A Greeting
It seems that we all compete against each other yet know so little about each other outside of WebDiplomacy. In this thread, we'll all state something interesting about ourselves.

For me, I collect coins.

I must be honest it felt great but for some strange random reason I paid in Aussie dollars ...... how mad is that !!
I urge all regular losers (I mean Users of course) to see if you have any spare Aussie Dollars in their Paypal account and do likewise

Getting Exposed to Diplomacy
The only thing that we all have in common on this site is a love of Diplomacy. When did you first start playing? What's your first Diplomacy memory?

Getting exposed to "Diplomacy" - by H. Kissinger
Absolutely brilliant. Written by a true genius (not passing moral, only intellectual judgment). It teaches everything one needs to know about the mechanics of RL diplomacy.

Bobby Fischer on chess
"[Capablanca] wanted to change the rules already, back in the twenties, because he said chess was getting played out. He was right. Now chess is completely dead. It is all just memorization and prearrangement. It’s a terrible game now. Very uncreative." from a radio interview, 2006

Thoughts?

Brilliant ...... 30 minutes to go before the opening ceremony and the heavens have opened. It wouldn't be England without rain :-)

The opening ceremony was so good. Why did the closing ceremony have to suck so badly?

What are you talking about Octavious. Leeds finished just outside the playoff a couple seasons ago to go into the Premier League. This past season was a disappointment, but they've been on the up & up despite hard financial times. And, they can still kick Man U's ass, which is what is important.

Leeds needs fans like you (dreamers) but if you don't put in there is a danger they may go broke
Octavious (2802 D)
12 Aug 12 UTC
That isn't real hope. The playoffs are designed to make Leeds believe there is 'hope' and turn on itself, before acquiring enough debt to blow it out of the leagues for good..

No Rod Stewart, Elton John, Genesis, Coldplay, Tom Jones, etc, etc, etc ...... disappointing !!
We missed a trick there, it could have been brilliant
Apologies to the World for this poor finish, that wouldn't get you on the podium ..... pathetic !!

George Michael and then, even worse, Queen or that pretentious May guy :-( Noel Gallagher away with the fairies. Even Madness had something wrong with their sound, what a shame.
Best thing there was the Spice Girls.

Yes, you are probably right. But at last they were a little easier on the eye that the guy who was placed on the sex offenders register a few years ago, he really represents the best of GB, not.
As to rock songs about London, what happened to this -

Those guys, plus their erstwhile pianist Jules Holland, would have put on a great show.
And would you really put Waterloo Sunset over this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfK-WX2pa8c

Of course not.
Nope a very poor show I am afraid,

Fulhamish - I'd put Waterloo Sunset over most songs - Ray Davies is much under-ratd songwriter, and he showed Paul McCartney how you can perform at that age. [Much as I love The Clash, an apocalyptic song isn't the best choice]

Overall, not bad, better without the Spice Girls and One Direction (and Jessie J singing with Queen - wtf), but pretty good compared to the 70s retro bobbins from Rio.

It's been a great 16 days. The whole thing went pretty smoothly. Team GB did better than we hoped (3rd in the table, and 17 medals better than the minimum target). And, perhaps most importantly, we reclaimed our flag from the racist right - when one of the defining images is a Somali born British Muslim draped in the Union Flag, after winning 2 gold medals, it shows what we can be

International Power
It's no secret that Mitt Romney and the Republican party (for ages) has tried to establish its international power through hardnosed delegation, but is that even necessary?

Live world game
Would anyone on the site be interested in playing a live game of world diplomacy? Ive never been in a live version of the variant but I think it would be very exciting and much better than an average live game, I understand it could probably take a lot longer to play than usual live games to but just want to see if members of the site are up for playing one?
