louis armstrong did it
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
No, Louis had a backup group. He was part of a trio at a minimum. And people paid money to see him blow his horn and, in so doing, were themselves blowing a mental horn for him. No one here is blowing a mental horn for you.

IT's like being a comedian. Are they laughing with you or at you? Well, we are all laughing at you. If that is your goal. Congrats, you suceeded. If you think your comedy is genius and we are laughing with you, you fail miserably.

i find it hard to believe he never played solo
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
Do you even know anything about music? HE was trumpet player. Acapella trumpet? Very very rare and unheard of in Jazz. Trumpet usually has at least a bass or piano to provide a counterpoint and typically a small trap set if only a bass or piano and not both.
blankflag (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
so he never did it
he never played solo
my saying he did it is logically incorrect
youre wasting my time with this nonsense
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
Jazz horn players never play acapella. They may be a soloist, but that means they are the only lead line. They *always* have a small group behind them. The only trumpeteers I know who play truly acapella are classical players (Winton Marsallis did a beautiful classical album with several acapella horn pieces) and military bugle players.

do a youtube search for louis armstrong solo and enlighten yourself
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
How about you post a specific one you found. Because a solo in Jazz doesn't mean playing alone. It means being the lead. There is still accompaniment. I did go to UC's CCM for a time as a Jazz Trombonist. I had tons of solos. And all of them had an accompaniment at some point in the song.
blankflag (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
i dont know. its not like i am going to sit through music to prove a point.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
I did youtube search as you sugegsted. First 5 links below. Not a one of them has him playing or singing without accompaniment. I then did a searchf or Louis Armstrong acapella and every clip I found was someone else doing a Louis song (typically sung) and most not very well.

1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_upQjXwq7g
2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO3k-S_pqK4
3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMRwwWVuiRE
4. is someone else playing a Louis song
5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxjzkttwpuQ

i just dont know about that right now
blankflag (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
well there are those trumpet calls, nothing wrong with soloing one of those.
Maybe searches of youtube work differently from the UK, but my first hit on a Youtube search for "Louis Armstrong solo" gives this - Louis Armstrong, playing solo! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwln2Sfln4Y.

Oh, and I +1'd blankflag's "louis armstrong did it" too, it made me laugh.
Oh and to respond to the OP - yes, the site is slow - posting the above took 6.31 seconds instead of the usual 0.01.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
@Apeaker - I included that link. Read the notes. That isn't Louis.

"Me, Kieren Iannidinardi, playing Louis Armstrongs trumpet solos from La Vie En Rose. I have taught myself the solo's by ear so please forgive any slight discrepancies. If anybody is curious the last note of the solo that i play is a Super D. Thanks for listening and please remember to Like, Share & Subscribe!"
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
Well, I didn't "include" the link, but that was the song I referenced in number 4 above. It isn't Louis playing.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
And blankflag - Again, if you have an audience who paid to hear it (in CD or live) then you are physically soloing, but in their hearts and minds, your audience is accompanying you. Your posting tooting your own horn had no one paying or wanting to hear/read it, therefore it was you being full of hot air.

whatever. i give up on this site. i achieved so much success.... apart from in-game, of course. but is there any way to transfer your games to other people?
blankflag (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
actually all my games were takeovers so even if i abandon them at least my overall impact on the games may have been positive.
Oops. Sorry Draug. Didn't realise.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
No problem, Speaker. I seriously looked for anything with Louis playign without at least a drum or piano and couldn't find anything. I then looked for Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Maynard Ferguson and couldn't find asingle instance of the big four in Jazz Trumet playing acapella in any form. Even Wynton Marsellis' jazz performances all had someone backing him. Just a couple of classical trumpet pieces (Albason, made popular by the Sunday Morning show back in the 80s for instance) were true acapella pieces.

But again, if you have a listener appreciating what you are playing, then they are playing it in their head, their heart, and their soul along with you so you aren't really playing alone. Blankflag, on the other hand, has no one appreciating his self-serving "horn blowing" so is trulyl a blowhard full of hot air. :-)

Chet Baker *occasionally* went truly solo. Other times he'd play with just rhythm behind him. But yeah, his more well-known stuff was with Gerry Mulligan on sax.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 13 UTC
Please find some Chet Baker acapella for me. I don't doubt you. I just want to hear it and if you have a link handy... Otherwise I will youtube search for some myself.
hecks (164 D)
11 Mar 13 UTC
I don't have any handy. but I'll see what I can do. Usually he'd do it when he was singing. He'd sing something acapella, play a trumpet solo, go back go vocal... it was pretty cool.

What doea your name mean?
Some people have obvious references to historical or fictional characters, others are some form of their name (like mine, my name really is Phil) but for those with more cryptic names, I'm curious where they came from.

Some that I know from previous posts - draugnar is Tolkien elvish for some kind of wolf, Nigee is a name one of his friends used to call him, etc. But what about Bosox, mapu, sbyvyl, redhouse, abgemacht, etc. ?

The Most Conservative Contest
The question is: Who on the WebDip forums is the most Conservative? It shouldn't be too hard to figure out, as there are only a handful of Conservatives on this site (Krellin, Draug, ConservativeMan and myself come to mind). So in order to figure it out, we will post our positions on the issues here, and let the others decide.
