Gunboat Cheater Message
I am playing a WorldDip gunboat game, and a guy was kicked off. The admin sent a notification, of course. However, the message cannot be read because there is no in game messaging, and displays as a permanent alert across the top of my page. What to do?

Today is is perfect... well a 2 second differential on the turn count-down timer. Other days its 30-40 seconds off. Same computer... same internet connection... what gives.

Game cancelling question
how are points distributed afer player replacements?
rokakoma (19138 D)
26 Apr 12 UTC
hi folks,

can anybody tell me, what happens when a game has a 8th (9th etc) player, who has joined later with a different bet, replacing someone who has CD-ed, or was banned.

My question is, at cancel I assume original bets are given back, while at draw the pot is distributed equally.
The problem is, if we replaced a banned player, and the pot size became bigger, than it originally wass, will the banned player get back his points, or what happens with his bet?
TheJok3r (765 D)
26 Apr 12 UTC
The player who was replaced whether by a ban or CD loses his bet.

If you draw, the pot will still split evenly.

If you cancel, everybody will get what they bet back. Except for the banned player obviously. I assume those points would disappear into oblivion.

I remember playing a game where a one center Germany was bought for like 7-10 D and had he been included in the draw it would have netted him 100 D.
rokakoma (19138 D)
26 Apr 12 UTC
Drawing is pretty obvious I think, the real question is cancelling. I would assume the very same, that the banned/CDed player gets back nothing, and points vaporize, but it would be great to know it for 100%
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
I believe the banned player gets nothing and the house keeps the points (helps to reduce point inflation), but in the case of CDs, if the CD hasn't been replaced, I know he gets his points back (one reason I'd rather draw than cancel on an early CD is to punish the asshole). If he has been replaced I don't think the system knows who he is anymore and therfore he gets nothing and the house gets the points just like with a banned player. Of course, points have no real value and the house just divies them out from a pool of infinite proportions, so it doesn't really matter. There is no "bank" of points.
yebellz (729 D(G))

Cancelling a game essentially makes it as if the game never happened. All players get whatever points they put into the game back.

Ironically, I think that even banned accounts get refunded after games are cancelled or when games they were in have finished.
Banning a player does not prevent a player from receiving points, it only sets their point total at the time of their ban to zero. That's why you sometimes might notice thqt some banned players have some points to their name. Generally, it is not much since they were cleared down to zero, but it is possible that they might have a significant amount.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
@Yebellz - How does the system refund the points when it doesn't know the accounts of the replaced player? Seriously, this is in contradiciton to everything I know about the site's database. It can't return points to players who were replaced because it doesn't know who they are.
yebellz (729 D(G))
26 Apr 12 UTC
Either way, the points held by a banned account don't matter much and do not affect inflation since they cannot be used and are effectively removed from the system.

The only way they can come back into play is in the unlikely event that the account here unbanned. In those cases, there is often already a greater net loss due to an account's free points being wiped out by a ban, and either way we can set their points to an appropriate level.

26 Apr 12 UTC
@draug, right, sorry, I'm not sure if replaced players get their points back in the case of a cancel, but all others, even banned ones, do get refunds. I think the database may (but I'm not certain) keep tracked of the replaced players. Has anyone taken a look at that aspect of the code recently. Vaft may know since he's worked with the data recently to make his stats.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
The question is more what happens to the CD players points on a cancel if they were replaced by someone else. I don't think the system can give back the points to a replaced CD player. To one still in CD, sure. But not to a replaced one, can it?

Sorry, cross post there yebellz

Found this comment in the code:

//TODO: Technically this should look up CD players which were taken over and repay
// their bet too, but such a scenario will be very rare

Seems that replaced players do not get their bet back if the game is later cancelled, but that it may be technically feasible to implement.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
LOL! I love the way the comment passes judgment and makes an assumption that cancelled games will rarely have a CD taken over. I find it's quite the opposite. Many times the first CD will be taken over, but the second or third is what prompts the rest to cancel the game. A little shortsighted there of whichever developer did that part.

Draugnar, yebellz, just for your information, CDed players (and basically original players) CAN be looked up. So, technically it is possible to return their points.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
@roka - I'm guessing you know the structure of the DB... Cause nothing I've ever seen on the site allows you to see the original player who got replaced.
rokakoma (19138 D)
26 Apr 12 UTC
Draug: yes, not on the site, but it's stored in the DB. Although there has been an error (not sure it has been corrected yet) and above gameID=65535 (2 bytes integer) it's not stored anymore.

So even if points ought to be returned, I'm afraid they aren't in the recent month. All in all, the letter bug is already known and will be correcter, the returning of points to CDed/banned players is still a question.

I don't have the code, nor the DB, I was helping Vaftrudner in PHP/SQL to make his statistics and I got familiar with a few things during that time.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
26 Apr 12 UTC
Canceled games are wiped from the database. Anything that happens before the wipe, returning points, sending messages etc. are not in the database I have, but in the code for the site. The code is however freely available to view on SourceForge. I looked it over and found the same thing yebellz pointed out, but most of the point is over my head.

@roka - cool. Yeah, I never actually saw the whole DB structure. When I helped Vaft with some of the complex nested selects and joins, I only had limited access to particular tables' structures.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
26 Apr 12 UTC
I haven't received permission to share the database dump, so I've only asked about tables, I don't feel comfortable sharing any of the data unless it's processed and anonymous. I also only make player-specific stats on request. Not that I have any sensitive data, it's been removed. But I can still see what games have had CDs in them, yes. That's all stored. And I believe that even canceled games might be stored in a way in the message log, but that's part of the admins' tables that have been removed from my dump.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
I know, Vaft. It was a statement, not a condemnation. I actually respect you for *not* freely giving out the data to others.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 12 UTC
And I could get the structure out of the source code. I just haven't bothered to pull it down as I'm not a PHP guy and really don't have any interest in PHP. I might pull it down to write some .Net features at some point if Kestas opens up a connection kind of like I did for you with my webspace.
I'm with Draugnar on how I like to handle CDs. Usually I call for a Cancel vote, but if the remaining six have to draw in order to make the CDer surrender his bet, then that's how I'll roll with it from now on.

Draw has the added bonus of explicitly being a political tool, which means that holdouts can be persuaded to draw by force.

Playing in Anonymous Games
Are there signals people use when playing in anonymous games? I play totally independently because I know no-one, but looking at how others play there does seem to be some interesting collaboration. For example if you hold an opposition unit is that a signal for something?

Boys in Pseudo-Postal
There are four cancel votes. I think this is a good idea, and I think we should all try to play again, but it is clear that everyone is too busy right now to communicate proper. I would be willing to pause for an indefinite amount of time if that's the preference, but the consensus right now is a cancel. (Sorry this isn't through the mail system, I think we need a quick decision since the deadline is fast approaching.) Please post your thoughts, objections, concerns here.
