Howdy. I am going to start reading Satanic Verses, and wanted to see if anyone wanted to do a book club type deal. We could read along and discuss what we think about it in the forum.

Favourite Wines
Can we make a list of all the favourite wines people have on this website? Let's try.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

Ooooooh, can we make this a "daily" list of favorite wines?
Pleeeeeeeasssse, say yes. Otherwise, I would whine until you agree. This, by the way, is also how I diplome.

Does "red" wine count as a favorite?
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

Barolo
Chianti

I think this could really work as a daily list. There's a lot of scope for that.

But I would prefer winemaker's etc, not simply 'red', 'white', 'rose', etc. The list would be rather short that way - although it would be nice to see if everyone does like red, white, and rose wine.

Not exactly wines, but I *love* Sherry, especially Cream and Amontillado.

Reds:
Merlot
Nero D'Avola (excellent with steak)
Shiraz-Cabernet
Cabernet Sauvignon

Whites:
Riesling

Oh, for particular labels:

Villa Pozzi Nero D'Avola
Yellow Tail Shiraz-Cabernet
Relax Riesling

Riesling is great! And Spätlese

"Riesling is great!"

Yeah it is. It just sweet enough that my female friends can pretend it is Moscato, but not so sweet that my friends who like wine dislike it.

Domino Merlot.

Cheap, delicious... and most importantly.... unpretentious (thanks Eden)
I've yet to try a Malbec I haven't liked.
EightfoldWay (2115 D)
06 May 12 UTC
As far as Riesling goes, I absolutely swear by Joh. Jos. Prüm, and failing that Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. I've been pretty happy with Stellina di Notte as far as Pinot Grigios are concerned, but haven't nearly explored as much as I should have with those...
EightfoldWay (2115 D)
06 May 12 UTC
Er, rather, that should read "failing that, Franz Reinhart". Haven't had Domaine Zind yet; I have a bottle of their '08 Clos Hauserer that I'm saving for a special day.

If you like an Austrian I've had a Fritzl in my cellar for the last 24 years, I'm not sure how it will react if I take it out
Putin33 (111 D)
06 May 12 UTC
Firelands Gewurztraminer (Ohio).

Oh and Winking Owl Chardonnay (seriously it's $4 at Aldi's).
Merlot - the only red I like.
Jacobs Creek - a fine tasting cheap white wine.
Is this Austrian guy Fritzl like the Gimp from Pulp Fiction?
I'll agree with you on the Malbecs.

Also Merlot

nothing pretentious here, if it tastes good I'll drink it.

My favourite wine of the moment will be the one I'm drinking, but..

Red - Rioja.

White - Chablis

Rose - inexpensive, and chilled in the summer

Rose, definitely. My favorite are Chateauneuf-du-Papes - very warm, earthy, rich, and spicey.

Some people talk about Malbecs, it´s probably my favorite wine. Try a Norton one or Malma or even Finca La Papay, you can´t go wrong with one of these and they are not too expensive. If you like strong and tanic wines, try a Tannat from Uruguay.

Good wines I have been drinking lately
Cassilero del Diablo Carmenere - Chile
Malma Malbec - Argenina
Casa Silva Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon - Chile
Angheben Barbera - Brasil (we have some good red wines here and excelent sprkling wines).
Avondale Chenin Blanc - South Africa
Santa Helena Sauvignon Blanc - Chile.

What's with the love of Malbecs? I guess people like bland wine.
BosephJennett (866 D)

Sauvignon Blanc from Australia and New Zealand
Pinots from Oregon
Rioja (Gran) Reserva or any big Cabernets

Definitely a red man; McGuigan brand from Australia I find is generally very good.
erik8asandwich (298 D)

@ putin I have always found malbecs to have a almost peppery flavor. Not bland in my opinion. However, also not my favorite.

@ Boseph Pinots from Oregon and Washington are great!

My favorite red is Pinot Noir.

My favorite label is Dry Creek (out of California). They are really excellent.

Villa Puccini Toscana ( or most any sangiovese blend)
Shingleback Shiraz (though I enjoy most SE Aussie Shiraz)
Red Bicyclette Syrah (the only Syrah I actually like)
most any Malbec
Most Bandols from the Provence region of France (and I'm typically far more partial to Italian reds than French) - but I had a great one when in Marseilles

I'm not as keen on whites - but I typically enjoy German reislings if I do partake.

Putin33 (111 D)
07 May 12 UTC
You hate most Syrahs but love most Shiraz?

Color me confused.
Putin33 (111 D)

Frankly there are few red wines I can drink, because drinking lukewarm beverages is not my idea of refreshing.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 May 12 UTC
I wouldn't say I drink wine to be "refreshed".

Do you not like tea, coffee, sake, or hot chocolate, either?
gregoire (100 D)
07 May 12 UTC
Yes, I think red wine is more for relaxation or conviviality than refreshment.
LanGaidin (1509 D)
07 May 12 UTC
@ Putin... they may be from the same grape, but they don't taste the same. I suppose the more confusing thing is that out of all the Syrah's I've tried, this little $10 bottle is the only one I've found to my liking.
LanGaidin (1509 D)
07 May 12 UTC
@rd... where in Brazil are you again?
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
08 May 12 UTC
@LamGaidin - I am in Rio Grande do Sul. Here we have a lot of good wineyards. We have a terroir and climate that remember a lot Toscana (well, when it doesn´t rain too much and without the monuments :-)). This year we have a great year for grapes and the wines will be really great. Also, the 2005 wines from Rio Grande do Sul are excellent too. But the good ones aren´t on the international market, just the cheap and not so good ones, then we don´t have a great reputation on the wine market. As we are near the border with Argentina and Uruguay, we have a lot of wines from this countries and also from Chile.
Now that the exchange rate for Real is a bit over appreciate decent european wines and american too are avaliable down here. Unfortunetly Austrialian and New Zealand ones aren´t that common.
I don't think anyone's mentioned Montepulciano D'Abruzzo. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it's a nice inexpensive red and a change-up from the cab/merlot/pinot rut.

Franzia's White Zinfandel.

Clearly, the expensive stuff is for me lol. Granted, I don't really care for any wine I've had.
Putin33 (111 D)
08 May 12 UTC
"Do you not like tea, coffee, sake, or hot chocolate, either?"

I did not mean to imply that all drinks need be 'refreshing', only that lukewarm drinks in particular are not desirable (although sake can be and I prefer to have cold, anyway).

This Time On Philosophy, Erm, Whenever--The Club of Ideas and Intellect: What's In/Out?
On the heels of that "Daily Bible Reading" thread and the impersonations (Mujus, I invite you and your followers along into this thread) and many have ridiculed the arguments made therein as illogical--myself included. It seems, more than ever, that there's a divide, in these amateur ranks and in the "professional" ranks, as to what is viewed as properly intellectual. So! What views and theories are intellectually "valid," in your view, and which are bunkum?

We only have fortknox, myself, and two others at this point and we can't be trying to reserve a venue at the last minute in Cincinnati. They get booked up in advance...

So what's that URL, fortknox?

[MAY] Face-to-Face Diplomacy in NYC!
After taking a brief self-imposed vacation from all things non-academic in April, I'm now getting back to organizing games this May. The schedule is tight but we can squeeze some stuff in here. For the sake of keeping things easy I'm just going to copy and paste the message I sent out to my email list here (PM me with your email address if you'd like to be put on the list, or if you didn't get the email for some reason):

Abortion
With the new discussions in parliament regarding freeing up restrictions on abortion to allow any length of term to be aborted, what do people here think about this? Obviously abortion in itself has been discussed before, so let's keep this specific to the new discussion on no-limit abortion rights.
