It's Maple's Alter Ego! (But Seriously--Should Serling Be Forced to Sell the Team?)
http://nba.si.com/2014/04/29/donald-sterling-adam-silver-nba-owners-reaction/ To be clear--this is HYPOTHETICAL. There's nothing in the NBA Constitution that gives the commissioner the right to do this, so this is more just a thought experiment--say that power existed, and Adam Silver COULD force Serling to sell the team based on his repeated racist comments over the years, with this last doozy being the kicker. If the power existed, SHOULD the man lose his team over this?

Gunboat game for the reliable but poor
I'm tired of the NMRs and CDs that are far too common i the low-bet games I can afford to play. I'd love to play in the big-pot games with the best players, but I don't have the $ (and, hey, I'm not that good anyway). If there are other middle of the road players who feel the same way, perhaps we can organize a password-protected game (or two if there's enough interest) of reliable gunboaters. More below.

Phase length for FTF games?
I've been thinking about putting together a face to face game for some new players (friends who don't play diplomacy.... yet). But, I've never played FTF myself - so:

What kind of phase lengths do people use? I assume that there's also a time or turn cap too (eg game ends in 1910)?

Underage Drinking
Two IU players busted for underage drinking, one I know well. I guess the shocking part of their arrests is that the police in B-town are such assholes that they go around hunting for underage drinkers on Little 500 Day.

Please tell me no one on webDip suffered until 21 before their first drink.

What is the statue of limitations for prosecuting people who have broken the site rules, cheating specifically?

It becomes more difficult and time consuming on our part too look for data from a long time ago. With that said feel free to email the case to us, because we will look into it regardless, time consuming or not if they are cheating we should be able to find it.

I can try to be more helpful, but you're asking a very vague question.

If you did something wrong a long time ago and have othwrwise been a clean player, I don't think the mods would be too harsh on you if you came forward.
What happens next kind of depends whether you're going to accuse yourself of cheating in the forum.
Al Swearengen (0 DX)

Thank you for your responses. Originally this was meant to be a joke. Frankly, I feel that most of the posts on this board are probably closer to trolling than genuine.
Worse still, they are usually very uncreative. I was hoping this joke would be found humorous to some, and it certainly seems to have a caught a couple of people off guard.

@abgemacht
I think what you meant to say, is that my question was very *general*.
Yes, and necessarily so. I was looking for a policy rather than a schedule or a set of case histories, for example. No matter. It may not even be worthwhile for staff to set a statue of limitations.

For the rest of you: Please be careful. You could make a mistake now, and staff could penalize you for it ten years from now!

Ok, then I'll say the other thing:

@Al "Please be careful. You could make a mistake now, and staff could penalize you for it ten years from now! "

That's just plain ridiculous. There are active members walking around who are a testament to the fact that there are quite some second chances. The mods are all gamers themselves, and enjoyment of the game - for all members - is the main priority. As such, leniency is a bit like the harm principle, the more cheaters ruin the fun of other players, the less leniency there is for them.

It's like the others said, every case is unique. But if you've done something harmless and/or it's been quite a while, and you've been clean since, then leniency can be quite broad. If you've done something more detrimental to the enjoyment of others and/or it's recent or on-going, well, there's a discussion to be had then.

@The Honorable Minister of War,

My Dear Friend,

One of the staff has been in on the joke for several days. Pretty much every one else was in on it last night.

Are you trolling? If so, you've got me good. I really can't tell.

Certainly no one has provided better public testimony as to the judiciousness and thoroughness of the staff in their administration of the rules that site's founders were nice enough to hand down to us.

Or am I very much mistaken?

I'd like to be honest that some of us are interested in discovering and establishing legal grounds that would permit the return of Sandgoose. Sure, he was a cheater. And a rabid one. Indeed, how he managed to get himself banned while on vacation is beyond me.

But nonetheless, we seek his return.

@Al, our investigations aren't real time. In the course of investigating him it was discovered that he'd been banned and rejoined more then anyone else in site history. That along with multiple other offenses where enough for about a dozen bans. Despite that we gave him multiple chances to admit his transgressions, and he refused to do so. In some cases we're may consider shorter bans, but for people like Sarg, Sandgoose, and Agent K, who are some of the worst cheaters in site history it's just not happening. We even asked the community as a whole to vote on Agent K's possible return and the response was overwhelmingly against once all the details where laid out.

If we allowed someone like Sandgoose to come back there is no way we could justify banning anyone else. It's unfortunate, since he's a rather entertaining fellow, but that's where we're at.

What about MeepMeep -- can we get him back?
Al Swearengen (0 DX)
26 Apr 14 UTC
@JMO,

Thank you, Sir. Please rest assured that the standards used to evaluate Sandgoose's various and sundry infractions are not in doubt. If cheating were an Olympic event, Sandgoose would have the gold.

Also, I would want it understood that I'm not attempted to belabor the point. If you're tired of discussing the matter, then I'm prepared to let it rest for now.

One additional point though is that exile is sometimes less permanent than people think. You would think that the French people were safe when they exiled Napoleon, for example, on Elba.

But they totally weren't! Napoleon spent less than a year in exile, before sailing right back to France! And usurping power once again! And drawing France into a couple of wars.

But it's not like Sandgoose is squatting over on VDip quietly plotting his revenge, right?
Al Swearengen (0 DX)
26 Apr 14 UTC
@Mapu,

I'm surprised that you even need to ask. Of course Meepmeep can't come back.

The global elite are conspiring to keep him out.

...or am I confusing him with a different troll? Who was the guy with the wacky political website and a small truckload of conspiracy theories? He was at least fun.

jmo1121109 (3812 D)
26 Apr 14 UTC
@Mapu, MeepMeep was never banned.

"But it's not like Sandgoose is squatting over on VDip quietly plotting his revenge, right?"
I guess it's a good thing I'm a mod over there too. :)

Woody Allen, child molestor[?], given a lifetime achievement award.
So, one of my courses this semester is about "contemporary issues" and one of the issues I'm supposed to debate during our final is whether Woody Allen deserved the lifetime achievement award given to him by the Golden Globes. I've been assigned to argue on the side that he should not have gotten the award. And I want to hear what the people of WebDip think. Source links in the thread.

Fixing part of the NMR and CD in beginning of games
To be clear, I am NOT a programmer, but it seems to me a simple fix at the start of new games would be an an initial ready button. This would allow the game not to start if everyone is not present. For longer duration games people would have a whole phase to figure things are starting and for live games,the duration could be 5-10 minutes that way if one or more people don't show up, they get kicked out so some else could take their place.

Thought??
