Attention, my Christian friends
As many of you will be aware, I'm an atheist. Or a least, I *was* an atheist...
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
That is, until today. You see, God spoke to me today! I therefore offer a sincere apology to all the Christians I've clashed with on this forum. Turns out you were right and I was wrong. Having experienced the truth of God's existence, I am willing to accept my error. God actually spoke to me, directly, Himself! I feel so blessed.

Did he skype or googlechat with you?
Also, can you ask him why he puts us here again all faulty and with free will but he wants us to do exactly what he wants? He could have easily tweaked our genes so that we wouldn't be so screwy, but I guess it's more of a challenge for us if we were programmed incorrectly to begin with.
Well, tell him we said thanks.

Which god?

Ah gotta get with the times. I still remember when Joseph was trying to use Ask Jeeves.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
So.....

What did he say?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
He did not skype or googlechat with me. God has no need of such things. He appeared in a vision and spoke to me directly.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
WHAT DID HE SAY.

Quit being such a tease.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
Ah, Tolstoy - now you're getting to the important part. What did he say to me? I'll tell you:

When God spoke to me today, He appointed me supreme ruler of all creatures on earth. How cool is that?
Tolstoy (1962 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
Cool. So what are you going to do with your newfound authority?
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=882855#882855

Sounds cool, have fun collecting. Be sure to check Christian in the above thread :-)
You forgot to take your seizure medication, didn't you? Seizures cause all the best hallucinations of deities.
largeham (149 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
Tell Him to bring back dinosaurs. Pokemon would also be nice.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ Tolstoy: God didn't have time to tell me whether His Catholic or Protestant followers are the ones doing it right. However I am assuming that one of them must be His chosen, and that therefore either the Pope, or the Archbishop of Canterbury, will also have been directly advised, by Him, of His decision to appoint me supreme ruler of all creatures on earth. So I'm waiting for them to get in touch, and we can discuss my plan after that. I do however plan to be a 'light touch' supreme ruler. You may all continue to go about your business until I advise you otherwise.

@ Crazy Anglican: Collecting what?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ largeham: Unfortunately God only appointed me supreme ruler of all creatures on earth. I therefore have no power over either dinosaurs (because they are extinct) or Pokemon characters (since they aren't real creatures, they only exist in fiction).

However, the next time He speaks to me, I will do my best to mention these issues to Him, since they concern you so greatly.
nvm, I see that this thread was more of an internal thing, lol.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
You're not making much sense, Crazy Anglican. What do you mean by "an internal thing" ?
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

I want my dog to be able to tell knock knock jokes. You think you can take care of that for me?
You're going to need a more intricate story if this belief system is really going to take off. Think L. Ron Hubbard. Are you enough of a sociopath to REALLY pull this off?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
Sorry, Tom - not sure I can help you there. As I said, God has appointed me supreme ruler of all creatures on earth. That means I can tell them what to do - it doesn't allow me to alter their DNA. I can't make your dog talk at all, let alone tell jokes. However, from now on, due to God's decision, your dog is taking orders from me. You might want to bear that in mind.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ thatwasawkward:

I'm not attempting to establish a new belief system. The concept of God as put forward by mainstream Christianity is already well established.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
09 Jun 12 UTC
Damn. That's too bad. Can you at least keep him from shitting in the house? Thanks.
largeham (149 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
This might be more relevant. A while ago a group of cats left me and my family a dead bird, obviously as an offering. However, my mom forced me to bury the bird, insulting the cats that their sacrifice had been ignored. Now I think they are stalking me, I'm not sure I have much longer to live. Is it possible, oh great Jamiet that you could ask them to leave me alone and attack my sister?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ Tom: Indeed. I shall command your dog to defecate only on your neighbour's lawn - would that be acceptable?
Sorry dude, an old religion plus a new prophet is the same as starting a new religion. Judaism + Jesus = Christianity. Christianity + Muhammad = Islam. Christianity + Jamiet99uk =?
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
09 Jun 12 UTC
Yes. That would be more than acceptable. I will sacrifice my neighbors cat in your honor tonight.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ largeham: Please - it is God who is great, not me. I have been appointed supreme ruler of all creatures on earth, but I shall only be acting on His behalf, not taking His place in any way.

I would certainly be happy to intercede in your dispute with the cats your mother caused you to insult. However, why do you wish them to attack your sister? Why is she deserving of such punishment? Would it not be better if I commanded the cats to leave the both of you alone?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ thatwasawkward: I do not agree with your analysis. Christianity + John the Baptist = which new religion?

@ Tom: Please do not harm your neighbour's cat. No sacrifices are necessary. Thanks.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

@ Tom: Oh dear... you do appear to be a rash and impulsive individual, although your eagerness to honour me, while misplaced, is somehow pleasing. Please do not harm any more animals if you can help it.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
@ thatwasawkward: Without getting into too much of a theologial debate, it is my understanding that many Christians regard John as a prophet without describing themselces as Mandaeists.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
* themselves
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
(Also if you want to be pedantic, Christianity + John the Baptist does NOT = Mandaeism, since history would seem to suggest that the Mandeans are not simply an offshoot of Christianity but a sect which arose around the same time as Christianity)
largeham (149 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
My sister has unfortunately joined the new false prophet church if One-Directionism, it is one direction down to hell. She refuses to see the light of the Lord, so I would like your intercession with the cats to encourage them to attack her, hopefully causing her to recognise the error of her ways.
Kochevnik (1160 D)

Serious question: why do both sides of the worldview debate spend so much time mocking each other on this website? Can't we just be civil and agree to disagree?

I mean, I know there are those who are interested in seriously hearing how the other side thinks, either to inform their own worldview or just understand those on the other side, but the number of people like that is DWARFED massively by the number of people who just want to be dicks to those who don't agree with them. This thread is just one of many, many examples.
yebellz (729 D(G))

"I cannot understand why we idle discussing religion. If we are honest—and scientists have to be—we must admit that religion is a jumble of false assertions, with no basis in reality. The very idea of God is a product of the human imagination. It is quite understandable why primitive people, who were so much more exposed to the overpowering forces of nature than we are today, should have personified these forces in fear and trembling. But nowadays, when we understand so many natural processes, we have no need for such solutions. I can't for the life of me see how the postulate of an Almighty God helps us in any way. What I do see is that this assumption leads to such unproductive questions as why God allows so much misery and injustice, the exploitation of the poor by the rich and all the other horrors He might have prevented. If religion is still being taught, it is by no means because its ideas still convince us, but simply because some of us want to keep the lower classes quiet. Quiet people are much easier to govern than clamorous and dissatisfied ones. They are also much easier to exploit. Religion is a kind of opium that allows a nation to lull itself into wishful dreams and so forget the injustices that are being perpetrated against the people. Hence the close alliance between those two great political forces, the State and the Church. Both need the illusion that a kindly God rewards—in heaven if not on earth—all those who have not risen up against injustice, who have done their duty quietly and uncomplainingly. That is precisely why the honest assertion that God is a mere product of the human imagination is branded as the worst of all mortal sins."

-Paul Dirac
Zmaj (215 D(B))
09 Jun 12 UTC
Reading that quote from Dirac, I have realized that arguments against God can become as obsolete as God himself. We are all children of our time.
Kochevnik (1160 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
See, that is a prime example. I've never heard of Paul Dirac, but I can say on the basis of that quote that he's a massive dick.

It's the old "Person A does not share my opinion about Controversial Issue B. I am obviously right, and there is no possibility I am wrong, so I will ignore/yell at/mock person A."

Most of us are taught to grow out of this by the time we are 14 or so, but for some reason that approach to life is still common on the internet, and on this forum in particular. Since Diplomacy is a game that values seeing things from other people's point of view, I can't understand why this is so.
yebellz (729 D(G))
09 Jun 12 UTC
Paul Dirac was an English physicist, a Nobel Laureate, and contributor to the development of Quantum Mechanics.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Dirac

The quote was taken from the article and in the context of a religious discussion amongst him and his fellow scientists at a scientific conference.
Kochevnik (1160 D)
09 Jun 12 UTC
Oh, I'm not disputing that he's a very smart guy. There are plenty of smart people in the world who are dicks. On both sides of this, or almost any controversial issue, by the way.
Yeah, Kochevnik,

As one who recently came beck to the forum, That has been the thing that is most markedly different. I was always able to argue as a source of entertainment. Fencing with atheists my wife called it. I knew I wasn't going to convert them. I wasn't trying. You define your beliefs when you try them in the face of opposition. Even the better debaters, don't seem to be putting in much of an effort to avoid emotion and look at things logically right now. Kind of a shame really, I rather liked debating on that level. The debate thread holds some hope of that kind of discusson though. The let's see what we have in common thread, was kind of dismal failure though. lol.

I think I should take this moment that there is a standing truism about me which can be applied at any time:

At any moment, you may ask me to explain/defend my belief in skeptical pyrrhonism, and I will cheerfully oblige you, in a respectful and thorough manner.

Only exception is during life-threatening emergencies.

Love,
Me
