As I understand the formula, basically it's strong encouragement to only play with high-rated players, especially in gunboat where early draws are common due to CD, but a 5-way draw with lower-rated players tends to hurt you?

I feel like there should be a better solution.

@CS If the game draws before the end of 1903, it doesn't count for GR.

@ghug, I think you haven't played live gunboat recently - 1903 is incredibly optimistic for when such a draw would actually occur.

Although regardless, the formula seems flawed in that the game imposes natural limits on the largest plausible win/draw fractions. Some fraction of the time, both of your neighbors choose to eliminate you from the outset in gunboat. Playing a large number of gunboat games against lower-rated players essentially caps your rating at ~twice the rating of your opponents under this formula, unless you believe winning more than ~25-30% of the time is sustainable.

Gunboats are only worth 1/4 as much for exactly that reason.

I think the no-GR window should be extended to 1905, honestly.

@PE, agreed. Even a 1905 ending seems a little ridiculous but going beyond there at least merits some debate. Anything before 1905 is ridiculous.

Yes, but some of us play pretty much only gunboat, so making them worth 1/4 as much doesn't change the math, it just makes us converge more slowly.

Anyway, I go up for the third straight month! A 3-way draw that I probably should have been able to win brings me up to 635! Over a year ago my rating was 151.xxxx, but it was definitely because I played some noobs (as I was also a noob) and got lucky. I'm edging towards that number, and it's nice! I've been hovering around 900-1100 for the past year, and it seems that I'm starting to play consistently better than I used to :D However, I'm about to get eliminated from a game, so I better start a new one and do well in that to balance it out and keep moving up :)
