Military Benefits

These are the things that bug me... these are the stories that say I have no reason to be a soldier and that I shouldn't enlist because I don't get any respect for it... these are the things that scare me away, not warfare.

Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy, I think, is one of the worst human traits, because it violates the rules of rhetoric and deceives both the hypocrite and their listener, obstructing reason and acceptance in the way of subversion and blind authority.

Mission To Mars...Fun To Dream About...Make It Happen, You Science-Type People Here!
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/tech/story/2012/09/12/manned-mars-mission-still-on-track/57767950/1 "If the time line holds, a manned test flight of the Space Launch System and Orion capsule will take place in 2021. If that's successful, an asteroid landing would be feasible by 2025, followed by a landing on Mars sometime in the 2030s." You cannot move into another player’s territories without clicking “declare war” on them.
Declaring war posts a global chat message that X is now at war with X.
Anyone who declares war on you you are automatically at war with, however to end the war BOTH players have to click on “ceasefire”.

There are no restrictions on neutral territories, even if they have units in them during the spring turn.
For example Russia could attack Rumania even if there is a Turkish unit inside during the spring, however when the Turkish player captures it in the Autumn, then an attack cannot be made without declaring war.

I can’t program however I just thought this is a good idea for a variant. It would mean that players could agree wars privately to deceive the other players, for example in Lepanto opening.
But - whats the price? If there is no price, a player could just start by saying:
"Nothing personal guys, but I'm declaring war on everybody, just to get it out of the way. Will be diploming as usual".

I like casi belli (reminds me of Europa Universalis, which is a good thing), but they have to involve some kind of price. Maybe only declare war with only ONE player at a time? But if you don't involve neutrals, this is still a pretty limited restriction.

I don't think players would do that, because then they could be attacked by everyone at once. For example, as Austria, declaring war on everybody is suicide, especially if those other players don't have any other wars ongoing - meaning they can ONLY attack neutral territories and Austria.

How about this, a proper alliance button which you both can click to form alliance, and if you declare war on one, the other can also attack you (but you are unaware of this before declaring war). So you declare war on Germany and it comes up "Austria has declared war on Germany and Italy", and only then do you realise that they are allied.

And perhaps only allow players to have 1 alliance at a time.
Yeah, good to tie in with alliances. You should also do that you have to break alliances before declaring war, giving people lag before they can attack that person.

Having said that, you still need some kind of carrot/stick. What do people gain from making a formal alliance? What do people lose when declaring war? You say they *can* be attacked by anyone. But truth is, that is already the case since they can just declare war at the drop of a hat.

You could only allow 1 declaration of war or alteration of alliances per year. That would make the whole system a lot more strategic.

"For example, as Austria, declaring war on everybody is suicide, especially if those other players don't have any other wars ongoing - meaning they can ONLY attack neutral territories and Austria. "

No, they can attack anyone, because they can declare war on anyone whenever they want.

To be clear, the cost is that if you declare war you lose negotiating position. Anyone you want as an ally you don't declare war on, as a sign of good-will.

The question is when you have to declare war, if at the start of the turn, or before? Can you wait until the last second before your moves go through?

I declaration of war or alliance makes for a completely different setup.

Can i defend my allies by moving a unit to protect their supply centers? or would this be seen as an attack and thus be prevented by the code??
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I agree with orathaic, the cost of declaring war is that you can no longer tell a person that you won't attack them. By not declaring war on someone, you gain trust because the other country knows you are not going to directly attack them. You may indirectly attack them through supporting someone else or not giving support you said you would, but knowing you can't directly attack them has value. Declaring war costs that value.

orathaic, as for the timing, I would think it would need to be setup for example for a 48 hour/phase game, the first 24 hours of a phase you can declare war, and the second 24 hours of the phase you cannot.

I wonder about the whole "player’s territories" and "no restrictions on neutral territories, even if they have units in them during the spring turn". Currently the webdip code gives neutral non-SC territories in the Spring. For example, Austria moves to Albania and Serbia in the Spring. Albania is shaded Austria's color while Serbia is not. Do non-SC territories start to follow the SC rules where they are only captured in the Autumn? I would be tempted to go the other route and instead disallow attacking a neutral territory that another player is in in the Spring but doesn't yet officially own without having declared war on that player.

What about forcing declarations of war in spring, and banning them from Fall, so you can 'attack' in spring turn, but not take SC.

but perhaps that should be with crystal ball variant where you have to enter moves one turn in advance...

Thoughts? Russia is on a gold buying binge. Thoughts? Are they acknowledging something about the global economy and the potential demise of the US dollar?

A question I've posed many times in the past to specific people but never here... what are some uncommon press alliances that work as well as any juggernaut/WT/etc.? My favorite's the Mediterranean triple but nobody else seems to like it o_O

Masters Interest
This is just a thread to judge if there is enough interest in the community to start another round of the Masters. Note that this tourney does take more than 40 players to start, and will take 6-8 months to complete. I'm gonna try to keep this to top 200 GR, due to complaints about the quality of the last round.

Brand new stupid question of the day
I've been looking back on some of my previous games and I see that there are several people who I've played with that have a big red x next to their names. Is it safe to assume that these players were banned for something? Or am I completely wrong on this?

Austria issue
I have searched the forum for similar topic, haven't found any. However if the issue was somewhere discussed just delete the thread.

Playing Austria is very difficult in most of the cases. Moreover, players usually tend to play a pattern of "lets kill Austria first." Although you may say it is a natural fate of nations that some are stronger other are weaker, personally I think that in the game Austria should have a more equal chances (...)

Borderline Movies
List films you're not sure if they land on the happy side of par...or just barely fail...or just hit the line...Mine's "Bladerunner"--I STILL can't tell if that's the best bad movie or worst good movie I've ever seen...it has some of the best stylistic and atmospheric elements of any even partially-action film I've seen...but even with the PDK book's ideas and the VK test...so DULL, and plodding, with a plot heavier on conceptualization than payoff, until the very, very end...I dunno.
