The Level of Competition of WebDip: Better/Worse/Comparable?
I personally believe that the level of competition has increased steadily. Since I've been here, I've seen many new players who have raised the bar such as Cach, sly, Tasnica, 8foldWay, CStein, ghug, gen. lee, fairfax, SD (gb only), and many others. I think that it might be harder to raise your GR substantially now than when the site was new. Not to start a flame war, but I don't know if the old upper echelon would have gained as much GR if they competed with the current crop.

Procedural Question
Lets say that someone wants to start a tournament. And in the tournament, the mods would have to get involved by making sure that every one of the 7 players played 7 different countries. What is the proper procedure? Do we ask the mods in advance? I'm guessing yes. If so, then how long in advance? Or is this something that is not acceptable? Thanks in advance.

Any interest in a small 7-man tournament?
Could be gunboat, could be full press, public press.

I'm thinking 25 or 50 buy in per game.

Please stop displaying the Newtown shooter's name to the public. The fact that you all force us to remember him is what motivates other wackos to do it again. People like me that have had their lives affected by killing don't appreciate it.

Another noob question, what's the appeal of no in-game messaging?
Just seems to me that exchanging private messages, and people lying to you with them, would be the most interesting part of the way the game plays out. No messaging at all feels like it would take away all the diplomatic relations in the game, which are what the entire game is based on!

So what's the appeal, and why are they so popular here?

Were a lot of combat planes used in WWI?
It's for a speech for school in English of 4 minutes, tomorrow, just came up with the subject combat planes and I think I know enough about WWII but if someone could tell me about if, how and how much they were used in WWI and any other useful information (everything welcome but the speech will be rather general, just as deep as it needs to be for 4 interesting minutes) that would be very helpful!

I think I've got the WWI part... Feel free to correct etc! Also, I wrote as I went, haven't checked it yet, going to finish the other part first.

I'm going to talk about aircraft.
I will start with World War 1, after that comes World War 2 in Europe, and I’ll end with World War 2 in the Pacific.
Before World War 1, planes were not used or designed for warfare. So when the war started, the planes were used for scouting, not combat. Because of the war people started carrying guns and bombs inside the planes, to shoot from the cockpit and throw bombs overboard. That was of course not very effective since it’s very inaccurate and the bombs were quite small. Later the onboard guns were exchanged for built-in guns. That presented some problems, for example, if you place the machine gun in front of the pilot, you could accidently hit the blades off your own aircraft, in which case you crash. Basically, they were not very effective at all, except for scouting. Kites and balloons were also used for scouting, which was cheaper. (pictures) There were also Zeppelins, which were essentially big airships that would slowly fly over cities for bombing raids. However, they could very easily be defeated with incendiary bullets.
Overall, aircraft were not very decisive in World War 1, especially in comparison to the weapons used on the ground.

An interesting ice breaker for your speech would be a reference to Snoopy always fighting the Red Baron in the skies over Europe...Teacher's *love* that sort of thing, and it will draw the class's attention.

no, murray, not at all. But I *read* the OP, which stated that he had all the info he needed on WWII....I missed his other post. I could make the same "angry" statement about you since you felt the need to attack me, douchebag.

Please don't troll, I'd like to keep this thread clean for about half an hour :)
Second part, this is the last part so far, but it feels a bit incomplete, any ideas? I'm kind of running out of time and inspiration here, so everything's welcome.

In World War 2, the planes were much more effective. Machine guns, bombs and the aircraft themselves became much better.
In Europe, the first important air battle was the Battle of Britain. In 1940, Germany wanted to use their airforce to destroy the British marine and military facilities. However, they had to defeat the British Royal Airforce first. It didn’t go very well. For weeks there were heavy air battles above South England. The German losses increased and their attacks became less frequent. This was the first time the German advance was halted.
After that, a lot of battles and bombing raids followed.
In december 1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour on Hawaii. About 2100 Americans died and 18 ships got hit. This was the reason for the United States to join the war.
In 1944 the Americans executed Operation Market Garden. It was the largest airborne operation up to that time. Around 35000 paratroopers in the Netherlands. The goal was to take several bridges, however, they failed to hold the Arnhem road bridge. It was a failure, however, the planes did their job well.

Krellin is right about the Snoopy thing, though, your teacher will love that.

Sorry murray....truly. A little verbal dog-fighting, if you will...

"Picture this, a small white dog white black spots sits atop his dog house, scanning the skies, ever vigilant against his foe. His scarf flaps in the wind, and his pilot's goggles are firmly in place. Snoopy, our hero, is always on guard against the Red Baron over the skies of France!

And thus Charles Schultz in his comic strip Peanuts often captured the drama and glory of air combat during WW I. But what was it really like back then?"

You may use this intro....lol

I'm not certain that I'd be talking so much about paratroopers if your subject is supposed to be combat planes. If it's just military aircraft in general, then go for it.
Also, if you're focusing on combat aircraft "firsts," the Battle of the Coral Sea is the first real aircraft carrier battle. It was a naval battle, but the two fleets never fired directly upon one and other--in fact they never even sighted each other. It was entirely fought by aircraft.

krellin, I'm really running out of time here so unless you can explain real quick I think I'll leave JET aircraft out... Like 5 minutes max, or maybe I can get up early tomorrow, I suppose I could...

Also, I added a small note to the end which makes it more complete I think:

Also, the 2 atomic bombs dropped on Japan are delivered by planes.
These are some of the most important achievements with planes in WWII.
krellin (80 DX)
27 Mar 13 UTC
By end of WWII, Germans were introducing jet aircraft with a very low survivability rate (less than 50%), including blowing up on take-off...so from WWI to WWII, we went from non-combat observation planes to the precursors to modern jet fighters....but best of all, we got Snoopy out of the deal...

The End. ( I gave you a close, too...lol)

Battle of Britain was the largest air battle in history, a majority of the naval battles in the Pacific used air support. So I guess the answer is yes

27 Mar 13 UTC
Fasces, if you're reffering to the OP, it says WWI, not WWII, if that's not what you mean I don't follow.

Also, I know absolutely nothing about Snoopy (well, the dog, but WWII?), feel free to tell me about it, or was it just a joke? Still have to make a powerpoint, so some more time to give advice I suppose... I should've started earlier lol...

As a pedantic point the Americans did not execute Operation Market Garden. It was the brainchild of Field Marshal Montgomery, who was British. The operation was carried out by a mixture of British, Polish and American airborne divisions in roughly equal numbers (obviously significantly fewer Poles). As such it was an Allied operation and probably the last that was British-led.

@Steephie22: My bad, I misread it, since most of the comments are about world war 2.

Regarding snoopy, he would always day dream as a fighter pilot in world war 1.

There weren't any major air battles in world war 1, to my knowledge, but there were still planes and zeppelins used in bombing raids, and intercepting bombing raids.

Reduce CDs, Increase Takeovers, Improve Site Considerably
Consensus looked like:
- When a player would CD (or on a first move), instead of a CD, the player is booted and the phase length resets.
- Changing the buy in to encourage take overs once vacated -- first 3 centers free.

HELP! Game refuses to unpause!
We've got a game going (C-3PO) that has been paused for a day or two now. We're given the options: draw, unpause, cancel, and for whatever reason when we click unpause nothing happens. Under one player it lists 'Votes: Draw, unpause, cancel'--this player also missed the last phase. Could anyone let us know how to get our game unpaused?
