For the first time in about 130 years, the Netherlands will have a king at the end of April this year. An interesting discussion is currently going on about the title by which we will address his wife, the current princess Maxima.
Before they passed the new law on the royal house, a king, by default, ranked higher than a queen. It is for this reason that the husbands of our queens were called the prince-consort. But the king's wife is always called the queen.
So now there's a discussion among lawyers (a group of people to whom I do not belong) whether or not Maxima should not be princess, rather than queen.
Which brings me to the topic of name equality. Let's say I marry bluedoor1940. Wouldn't it be fair if my name becomes Red House-Door and hers Blue Door-House? And that our childrens' last names automatically become Door-House, where they keep the first part, their mother's name, when they marry? (PS unless of course, the parents choose something different, but wouldn't it be brilliant if this were the default?)
Discuss.
