Why should fighting for the oppressor have been greeted with chocolates & roses? Do you expect, say, Lakota Indians to cheer on their kinsman who fight for Uncle Sam in the Middle East?

Yeah, some Irish helping the Allies was a good thing to do. Other Irish didn't think so because of other reasons.
