The Future of Tournaments webDip
As webDip grows, we need to relook at some of our old policies. The Mods have decided that it's time we rethink how Tournaments are done. I'm currently sitting in while most of the Mods are away, so I figured I'd get the community's input now, for them to consider when they get back.

V Web diplomacy ego's
When the site went down last night i signed up to the v web diplomacy site and checked the forum and one thread suggests that the players in the top forty are better than the top 400 here. What a bunch of tosh they are really up on themselves :(

You don't fall off of the vdiplomacy one. However, I think it is less of a zero-sum thing than the GR here. It appears as though the top players can and will continue to climb assuming they keep attaining the same results.

I am ranked 71 on vdip and 131 here, so my ratio is more like 2 to 1 rather than 4 to 1.

That being said -- one result on vdip can oscillate your score wildly. I think I jumped 60 spots after my last game completed. So maybe there's not a huge correlation at all.

"that's probably a pretty good comparison Fasces, a question about your ranking system though. Do people fall off the list after a given amount of time? And were you checking the all time GhostRating or the Monthly one?"
I checked monthly because we don't have an all time rating. Gantz peak rating is 1428, and currently is 1369. Bozo peaked at 1568 and is currently sitting at 1377.

Since its zero sum like the GR, and its HOF is looking at the current rating, not their highest rating, I decided its more comparable to the monthly GR rather then all time list.

I ignored all the players better then Gantz who haven't logged in in the last 24 hours, which included 0 people, since remember were only dealing with 4 players, lol.

Yeah...anyone on VDip is a real loser. Definitely no good players there...

"I think I jumped 60 spots after my last game completed. So maybe there's not a huge correlation at all."
you jumped at least 30. The rating gives higher weightings to games with more people in it then games with fewer. I think thats a mistake, but the ELO system is still a work in progress.
Maybe its just my opinion, but I think WebDip would smack the Vdip community. I've yet to have a real challenging game over there besides the one chaos game that I played (or some variant similar to that). Even when I tried to organize a game with only the good players I encountered, I wasn't challenged. Meanwhile in the Masters tourney over here I've sweated it through every game. Idk, maybe I just filter who I play with more over here than there.

Excluding 1v1s (1v1s are not an accurate measure of someones skill in the game of diplomacy), you haven't played a game since October 8, 2012. So its very possible that your just not remembering clearly.

Not counting 1v1s, here are your stats on vdip:
Defeated: 3
Won: 4
Drawn: 8
Survived: 2

Your playing a lot of 2 player games (40 out of your 57 games have been 1v1s), and your pretty good at them (given how you were able to hold your ground against Bozo, Guaroz and Devonian in a tourney.).

A comparison of your stats percentages of vdip vs webdip:
vdip:
Defeat: 18%
Won: 24%
Drawn: 47%
Survived: 12%

webdip:
Defeat: 17%
Won: 12%
Drawn: 48%
Survived: 24%

Twice as many solos, but the same number of defeats and draws. However keep in mind that the twice has many, means 4 solos over 17 games.

I don't think you played enough games to get an accurate reputation of the vdip community.

I played on both sites and in my opinion webdip has more quality overall. I am no longer on the rank list(due to inactivity), but at one time I remember being 2nd on the web dip(GR), and not in the first 100 on the vdip list I think.

Like fasces, I tried to compare my stats from two sites, and got really interesting result. They are almost identical. (I also excluded 1vs1 games from the stats). The result is:

Game stats webdip:
Defeated: 3 ( 9% )
Won: 8 ( 24% )
Drawn: 19 ( 56% )
Survived: 3 ( 9% )
Resigned: 1 ( 3% )
Total (finished): 34

Conclusion: Win/draw percentage 80% vs. defeat/survived/resigned percentage 20%
*1 resign is because of dead net connection in live game :S

Game stats vdip:
Defeated: 2 ( 10% )
Won: 6 ( 30% )
Drawn: 10 ( 50% )
Survived: 2 ( 10% )
Total (finished): 20

Conclusion: Win/draw percentage 80% vs. defeat/survived percentage 20%

The stats does not favor any site so I do not know why I had feeling that competition is tougher on the webdip...maybe because I mostly played tournament games that had some additional competition energy in them.

If there is a game between two sites, I think vdip would likely win because of the smaller number of players there who played frequently against each other so they would easily recognize who is who in anonymous game and had an edge over webdip players.
Is there an easy way to filter out 1v1 games on vdip for your stats?
Dejan0707 (1608 D)

If there is an easier way, I do not know it...I done it manually. Luckily, I do not have to many games under my belt so ti was rather easy task.

One issue I think that will play into this is that the games on v-dip are not nearly as well designed as the classic version. This flaw changes things quite. After all, the classic game had many revisions, countless playtests and serious consideration before it even got finalized. the biggest issue i have with variants is that each country borders so many other countries that many of the maps are just a mosh-pit of attacks and supports. there are far fewer borders. sea zones are the same way. this changes the game dynamically.

Given this, we're really talking about two entirely different games that have some common threads. people are trying to compare apples to oranges on this.

now, if you have a large enough pool of classic games on v-dip that you can compare stats, then you might have something.

The logic could be that if we have one man in room A who can eat 20 apples in 5 minutes, and in the room B different man who can eat 10 oranges in 5 minutes, one could conclude that the man A can eat more apples or oranges than the man B could. :)

"Is there an easy way to filter out 1v1 games on vdip for your stats?"
There isn't, I did it manually as well.

"One issue I think that will play into this is that the games on v-dip are not nearly as well designed as the classic version."
This is the arrogance of the webdippers. Classic is not the best map.
Sengoku, Fall of the American Empire, Milan and Europe 1939, the symmetrical maps, Verdun and Hundred are all more balanced.

1v1s, 1066, Hundred, Verdun, zues 5, colonial, Imp 2, 901 and WW4 are more enjoyable (in my oppinion) games.

Classic is the original, but that doesn't mean its the best, over the years people have made changes in hopes to make a better, more balanced, more enjoyable game. Not all of them succeeded, but many did. I will agree that most of the variants on vDip are not as good as Classic, but some of them are, and the arrogance to assume that Classic is better without actually trying the other variants is something to be noted.

It probably has been discussed/done before but I don't think I ever heard/saw it...
Ven-Tyr, Rome-Nap, Nap-Ion.

It's not really offensive at all to Austria and it leaves open a load of possibilities... What do you think?

Creating an EOG periodical
I got the thought that it may be nice to create a collection of some of the sites best EOGs. I figure that people could point me in the direction of some of their favourites. I could give them a quick edit (to conform their styles at least) and then release them periodically as a collection. Ultimately, it would be cool to have them stored on a navigatable website. This is just a thought though so all action, of course, is pension my laziness.

The non-variant series...
I am thinking of starting a new series (passworded) wherein the buy-in is irrelavent because the points at the end of the game go back to the original polayers and the winner/drawees get nothing extra. This would eliminate the PPSC vs. WTA arguments and their issues as it wouldn't matter (although it would still affect GR, nothing I can do about that).

Anyone up for trying this out?

Google plus hangout game?
So who's interested in a public press live game on google plus? (obviously it'd be gunboat on the site, because all communication would be done over video chat). We could broadcast the game so observers could see the conversation in real time.

I'm thinking 10 minutes per turn, Sunday afternoon at around 2PM PST.
How does that sound?
