The proof is as I've said numerous times prior to Hamas, all Palestinian militant groups were secular and the faces of it were atheist.
One would then argue that if Palestinian militancy is not rooted in the principle of Islam than why have we never seen Palestinian Christians join the struggle. They did and they were the face of Palestine in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The most famous Palestinian militant besides Yasser Arafat and Hamas leaders was Leila Khalid, a female and born Christian. She was responsible for the hi-jacking of multiple Israeli civilian planes. This clearly shows the hijackings are not necessarily an Islamic thing. Her group, the PFLP was communist and loaded with raised Christians. It’s founded George Habbash and the founder of its deadliest splinter group, the PFLP-EO was also an ex-Christian by the name of Wadi Hadad. The general secretary of the DFLP was Nayef Hawatmeh, a Palestinian Christian
